Valley Fever

To those bulldog lovers in Adminzona and California please have you dogs checked for valley fever. Our Bully (Tequila) lost her battle with valley fever after a year and 1/2. We miss so much....

Canine Valley Fever

Krista:
Valley Fever is endemic to the central valleys of California (I lived in Bakersfield, CA, for 10 years and saw MANY cases in humans there), parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. It is caused by spores in the ground which are inhaled. The spores are carried by wind to humans and dogs. It is not contagious from person to person, from person to dog, nor from dog to dog. Severity varies from individual to individual, dog to dog. It can be a mild lung infection or it may be rampant and manifest itself in the lungs, bones and brain, making the unfortunate "victim" very ill indeed. MANY folks in California contract a mild form of Valley Fever and are never even aware of it...it causes them no problems whatsoever and they develop a resistance from the initial exposure. No problems. Others are not as fortunate. For information, please go to www.arl.arizona.edu/ and "click" on the "canine" link of the left side of the page.

Thank you so much for the warning... we're in California, and it's always nice to be forewarned... however, what is it?

Can you offer any more information?
