I thought since they came up on the rescue thread...it would be good to make a list of what it takes to be the best bulldog owner..
When I met Harley ..I was devestated. they had no idea what bulldogs were about. they did not realize they need walks, love to go for car rides, and are above all companion dogs. even being Deaf Harley needed to feel loved. with some knowledge I gave them and a few hand signs, Harley is out each day for a walk or two. he is playing teaser ball in his backyard and doing all his sign language. they take him for car rides and spend lots of time with him. their children are NOW sleeping with Harley too... what a big change.. he is now a great addition to there household. I am sure that bulldogs above all breeds...can feel neglect. they have huge hearts.
I think also offering a bulldog a safe place to live
food in the bowl..lol
a warm bed to sleep on
and tons of attention...
above all willing to take care of the bulldog through it life, up and downs and medical issues..
any others I forgot..
well said
totally agree
Well i spend more time convincing people NOT to get bulldogs bec
I don't want to see irresponsible people that don't know the first thing about a dog get them. So many people ask my husband and i about Dozer and how we afforded him, and is he a good breed to own. And not only am i honest i also play them down to discourage people who wouldn't be serious owners. I mention the price, the constant care, the vet bills ect..ect.. If after all my harping they still go get one their either completely stupid or serious about owning one. I like to hope that most of them fall into the 2nd category. I know that might not be the nicest thing to do but i would rather see a few good owners have them for the right reasons than everyone have them because their cute. I think being a responsible owner means educating yourself about the breed, how to breed correctly, educating others about the breed as well as setting a good example for other owners. I try to be the most responsible owner i know, and i spoil a bit in between.lol
I am worried that lots of bulldogs are bought because of the fac
thought is given to what it takes to take care of a bulldog and the health issues.
if you know someone considering a bulldog.try to inform them as much as possible. it would have really helped Harley if that had happened with the owners 2 years ago..
maybe one of the reason we have soo many in rescue
Look at those cuties!
What great pics...spoiled?? Never!! LOL!
another great pic..wow what a cutie
yea I guess if the rescue group does there work and people are prepared for a rescue..it would work out fine.
I was thinking more of a bully in a shelter type of place and just picked up there..instead of a rescue group. not sure how careful shelters are in rehoming dogs...
All my dogs are rescues-the rescue group just has to be diligent
dog matched with the right home. That is why we do home checks, vet references and personal references. Sometimes we are wrong and that is the hardest thing, to have to take a dog back into rescue. If a person is serious, they will do whatever it takes to help an older bully get beyond his issues. Trainers don't come cheap, but they are well WORTH every penny!
Ize got to hab eye dwops ebery day, but I don't mind(too much)
Noah is a LOVE BUG! (he also follows you around, so you have to make sure not to turn around too fast and step on him, haha)

there is soo much to know...I got a few good books before I got
lots to learn
research the breed
check out the breeder and so on
if we all passed that on to the people considering a bulldog I agree it would for sure help all bulldogs.
cuteness does not stop the moment the puppy grows up. I think that biggest thing that I tell people is that bulldogs are companion dogs and full of antics...even into older age
You are so right on Jessi
It means all of us taking the time to educate the people who don't know the breed.
Aww , look at thos pampered pooches!
Extra cute!
talk about spoiled bullies...great pics...
I at one time would have suggested a rescue too..but if they are not prepared for the bulldog in general how can they be possibly ready for a rescue. I feel a rescue is hard work and not for the faint of heart. the emotional issues that comes with the a rescue too.
just me but I feel soemtimes that a rescue would be a better second dog then a a first bulldog for some people..mind you not all. some rescues do well right off the bat.
if I steer them into rescue i make sure they understand this bulldog will not be perfect and will need to be worked with.
usually the cost is enouh to scare the people away that are not serious about owing a bulldog.
alot of people are looking for cheap bulldogs that I have talked too. go on to tell them all about the puppymills and such too..
just my thoughts
great discusssion..
Jessi (sorry)

Here Here, Jessie! I try to discourage because of expense, but i
to push them towards a rescue.
I love my babies to death, and I have met some awesome friends because of them, but if Brewster had never been left with me by my neice, I would never have gotten a bulldog because of the care and attention they REQUIRE! When I am too busy with work for a few days, I get a baby sitter for them. They need LOTS of love and playtime. Good food is expensive, and I won't even get into the vet bills. I am blessed to have healthy babies, but they are still the reason I work as hard as I do, to provide a great home for THEM!
Dats wite, we deserbe da best!!!! I iz a PWINCESS, after all!
Ize NOT spoiled, hehe
