Tie out question

Hi, I've got a question for y'all, first let me say that I am NOT in favor of tie out, those lines that attach to the ground, as a means of long term containment, but here's my situation....I live in a quiet gated subdivision, very upscale, lots of frou frou dogs, and seniors walking them. Mack has a perfectly lovely fenced in back yard, with an ocean view no less! Does he like his backyard? Not so much, but he LOVES to lay out by my front door in the sunshine about 8 ft from the door. I usually keep the front door open if he's there so I can hear a car or golfcart come by. But if he decided to run and say "hello" to any walkers by or especially dogs(he has never met a stanger or a dog he didn't like!)I would not have time to catch him, and I'm sure his 72 pound galloping to say hello would startle or scare anyone that didn't know him. I do not care for electric fences and there are fencing restrictions facing the road. So would he be stressed if I used a tie out while I'm in the kitchen on the computer 15 ft away???? Knowing Mack I doubt he would even notice if I used one, he's a beached whale in the driveway, I just want him to be safe, from cars and possibly bad reactions from people. It goes without saying he is NEVER left on one and we are talking about 30 mins or so until I decide it's too hot/cold or his driveway time is up. Let me know your thoughts as I appreciate all the knowledge and experience here!

I agree nothing wrong

with a tieout for peace of mind and I think a harness would be preferred over a collar.
I've used the tieouts while camping. The ex-pens can get knocked over.

Agree with Celine

I do not have a fenced in yard and if Onslow goes out it is ALWAYS on leash. I have a tie out to our apple tree and if I'm going to be out there with him (or where I can see him) I will tie him out with me. I would not leave him out there unattended though. Oh and I make sure he's got a harness on so he can't slip the collar.

Here he is under his apple tree. =)

I see no problem with that

We use it at the cottage on high traffic weekends, mostly for my dad's 110 lb lab who "like to meet people" too. The dogs pretty much don't notice them. I'd just suggest taking a look at him every so often to make sure he hasn't tangled himself up in it (you have thought of this, I'm sure). We use that steel cable wrapped in a plastic-type covering (don't kow what it's called) - it's very strong, light and they can't chew through it.

By the way, Stella never liked out beautiful fenced-in back yard either. Her theme song is "don't fence me in", I guess.
