I truly didnât want to believe this, but if it is true, then lets spread the word, and cause them discomfort. My husband is in the military and I am appauled. I can not believe that we would be faced with such a thing. It does bring back a recollection though. During my husbands last deployment I was the Co-Chairman for the Homecoming and handled all of the New Moms gift bags. Target refused our request then. These gift bags were for moms who gave birth while their spouse was deployed for Operation Enduring Freedomâ¦please take the time to read and keep the message goingâ¦.I can only hope it is not true. I can not think of one reason why Target would not let the Marines host their Toys for Tots drive (see below).
by Dick Forrey of the Vietnam Veterans Association
Recently we asked the local TARGET store to be a proud sponsor of
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall during our spring recognition event.
We received the following reply from the local TARGET management:
"Veterans do not meet our area of giving. We only donate to the arts,
social action groups, gay & lesbian causes, and education."
So I'm thinking, if the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and veterans
In general do not meet their donation criteria, then something is really
Wrong at this TARGET store. We were not asking for thousands of dollars, not
Even hundreds, just a small sponsorship for a memorial remembrance.
As a follow-up, I e-mailed the TARGET U.S. corporate headquarters
And their response was the same. That's their national policy.
Then I looked into the company further. They will not allow the
Marines to collect for 'Toys for Tots' at any of their stores. And during the
recent Iraq deployment, they would not allow families of employees who
were called up for active duty to continue their insurance coverage while
they were on military service. Then as I dig further, TARGET is a
French-owned corporation.
Now, I'm thinking again. If TARGET can not support American
Veterans, then why should I and my family support their stores by spending our
Hard earned American dollars and to have their profits sent to France.
Without the American Vets, where would France be today?
Feel free to pass this along to whomever you want.
Sincerely,
Dick Forrey

NOT TRUE! Target helps their communities
This is not true. I live in Minneapolis where Target is based. They started and promoted a policy with other corporations to donate 5% of their profits to community charities. They have done so for years. They support many fine organizations, especially arts and education. They have never said what is claimed in the post. They also treat their employees with respect, hiring the disabled and giving decent benefits. If it weren't for Target, a lot of fine organzations that serve communities around the USA would be gone.
Maybe Walmart started the rumors.
French Owned
I didn't read on that far. lol Explains a lot.
It is a true story, regardless. The guidelines are set by the Company. Pretty smooth.
Our Military deserves support
Target has a right to donate as they wish because our Military insures that freedom. Target is a multi million dollar operation. I am sure losing my business won't break them. Losing the business of all military families won't break them. Losing the business of all Vietnam Vets won't break them. Losing the business of all retired military won't break them. They will continue to operate. They will continue to take FREEDOM for granted. They have the right to be unpatriotic because My Son, and many like him, are in the military giving them that right.
When they refuse to support a Toys for Tots or a Vietnam Veterans monument, I have to wonder if this is an American owned company? It doesn't seem like anything a true American would want to be noted for.
The Military has insured our right to make choices. I choose to never spend another dollar in a Target store. jmo Judy
Fortunately I don't shop there, but ...
the collection of toys outside their store would be against the lease in some cases. (I work in the real estate dept. of my law firm). Some leases will actually have a stipulation in it what a lessee can use the "outside parcel" for and their assigned # of parking spaces. It may have been easier for Target to lump their response under their policy for charitable contributions rather than spend X amount of dollars contacting their landlord, having to deal with landlord's attorney and then having to get their own attorney involved and pay even more money to have the lease amended or to get written permission for the Marines to collect toys. Mind boggling isn't it.
I personally cannot see why they couldn't contribute a little something, but they have rules and standards that their accountants must answer to the IRS for.
So you see there could simply be other factors other than a french against american thing. Not to mention boycotting may hurt them, but won't change anything about their policies if they don't know why their being boycotted.
Truth and Urban Legend
There is some truth to this but I guess the most of it is an Urban Legend. The truth is that they do deny the Marines the access for Toys for Tots and according to the Marines they are one of the only major stores that does deny it.

I am thinking the same on this as you ...
the cut of benifits throws me though ..and that is why I'm gonna call them on it?I'm a curious little bugger...chuckle..ce

I agree.....someone needs to be on top of this at all times
A company will try and cut cost where ever they can. If no one calls them on it then they get away with it.....Definately a human rights issue.
Throughout history those who server their country are unfortunately not treated well.......we humans have alot of lessons to learn from our beautiful animal friends.
My husband used to work for Duty Free Stores, (DFS)....
a division of LVMH
Iu nderstand and agree with that part you must read it..but I wa
that any and all companies, whose employees are called to military duty ..must continue what ever they were doing before...and that the job must be there upon return...they are not suspose to be allowed to change any status's on the bases of military service alone...
now I'm not naive enough not to know there are ways around all of that ..but basically the law is to protect those called to serve...ce
Ce's Bulldogs and Friends Album
i understand your point
i don't agree with military bashing either, and i would be surprised if this was the company's intent. otherwise it would be commercial suicide, and i would certainly hope they wouldn't be that stupid.
Target is owned by LVMH...
They also own these other companies...

Quote from their web site--
"Today, 56,000 employees, 63% of whom are based outside France, share the Group's values. Besides its community action for human development - for example LVMH House, the LVMH-ESSEC Chair and the LVMH Asia Scholarships - LVMH carries out a number of initiatives through its commitment to protecting the environment. Faithful to its vocation as a patron, the Group is also involved in culture and heritage, humanitarian action, education and supporting young artists and designers."
It actually does cost an enormous amount for a company
to carry benefits....
It is an employment contract that can be entered into or not.....
We must all be aware of what we are getting ourselves into and signing.
I think it's how the dictate them not which ones...
I also am pleased with the ones they do support..but I would like to hear how they repley to the letter..is it just that they can only donate so much and they have there choices set which is certainly understandable..or...are they military bashing?I think "for me" that would matter ..not that they don't support ..but the voice that explains it ...ya know?ce

Re: don't support target if you dont' want to but...
I agree with you. The charities are great, but to deny the Marines to collect Toys for Tots???? That cost them nothing, and still NO? Although they will great you at the door with there credit card application....funny. I don't agree with their employee ethics either...the military is supporting us. It truly can not be that much of a financial burden on them to maintain their benefits...

The unfortunate thing is this is true of alot of chains.....
