atopic dermatitis

took rocky to the vet today, he has atopic dermatitis, he has been given an injection and some abs for the next 30 days, my Vet who I love would like me to put Rocky on a allergy medicine called atipica it is quite expensive to start - 200.00 for the first month and then the dose is decreased by half 100.00 and then depending how well rocky does he may only have a dose every other day or every 3 days??? has anybody else used this or heard of it. He is in really bad shape guys, his skin is splitting open with pus and just stinky, any advice would be greatly appreciated, at my end I dont know what to do for him anymore, I just want him healthy.

worked for Hercules

It took a while to get his allergies cleared up, but cyclosporine definitely helped. Now he gets bath w/ medicated shampoo & allergy shot weekly and is doing fine. It took us several months and we tried a lot of different things!

Re: food allergy test

we have tried him on several different foods formulated for allergies, and fed him only this, with no luck, this has been going on for over 1 year, on defferent meds, still no luck, oh the rash goes away but as soon as the meds are over, its back with a vengence, so this it it.

will do

just to let you know Rocky has been on most types of abs and pred most of this year, I also have had him on homeopathic remedies with no permanent solutions, It is to the point where he sleeps 24/7 only gets out of his crate to eat of potty, that is no life . we hgave ruled out food allergies, so I believe that after this round of meds are done I will be putting him on atopia, we know it is cronic , no cure, but if it can relieve the symptoms and give him some kind of peace and comfort, then I am all for it. I would not keep him on prednisone for any lenght of time it can play havic with his organs, I hope that you can find relife for your baby also. please feel free to email me privately .

Re: atopic dermatitis

Are you seeing an animal dermatologist? I have never used nor heard of the medication that he wants to prescribe, but having had an allergic dog and gone through all the testing there are all kinds of meds out there. We did the allergy shots and antibiotics. The dog looked beautiful most of the time but it was hard work keeping him that way. The key is finding which meds work for your dog.
If it is environmental it is harder to treat. My dogs was not food related and we had to try several different combinations of meds to find what worked, once we did it made all the difference in the world. I even tried stopping the allergy shots to see if they were really working and found that they were, so it was expensive but worth it to have him comfortable.
If you have not consulted with an animal dermatologist I would highly recommend it. It sounds like you are going in the right direction and the main thing is you want your baby to be comfortable.
I wish you the best and hope your baby gets to feeling better soon.

my question first off......

it would seem to me that if the Atopica was the end all for allergies, then Human use would be first with the amount of people who suffer from allergies. Maybe there is and i am not aware of a product similiar to Atopica. Is anyone aware of a human version? I am always a little skeptical of claims to produce the ultimate results. Just curious......... Atopic Dermatitis

As a Pharmaceutical rep in Dermatlogy, there is no cure for AD just to manage the symptoms and figure out what triggers a flare. Skin can get really itchy, and skin can become heavily excoriated. Its the rash that keeps on itching. In humans, they treat with topical steroids (different strenghths depening on body area) and to moisturize. Don't know if this helps, but AD in Dogs and Humans is no different. INMO. Good luck

I'm one who advocated "quality" over "quantity"

and while I'm not advocating anything dangerous, I do think that if the oral cyclosporine will help him enjoy each day more, its worth what risks he can tolerate. happy.gif

please, please, please.....

i haven't been on lately, but lurking every day. if you're going to use atopica, please google it & read all reviews & side effects before using it. my percy was on it & it was great for his allergy related skin issues. i don't have any proof of this, but it seemed like after he started taking the atopica, his health started going downhill. he ended up having heart failure & he was only 3 1/2 years old (no signs of any heart issues previously). one of the side effects is anorexia, he lost a lot of weight & didn't care about his food. (very strange for him) there is so much more, but i don't want to scare you-only make you aware of the side effects. i wish i had done more research before i let my poor percy take this stuff! i know all dogs will react differently, but again, just want you to be informed happy.gif good luck!

Atopica

This is the drug you are thinking of. The generic form is oral cyclosporine. Try to get the generic if you can. It comes in a capsule and is given once daily.

Even the generic is very expensive. Vets recommend Atopica/cyclosporine in extreme allergy cases. It works for some dogs but not others.

We are currently using it for a rescue bulldog whose allergies were so bad that he was depressed and barely able to move. It has made a huge difference in his comfort and quality of life--he is a happy boy now.

What about Prednisone?

Many years ago we had a little Westie with horrendous skin problems. The vet said let's try some prednisone & it was like a miracle occured! The dog stopped scratching almost with the first dose & his skin healed & his coat became beautiful again. I'm still amazed when I think back about that. But I am no expert & have never heard of 'atopic dermatitis'. Best Wishes.

food allergy test

what results did you have with the food allergy test? I thought that would be the way to go, but now i am curious if the cronic skin issue deems the life time meds? Can you let me know what the food allgery tests revealed and why it didn't work? thanks T & J

Re: just curious...

his belly is red, very itchy, it had also spread down his hind legs, it also involves his feet , his leg split open recently and started to ooze, he stinks, so I am guessing that it can only get worse, hope he gets relief soon

Re: I have heard of this

I think that my decision had been made already, it is cronic, so we can only alleviate the symptoms they will never be cured, we have done the food allergy thing, we put him on abs and it goes away, as soon as he is off of them it comes back, I would think the price difference is because I am in Canada, so as soon as this round of abs is over he will go on this, lets keep our fingers crossed.
