Update on Winstons cystine crystals

Ok so I brought Winston to the Vet again today for x-rays and blood work. Xrays shows that he has a handful of stones in his Bladder, they are relativly small. Vet advised me to put him on a ROyal canin diet (urinary/UC formula....this is very new)to help break up the stones i believe is the way she put it. After a month he is going to get more x-rays to see if they have helped. If not I think he will require surgery to remove them wich is going to cost me about 1500 dollars. Ugggg I have to do it even if i do not have the money to, he is my lil boy.

Stella is on RC urinary SO13

We're in Canada, so maybe that's the same food you are tryingout, but with a slightly different name. Totally did the trick for us!

really? lets see a pic..

Junior is the golden boy in this house. He is our first born boy and cherished like a little king. Roxy owns me and Junior owns my husband. Then there's the middle child, Belle, who loves the cleaning lady.

Your dog Junior

Looks just like my boy Winston

forgot to add..the Uniary food comes in a moist form as well..

I used the moist as well and added extra water to it to make it more moist. it is a very dry looking moist food so it works good. the pug loved the moist but had to be on it long term. she is with my ex now and he took her off the food and did not do the bladder training anymore..and she got another uniary infection..this time in her kidneys.
but when she was with me..I had it under control with the diet
and timed outting..
I put her out every 2 hours on the hour during the day ..and in the night if I was up at some time..

I even added unsweetened koolaid to encourage this pug to drink

it worked too.
the vet had to use it one time for pig that would not drink..they used non sweetened koolaid and it worked as well for the pig.
soak the food,
the uniary diet comes in moist form..try that as well

tell me about it...

I've got 5 dogs and water everywhere. Two bowls in the kitchen, one in living room, one in my bedroom for Roxy, one for Ted in my daughter's room, and my rescue foster has a bowl and a rabbit bottle. I change them all several times a day.

Belle drinks a lot of water, but evidently it's still not enough. I soak Junior's food in water and then add more warm water to it just before mealtime. I do that for him because otherwise he gobbles and chokes. Only way I can think to get more water down her is to soak her kibble.

Re: maybe, maybe not..

Problem is Winston is allergic to wheat and grain and i think prob tomatoe. I would like to see how much he is drinking but there are two dogs in the house and it is hard to figure that out.

maybe, maybe not..

I chose not to feed Orijen because of the high protein count. Belle still has crystals. She's been on Canidae Lamb and Rice for a long time. I switched her to NB duck when we first discovered the crystals.

I'm going to try soaking her food with water and setting up a rabbit water bottle for her.

How did you come to the conclusion that Purina foods were bad fo

I could find nothing in the article that says that. I like the idea of soaking Belle's food. The vet told me to give her more water and that's a good way to do it if she will eat it that way.

got to the point where she did not need surgery.....

shrunk the stones lots
what you can do is add the chicken broth that is a good idea..non salted type..
but also even if you have a doggie door..take him out..
the point of it is to kinda retrain the bladder to empty more
believe me..the more you take him out ..the better
for at least the next couple of months

with a dog door....the dog just goes out...and goes when they want
when you take the dog out..they mark and so on and just kinda go more often outside..

Re: I hope the food works for him. Belle's results came back...

He was on, Orijen Fish. I know there is alot of protein in that food and I use to mix boiled hamburger in with it. So I am sure the overload of protein might of contributed to this.

I hope the food works for him. Belle's results came back...

My Belle's urinalysis came back showing she still has crystals in her urine. Xray a month ago showed no stones. The vet is trying to figure out what to try next. She's supposed to call me tomorrow. I'll mention the RC food. We tried the c/d already. The good news for Belle is she has no symptoms other than "sparkle pee." She likes to go on the cement and when it dries it sparkles like it is full of fine glitter.

What food is Winston on?

Best Wishes for Winston...

I don't have any knowledge to share but I sure hope the food helps & you can avoid the surgery. happy.gif

I did an article on Dalmatians and bladder stones.

All Dalmatians have them and have to be on special diets and drink lots of liquid.

Here's the article. Maybe there's some info in them. One thing i learned though is not to feed dogs with stones Purina foods.

Woof!

Did it

Get rid of the stones? DId your dog have stones....and I was thinking about putting chicken broth in his food to make it wetter. Also my dog has free reign to go outside whenever he wants. We have a dog door for him.

that food is great though...

I had a pug with the same issue and the food did wanders..
one thing to make sure if that your bulldog is drinking lots with the food ..that will help too
what I also did with the pug was to make sure she emptied her bladder more often...
and that involved the middle of the night even..
I stuck right to this and she avoided the surgery..
