Bella is 4 and for the first 4 years was a woosy watchdog..lol. she barked at nothing, including my girlfriend banging on the window..she said nothing.
but seems this past 2 weeks she is really coming into herself. kinda woke up and smelled the coffee.
when i left home in a dangerous situation..the Cops told me that the english bulldog was the best protector for a family. they would do anything to protect their family and owners. up until the past 4 years I didn't believe a cop for a minute..and NOW not sure soo anymore. I feel it is more of a maturity, confidence thing. Bella is far more confident now then she was before and more mature too.
My son tried to sneak around the backyard and sneak up on Bella..you should have heard her bark..I would even run ..lol..she was pretty loud.
Gus is dear ..he is excused...for protection..lol.. he does bark if he sees something out of wack outside or inside though
what age did you bulldog become a protector? are they are protector?
She was my first Clovis
I've only had one Boo. Well, actually, my first Clovis was a cat. My current Clovis is therefore my third Clovis, tho my second bulldog named Clovis.

thanks for posting the video..very interesting to see the testin
thanks for sharing
very very interesting to watch
She would sprint like an Olympian in that even, lol
my first bulldog was really amusing about food deliveries. Back then I used to have pizzas delivered (now I only buy pizza by the slice, and they don't do deliveries for that, lol). With my first bulldog, tho, she would listen intently as I ordered a pizza over the phone. She clearly understood what the word "pizza" meant. As soon as I would hang up, she would run to the front door and she would sit by the door until the delivery person arrived, even if it took an hour. She was some determined to get her pizza. And then she would eat it just like a person. She didn't want me to break off pieces and put them in her bowl, or even on the floor. Instead, I would hold a slice right in front of her face and she would bite out a chunk just like a person would do. I wish I had a mini video camera back then.

Awww! Was that Boo One?
NM
LOL @ Boo!
Something tells me if it was a Chicken Delivery guy, she wouldn't dare sleep through the doorbell : )
TT
here's a video of a TT test done last fall, I feel its more dramatic in personhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj1Tyc1SG9k&feature=channel This dog is almost completely unreactive to each test which I figured she would be. after the umbrella test they walk on fencing which she didn't love. This is her son @ 2yrs and he was one of the 40 + dogs who after the gun shot lunged towards the noise which impressed the testers and I was told to take him around the truck so he could see the noise.... maybe boring to watch but I was curious to see the difference in reactions. They are allowed to startle but must recover this dog jumped towards the noise. I find it interesting with the man approaching how when he turns and walks away the dogs behaviour completely changes.... to me is the perfect guard dog.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62duu7L67Ac&feature=channel . I tested one 12 month old dog who did not pass and would wait till two, when they are more self confident for the test.
My one little pug is a great protector..she hears every little n
the rest of the pugs will bark too..
they are much more noiser then the bulldogs all the time
I will admit that when Gus barks out the window..I usually check. with being deaf ..and he eyesight..it is usually something that I should check.
not sure that Gus would be very protective over me but I think that Bella would definetly bark enough to scare someone off..
I think Gus would let anyone in the house here..not Bella but Gu
normally Gus is fine with anyone that spends time with him.
the only time he was protective was the night he would not let me in the house..with all the lights off..he could not see me and of course not hear me.. but that is about it.
he will bark if he sees strange lights on cars or if he sees something in the yard but generally he is lover..lol. not a fighter and for sure not much of a protector..
through the back window...
wow he meant business.
he must have thought the other dog was a threat for some reason..
Bella is not fond of other dogs but only other types of bulldogs for some reason. I have met a couple of other english bulldogs and she was not good with either of them. met an american bulldog and she was not good with him either.. but any other breed and she is ok it seems..makes no sense to me to be honest.
Not Maybull
Maybull loves everyone. If she happens to wake up and there's a person she doesn't know at the door or in the house, she'll wiggle and want to get petted.
Woof!
100%
Winston is very aggresive to anyone who is not invited to the house or near his truck when he is in it. Unless it is a child he would never ever every hurt a child he tolerates so much with them.
He is not a fan of other dogs, Big ones in particular. He will fight. He does have his doggie friends who he loves though.
Had my buddy's shepard jump up on me, winston went through the back window of the truck and jumped over the bed and bit the dog. I felt so bad because he would not let ago to start. I never saw him do something like that.
Not so much my bulldogs as my Lhasa
like my previous Lhasa, my current Scout has just incredible hearing. If someone walks up the street at 3 am, Scout will hear him. My bulldogs are not particularly good guarddogs. I can ring the doorbell while Boo is sleeping on the sofa and she will continue sleeping.

wow 4 months old..
I think if push comes to shove..
they would react
Bella is very protective over the pugs here..big time..
so she might be if some intruder just kinda showed up
the police seem to think that there is nothing like a english bulldog and it family..maybe they are right..after all...Bella is finally getting it. she is for sure alot more mature and alot more confident since obedience training...you can see the difference every day with her
thanks for your response
interesting...just really protective over his family..
that is neat
i think that is all that Bella is doing now too..is just being protective.
like I said only the past few weeks really noticed it..big time
your dogs are GEORGOUS PICS...the info on ATTS is.....
very interesting to read
wow did not even know a test like this existed..
cool
not sure how my dogs would do not a test like that..not that well I am sure..
but neat to read
your bulldogs are beautiful
thanks for the info and your response
ATTS stands for
American Temperament Test Society, their website explains the various sections of the full test.

Here is a photo of Mack when he was much older. He was a sweet gentle soul and the best puppy nanny ever.
Mack entertaining new puppy Sarah.
Here is a photo of Annie, our 2nd Bulldog.
Yep, bodyguards
Zorro is my fourth Bulldog, he is almost 2 years old and hasn't shown any guarding skilss, but I don't despair...
Winston stood and growled before me when he was 4 months (!) old and my brother came after me late at night in my mums shoes and coat (she remembered a bit late that it was no time to sent her 14 year old daughter out with a puppy..).
Charly was a wimp the first years, but when he got older he sent a man on his way, just standing in front of him, with that piercing look in his eyes `you´ve seen that I have seen you!` He might have growled (he looked like he did), but it worked! He was very mature by that time.
Lucky was always there, if necessary. Never had trouble with Lucky around.
My dogs are/were no barkers, but I never felt/feel unsafe with my Bulldog with me. They are very good people readers and will act if necessary. They do need maturity and guidance to be a good bodyguard, but they are very reliable.
Ineke and Zorro
yes.
winston was lazy and could care less about anything. When we got Hazelle, he started to bark at people at the door ect. when we had a baby, he began to bark at absolutely everyone and everything.
last week he pushed open the front door to chase the paperboy.. not a good scene.. he is as nice as can be with us, but we have to make sure we lock the screen door and put him in our bedroom until company is settled in the house.
he apparantly does not bark or care about anything when we are away and my sister is watching him.
bulldogs ehh!
got some pics of Mac?? Robin was does ATTS stand for??
so....really makes you wander how far they would go to protect you.
personally I do not want to have to find out..lol
but serious some bulldogs can really really bark loud.
Bella has started this deep deep bark..just lately..
Gus is always loud but that might be the deafness in ..not sure.
I know that the one time I came home with my son and Gus was in the house and WOULD NOT LET us in.. he was barking like a wild man. the lights were out in the house and he did not hear it was ok. We had to get a flashlight so Gus could see us and he was fine then. Bella was alsep in another room behind a closed door. so even being deaf..he still protected the house. I think he must have seen the lights in the car in the driveway when we came in and when he seen the outside door open..that was IT.
Similar experience
I've had 4 or 5 of my dogs thru the ATTS test, several at events put on by the Cincinnati Rottie Club.
My 1st Bulldog Mack, at the sight of the 'Weird Stranger' hit the end of the leash so hard it sang like a high tension wire in the wind! He let out one DEEP rumbling bark that could rattle windows and he held the most magnificent stack I've ever seen and NEVER let the guy out of his sight. And like your dog, was ready to protect me from the 'weird stranger' from the sidelines while we watched the other dogs after him being tested. Mack was about 3 years old when he was tested.
The funny thing though was that Mack let the man come up and pet him after he took off his costume and was his normal friendly self to the guy.
My Hubby took our 2nd Bulldog Annie thru the ATTS test, she initially ducked behind him when the 'weird stranger' advanced on them, but quickly got out in front of him, all puffed up like porcupine and hurled barking insults at the guy. Annie was just a few weeks younger than the minimum 18 months old but they let her go thru anyway, I argued that 2 or 3 weeks wasn't going to significantly change her temperament or behavior.
I also took my mother's Collie/Beagle mix thru the test, mostly to insure there were 25 dogs present so the test could be given. What a giant wuss he was! He pee'd his pants when the guy came out from behind the blind.
interesting..got a pic of him...would love to see a pic
how old was he then?
that is cool
just goes to show.you never know what they will do
congrats on Gator..
excellent story and response
Protector!
About a zillion years ago I decided to participate in a Temperment Test with my champion male BD. One of the local kennel clubs was putting on the test with the ATTS personnel. We were the only bulldog, surrounded by Rotties, Dobes, Bullmastiffs, etc. You get the picture. Not a wuss in site except for mine.
To make a long story short Gator trumped all the exercises leading up to the "aggression test". At this point I thought we were toast. Your dog was on a 20 foot (I think I remember correctly) lead. You had to walk past a tree whereupon a man jumped out wearing a raincoat and hat and make threatening motions with an umbrella and shouting. I thought my wuss would turn tail and head for the van. To my astonishment he starting running toward the man, hit the end of the lead and was barking his head off. He passed the test! When the man went back behind the tree for the next participate, my wussy Gator went for him again. What a dog!
He was the first ATTS registered bulldog in the State of Florida,
CH. Thunder Bay's Insta-Gator, TT. He was a star!
Ages
Buddy will be one on Monday. Brother will be 7 months old April 11.
Steve
how old are your dogs? mine would never bite either...
the cops told me of a case where a man hit his wife and the bulldog leaped up and bit the guy in the arm really bad..so push comes to shove not sure what they would do if it were an emergency and they had to act
how old are your bulldog?
Buddy and Brother
Or night and day. lol Brother hears everything, and barks. Neither like things moved. Brother is the Alpha, and Buddy is laid back. Buddy is no watch dog, he will watch for someone to feed, pet, or play with him Neither one would bite, they want lovin'.
