NOW that the nice weather is here..and the wasps are coming back in full swing..one solution that I have tried and it works awesome is to buy some fake wasp nests. they come in groups of 2 usually at your hardware store.
need to be put up before the wasps have set up home..at your home.
put the nests somewhere that is very visible..
wasps are very territorial...and WILL NOT COME where they see another nests.
they work awesome.nothig worse then a wasp sting for a bulldog..
they do not keep about the bees from the flowers...
the other thing is to consider a bird box for the wrens. they all only eat wasps and spiders for their diets. they sing beautiful as well. I have several nestboxes up at the house here. they are very intereesting to watch build the nest and the mom and babies are cute too. they have 3 groups of babies a year so they will protect your house through the whole summer. they head back to next in the start of April.
I had litterally 1000's of wasps here..surrounded by bush and then all the flowers..last year had like maybe 10 the whole year.
about WRENS
they hole in the bird house is very small for a wren. there are not many other birds that can fit in the birdbox. any other bird that does will be an insect eater anyhow. only insect eating birds use the birdhouses generally.
wrens are very territorial..if you put out...a few birdboxes..the male will build a nest in all 3 of the boxes..2 are dummies and 1 will be the real nest. just empty the other birdboxes if that happens. I have had wrens at my house here for 20 plus years. they are easy to attract, are very tolerable about the dogs and humans. they sing georgous and squak loud if they feel threatened. they will only eat wasps..like 90 plus percent of their diet..actually any insect that BITES..they eat. they are an awesome addition to any property.
having studied birds in the wild outside my home for years now...I have seen many a happy wren family leave...
the other birds and the wrens come back about the same time that will use the box. the wrens can chase off anything else..lol.
a swallow is another good bird to have around..they might fit in the wren box...but then they eat the wasps..any insect that flies.. they eat their weight in bugs everyday.
I use no presticides or anything else for that matter around my house..even the grubs are controlled with the crows in the springtime. it works great
they are my passion and my side hobby.
here is how to make them for FREE...I prefer to buy them..they a
Take some old newspaper and crumple in balls. Stuff into plastic shopping bag and tie closed. Stuff this into a paper lunch bag. Hang up in the corners and other places wasps may like to nest in your yard. Done! Even with my 'helper', this took literally minutes to do. I really hope it works!
try to put them out before they GET back......I buy..
2 sets of them..you can use them year to year...
I put 2 up in the front of the house and 2 in the back of the house
I have a large lot though...
they are truly an swesome invention
Pat that's an awesome tip!
I had no idea! I got stung last year and it hurt. I'm going to def. look for those in the hardware store! Thank you so much. =)

But how do you get wrens to show up at your house?
won't other birds take over the house if they arrive before the wrens? Love the idea about the wasps.
