WARNING about dogs in shopping carts such as at Petsmart

Yesterday, I unfortunately witnessed an absolutely horrible accident right by the front door of a Petsmart. Two guys were headed out the door. One was pushing a shopping cart that had 3 dogs in it. One of the dogs was standing at the front of the shopping cart with his paws on the front edge. The guy pushing the cart was moving a bit too fast to keep up with the friend ahead of him. Right as they got to the front door, heading out, the guy pushing the cart suddenly stopped (I think he stopped to wait for the automatic door to open, or maybe to let someone coming in pass him). When the guy suddenly stopped the cart, the poor door literally when flying up in the air head over heels and then fell straight down but with its paws pointing towards the ceiling. I think the dog was a Yorkie mix. The poor dog landed flat on its back, neck, and head. The dog screamed like you would not believe and pooped and peed all over the place. Everyone was absolutely horrified. The guy at first picked the dog up and tried to get it to walk but the dog acted like it could not use its rear legs, so he took it back to the rear of the store. About ten minutes later, he came back towards the door and said the vet told him the dog was okay. I am doubtful he really had the poor door checked, but even if he did and the vet did say that, I suspect the poor Yorkie probably has a disc injury.

All of this happened just about 10 feet from me, and let me tell you, it was one of the worst things I've ever seen. When the dog went flying head over heels out of the cart, for a second it was almost as tho he was moving in slow motion.

I've been praying for the poor guy, hoping that he was not seriously injured.

I don't take my dogs there..

It's a germ magnet! Stores like that are the first place anyone picking up a shelter dog adoption goes. They pick up their new family member and head off to Petco or Petsmart or whatever big pet shop chain is in their area to buy supplies.

Germs are not the biggest concern. What is more scary is that most of those people in there with their newly adopted pets have no idea how their dog will interact with other dogs and they are excited to test them out on your dog.

I hope he is going to be ok, can't imagine. . .

poor little thing

Poor little munchin. Sure hope it's O.K.

I would certainly have him checked out thoroughly by my own vet.

As long as you don't push your cart fast and stop suddenly

your dogs will probably be safe in the cart. Or maybe keep a leash on them while in the cart. Also, I'm not sure a heavier dog like a bulldog would go flying out the cart. The dog I saw it happened to probably didn't weight 6 lbs.

Morgan sometimes rides in the cart

I leave her leash on and keep a tight hold on the leash at all times. I would never put one in a cart with out having a hold on them.

I feel so bad for the dog at Petsmart. I'm sure it was awful.

I hope this baby is o.k. Sluga jumped out of our cart

at Lowes once and I don't take him in there anymore...
