I spoke with my vet today. My ACTUAL, old vet, the owner of the practice. I decided I felt more comfortable talking to him since I've been with him since 2003, even though he's trying to retire and cut back hours. (He can do her spay, too, if and when the time comes...)
Here are the Cliff Notes since it created an interesting discussion the other day:
--- According to Connecticut law, every dog that enters their practice for any kind of surgery has to be vaccinated for rabies. I didn't ask if it was after 12 weeks or after 6 months of age, because that didn't matter to me. But by law, any dog operated on and there recovering must be vaccinated. They will not bend on those rules no matter who you are, how long you've known them, or how good an owner you are. They are very aware that the state could show up and they need to be able to show documentation to whoever walks through. There are a couple local vets currently suspended for this very reason so they are very gun shy.
--- As for spaying after one heat: he doesnt really care one way or the other, hell do either. He doesnt feel there is a whole lot to be gained by waiting. In fact, sounded like he leaned more towards earlier less dangerous, reduced risk, ease of surgery, less complications, smaller uterus, not as engorged blood vessels... but that's up to me.
--- And contrary to the phone answerer, I can definitely take her home that night she wouldnt have to stay! YAY!
I'm stuck with a lot to think about. I just want what's best for my dog, and THAT is never easy. Gah!!!

I never said I was going to do them at the same time... HEAVENS
That's not in my post at all. Just want to make sure that's the LAST thing I am planning on doing. That defeats the entire purpose of my issue. STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM. I don't think there is any argument for doing the two together at all.
Neither is my vet. They're just saying that one has to occur before the other legally, and I want it in reverse. They require rabies for spay. I want spay then rabies.

I would do the shot and then wait....
a little while and then spay her
vaccinations are hard on dogs..
but I would do the spay before she suspect her first heat..
goodluck Julia
it is never easy to take them in for a spay..
i was worried sick with each of my dogs when I took them in...
I think I'd give the shot and wait a bit...
give her body a chance to recover from the vaccine before putting her through the surgery. Doing both at the same time seems like a lot for her little body to deal with all at once.
Maybe there is a better argument for doing it all at the same time, IDK.
I don't rescue animals because I want to feel better about myself, or morally superior to anyone. The best part of my life with animals is the humility they teach and the humanity the foster.

I was a WRECK when Audrey got spayed
I am sure I got a 'crazy lady' label on my file at the vet's office too. I did wait til she had her first birthday, and she did fine! No problems at all. It was hard to restrict her too, but lots of things to chew on helped.

You guys are going to have to hold my hand through this... LOL!
I've not gone through a spay with a girl before. I was 10 the last time my childhood lab was spayed. Neutering seemed so easy. And Grover wasn't nearly as wild as this wild child. She is NOT going to like being restricted. LOL!

Oh my goodness, Wendy! =)
Two?! What a doofus that vet was. Yikes!
Don't get me wrong... I vaccinated the crap out of Grover when I got him at 11 weeks old. And gave rabies at 12 weeks. And he was FINE. No demodex or anything. A lifetime of awful allergies, so who knows...
I just want to put it off as long as humanly possible, so her immune system is as built up and strong as possible.
I think I have a plan of action though... we'll see.

I also
would go ahead with the rabies shot and then wait several weeks (2-3) and have her spayed. She will do great!
I only thing you have to remember about the spay is to watch the incision closely for several days after the surgery for any reddening or signs of infection. Cleo's incision looked great for several days and then it opened up and I had to take her back in to have a couple of staples and put her on some stronger antibiotics.
Glad your vet cleared up the overnight stuff. Unfortunately the office girls can't make a judgement call and have to stick to what they are told to tell every client.
I agree. Give her the dang shot and have the surgery asap.
You can go around and around over this and it wont change anything. Get the surgery done. To do that, she has to have the shot and it's required by the doggie daycares, etc. Besides... if you are at the park, Petsmart or anywhere else with her and she "bites" someones hand just being a puppy and playing, you are going to have a mess on your hands vs. being able to produce that shot record.
By the way, Henry got his rabies shot at 13 weeks old. The idiot vet I took him to was late for the appt. Apparently he had been napping in his car and the receptionist went out and woke him up when I got there. Still half-asleep, he accidentally gave Henry TWO rabies shots instead of one rabies and one of the other shot he was getting that day. Needless to say I was pissed, but Henry was fine. Didnt seem to affect him at all.
I think she will be fine and she needs to have it to be spayed and for you to use the doggie daycare. Just do it and be done with it Julia! You know you have to, so just take a deep breath and do it. You can do this! We will help you through it! lol
Thanks Denise. =)
She's hysterical. I love her to bits. She's brilliant, and fiesty, and funny. I wouldn't want a docile, boring dog. I definitely need a spitfire goofball. She keeps me on my toes!
I'm glad you enjoy hearing about her... I love sharing her with everyone. Like Amy said the other day, I feel like she belongs to everyone. I've been an active member her since ALMOST the very beginning and everyone felt so connected to my Grover. Losing him affected so many people, so I'm so glad I can share my crazy girl with everyone.

I understand
I have in mind to make some kind of memory box for Chief. I just haven't been able to make myself do it. It's hard for mr to be sad when Trace and the girls are demanding my constant attention. I usually do most of my thinking and rembering when I am alone in the car.
Fingers crossed it's like that here too! LOL...
That would be good!

Thanks Jacinda...
I forgot that you would remember. Yeah, I've been thinking about him a lot lately. I had had plans to have a project all completed for his birthday, but I haven't been able to do it. I just haven't been able to do anything related to him. Someday...
Gretl helps! She never really gives me a moment to get sad. Definitely makes it easier.
I think I've got a plan for this spay nonsense. I'm feeling better about it.

Julia, one more thing....
I just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed your adventures with Gretl. After 35 years breeding occasionally and showing bulldogs I am not physically able anymore to care for one. I lurk here everyday and I have so enjoyed your pictures and stories. I would take Gretl home with me in a heartbeat. I always loved the bad girls! She'll be fine with the spay surgery, don't worry. Get it done soon and then you can relax. Regards, Denise.
Give her the rabies shot and get the surgery ASAP,,,,
bring her home the same day and she'll be just fine. Calm your nerves with a nice cup of tea. She'll come through with flying colors. The only thing, I would not schedule the surgery on a Friday, usually no vet in the office on the weekend in case you need him.
that is good
also my daughter hd her female Petunia spay when she was very young, she came home the same day and it was like nothing had been done to her, recovery was amazing.
Well it does give you something to think about
I'm so glad you will be able to take her home the same day. That's a huge relief. I honestly think it's better to spay them before the first heat. I think the heat cyle just stirs up a lot of hormones and spaying early reduces the risk of mammary cancer.
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. I'm sure thoughts of Grover will be foremost in your mind.
