Took Duke to the vet yesterday and they had to muzzel

him, he's an OEB so he has alittle bit of a nose. My vet was out of the office and his partner came in and reached down and picked Duke up and put him on the table (no small feat he's 80lbs). I wanted his nails clipped and heartworm tested. I did warn them that he does NOT like his tails trimed. He called in 3 assistants, muzzled him and flipped him on his side. Duke just went insane, I'm holding his head and talking to him, he's growling, snarling, foaming, just insane. When they were done they put him on the floor removed the muzzel and he was sort of ok, until the vet wanting to make it better tried to give him a treat, Duke took it and quick and he jumped back like he was going to eat his hand, then Duke turned his butt to the vet and he acted offended. I told him I never give treats without first making him sit and for Duke to present his butt is his way of saying pet me, rarely do I get to pet his head before I have to pet his butt. Whole experience for Duke and me was terrible. Oh and the vet asked me if he has always been aggressive to people. I said not until just now.

I had a very bad experience with a vet muzzling my lab

Actually it was not the vet, it was his teenage daughter. I was going to board Sadie and they said she needed the bordatello vaccine, which is the nose thing. The girl came in, took one look at Sadie, and said she would have to muzzle her. I said Sadie was very cooperative and had never needed one. The girl took a step toward Sadie and Sadie kind of balked. It was all the girl and her attitude. So the girl demanded Sadie be muzzled. She was quite rough with my poor girl who always hated the vet after that. I complained and we changed vets, but Sadie was always very distrustful of any vet after that.

That was a long time ago, and I was a lot younger and I naively thought all vets knew best. Now I know that is not always the case and I will step in if they want to do something that is not in the best interest of my dog.

Sorry that happened to you. I would probably change vets if they treated my dog like that.

OMG..what a horrible experience for him!!

We NEVER flip a dog to do nail trims, we do them like you would do horse hooves, on all fours and pick up one foot at a time with LOTS of treats and yummies. If a dog resists, we don't do them. I would complain about that vet and your treatment to the Office Manager or Medical Director.

What an ---hole...that vet should read

'WHEN PIGS FLY' and watch Caesar Milan! such a jerk, I am sure he's screwed Dukes chance of liking the vet for life.

you could try the dober dawn method...

nothing to lose. You desensitize the dog to dremel trimming by taking it very slow- baby steps. It may take a few weeks to get him desensitized, but wouldn't it be worth it to avoid what you went through? He may not be as reactive to the dremel since it is different than the clippers.

Or if you don't want to take the time to do that, if you can get one nail done at a time without a fight, that works too. No reason to clip them all at once.

I would sedate him before I would allow anyone to use force like that again.

Here is the doberdawn link.

The best part of my life with animals is the humility they teach and the humanity the foster.

My vet is good, his partner is no longer seeing any of

my babies, I'll call ahead and make sure that ours is there or otherwise we won't go. I have tried to clip them myself and got two done before he started to growl, I'll just have to keep working on it from here. Our old house had a patio and he keep them pretty ground down, now we are just grass.
I'll have to hold treats in my hand and lead him in the next time we go or this boy is going to put the brakes on big time. To bad because he loves going anywhere in the car.

i never never let

the vets office do my nails...their to over agressive they act like their ready for war...i would find a groomer who is comfortable and not in a rush...
so sad your boy had such a hard time...becasue it just makes it worse every time you have them done...

its takes time and patience

my bully Wesley was the same way, I had to muzzle him and then started going very slowly with lots of chicken breasts and praise, maybe even one foot at a time. I use the dremel and he is god now. Still doesn't like it but for CHIKIN!!! anything!!! And we've worked up to no muzzle.

If you have another vet in your area....

I would never, ever return to the one you just went to. What an absolute travesty....now your Duke will associate not only nail trims as a bad thing, but the very trip to that vet will be a bad association. What an absolute idiot that guy was. Huh.

Pets and hugs to Duke. Poor guy.

What an unhappy experience...

for both you and Duke! I guess they didn't realize how sweet a bulldog can be when they are treated with respect and gentleness. Hope you and Duke are feeling better today.

just a side note..make sure you get the same dremel if you do th

I bought the pedi paws..not the best dremel in the planet and for sure not the quality that my vet has for the dremel of the nails.
I have seen a couple of threads on here on dremels. the next one I get will be a plug type of one in the wall if I can find it. the batteries die too fast in the other types for me.

a good groomer and then the video
sounds like an awesome plan

Find another vet, one who has some understanding of

how to treat a fearful dog. SO sorry you went through this.

Thank you everyone, I'm going to try and find a groomer

that uses the Dremmel and be there with him when they use it. I'd like to see how it really is done and then try it along with the instructions from the video. Yeah the vet was a jerk and we won't be seeing him again. My sister swears he's great with her cats. Maybe just not a dog person, go figure being a vet.

Unfortunately I've seen this done before...

when I was a student in the VetTech program, a male doc responded to a growling Chow by quickly forcing the dog to the ground and grabbing his neck/head so fiercly that the dog peed in submission and his tongue literally turned blue before the guy let the dog up again. Of course the dog would then let me bathe him but I was very wary of the whole situation! The owner never knew and I always wondered if the dog behaved like that before or afterward?!!! Hard to tell what imprints on an animal.

what about a dremmel?

Have you tried dremmeling his nails?
I would growl too if someone tried to clip my nails... if they've ever hit the quick imagine how upsetting that would be. I wouldn't trust anyone to do it again.

I am so sorry that vet was such a jerk.
Try and find a groomer that dremmels and is comfortable with the breed and will listen TO YOU, about the best way to approach YOUR DOG...

sorry it pisses me off that vets can be so arrogant sometimes.

best of luck
