According to Purina this food is not an als food but why not?

But I don't see why not. According to the guaranteed analysis it has 26% protein, 16% fat, 4% fiber, 1.0% calcicum and 419 calories per cup of Metabolic energy/447 calories digestible calories (if someone can explain to me the difference between Metabolic and digestible calories it would be most appreciated!)

As a comparison, the Fromms Salmon a la vegetable which I have my pup on is considered an ALS food and the analysis is as follows (Protein 25% Min ; Fat 16% Min; Fiber 3.5% Max; Calcium 1.2% and 405 calories a cup.

The two don't seem that different so am I missing something here...?

My vet told me a fish based dog food

would be good for them and actually add to their lifespan. I would think it would be good for a pup too. I went half and half for a couple of days, then 3/4 -1/4 then made the full switch after about a week. MightyDog (not a bully) will be 13 in March and this is the first time he's ever gotten excited about feeding time.

Salmon is the #1 Protein in this food..

My dogs coats are soft and shiney and hardly any shedding.

Purina Pro Plan for Sensitive Skin & Stomach..

For the same reason...no nasty tear stains. happy.gif

Thanks, Betty!

I am seriously on the verge of giving Purina a shot. Do you think my 5 month old pup would be okay on the sensitive dog formula? Also did you transition slowly or cold turkey? Right now I'm giving a combo of C. Natural puppy and Fromms salmon a la vegetable so I'm not even sure how to transition...

Their coats seem fine to me

Thick and very soft feeling. I haven't noticed any dryness. The food has salmon so I haven't been giving them fish oil pills.

Betty...how are your dogs coats on Purina?

That's the only main critism I've heard on other boards about Purina...that it left the coat dry. Do you supplement with fish oil?

I used Purina Pro Plan...

for my cocker and she lived to the grand old age of 13! Never had any health issues. I'm seriously considered trying that for the Tuffster since the higher end foods thus far are giving him loose stools..

Pro Plan

Sensitive Skin and Stomach has been a good choice for one of mine. Good coats, no real prob with tear stains, poops are good. And it is an easy brand to find. Have also used the Shredded Blends that have not caused any issues.
Dogs do respond differently to different foods.

Poops have been perfect

Very solid and once a day. I can't find anything bad to say about this food - other than what works for mine might not work for everyone. I've been thru every food out there and this has done wonders.

Miriam, about the Kirkland food...

Which one(s) have you fed? Have you tried the grain free Nature's Domain that Costco carries?

Thanks. We're currently feeding M&G Blue Buffalo but if I could find something as good and cheaper, that would be a big help right now.

You might want to check out

www.dogfoodanalysis.com if you want to see how Purina rates to Wellness. I use to feed Eukanuba for years and was shocked at the ratings. I am now feeding Kirkland food found at Costco for $22 a bag. It has a much higher rating, cost mucho $$ less and my dogs are doing great. Had no trouble switching over. Lucky for me none of my dogs have any allergy issues.

I use the Pro Plan for Sensitive Skin and Stomachs

and all three of my dogs are doing great on it. I barely have to clean my bulldogs folds or ears anymore since he's been on it. Before it was a daily mess. I've been very happy with it.

purina one

I have tried some different foods to help with the minor tear staining that Chloe has... I even cooked for her...
none of them helped, so I went back to what I was doing...I use Purina ONE Lamb and Rice for all my dogs (bully, golden, frou frou).
