Vocabulary
Submitted by onslowsmom on April 21, 2010 - 12:39amThe amount of words that Onslow understands continues to floor me. I just found out this weekend that he does not care for the word "work".
I said to him, does that work OK? I was holding his toy for him. As soon as I said that he started barking. OK is the word we use to calm him so I repeated "work" and got the same reaction, WOOF!
I started to think about it and I think I know why he doesn't like the word. Ever since he was a teeny puppy when I leave to go to work I come over kiss him on the head and tell him I love him and I'm going to work. I'll see you when I get home.
He has associated work with me leaving. =( Work, eeeew.
And this dog listens to our conversation even when we aren't talking to him.
Examples:
(Talking to my mom on the phone Friday night)
Oh we'd love to come to dinner, what a treat! ----------Onslow WOOF ! TREAT?????????????? while sitting in front of his treat drawer.
(talking to Sam)
I haven't had a slush puppy in years. ----------------Onslow WOOF ! Puppy?????????????????
Me on the phone with my mom, again
How is the cat feeling? ----------------------Onslow WOOF ! Cat??????????????
And if you really want to confuse the hell out of him ask him if he wants to go swimming in the bath. LOL
Swim ---- Onslow c'mon mom lets go lets go lets go!~ WOOF! (loves swimming)
Bath ---- Onslow, disappears(where did he go? He hides from the bath)
Mix the two and its the biggest head tilt you've ever seen. LOL He just totally cracks me up every day. =)

Gus is very very smart..with being deaf even...
I think that Gus knows almost as many words as my hearing dogs..
alot of words get spelled out loud around the dogs here..
they know way to many of them..lol
good thing I can spell
if they hear the word treat in any way..that went for halloween night too. they heard trick or treat by the spooks and they all headed to the kitchen looking for a treat..lol.

It occurred to me just yesterday that Chopper knows one Greek word...Opah! He knows that means: step up into the car, jump on the couch next to me, or let me boost you onto the bed.

They are amazing, aren't they. Dolly understands so much too. Today outside, I told her to get her ball. Of course, she started looking right away. So I said, I think it's over there & pointed. Dolly knew exactly what I meant, turned in the direction I pointed & trotted off to get her ball.

and Bella took off running and hid in the bedroom.. I swear she knows what we are saying.. Like Onslow if we go " come on bella want a bath" she is long gone.. my dad even tried it at his house one day and said " come on bella want a bath" and he couldn't believe it she took off down the stairs running.. Also we sometimes have to spell things ( sounds insane ) but if I say. "hmm maybe I'll take bella for a walk or to the park" then I am stuck and have to go b.c. she follows me around thinking she is going.. as soon as she hears the word " park".. they are so smart and so silly..
