doing research on murderers and rapists and child molesters, and see how many signatures you get, and i'll bet that every sane person would sign it. I just signed it.

there are laws & procedures these labratories need to follow. how the animals are kept, raised, purchased, and tested, are all regulated. strict documentation is required.
i would think the reason that you can't use shelter animals is, depending on the testing, these animals are bred, and used for specific purposes. pets of unknown origin are usually not used. procedures to aquire animals for research purposes are also very strict. strains of mice are specifically bred for research (do a search for nude mice, or knockout mice to learn more).
i am not sure how much of the petition i would believe. i would be curious to hear exactly what procedures are being done, and what for, from the u of az, not from some online petition.
imo using live animals to study is an important part of education for most people studying to be vets, or work in the animal field.
just as a note, i think some veterinary schools will allow students to do computer simulated surgery to learn, and these vets will actually graduate without ever performing a surgery on a live animal. do you want the vet to start practicing on your dog??
just some things to think about. (ok...flame suit on)

Thanks, Mina I feel very strongly about things like this...those poor animals cannot speak for and defend themselves...they need someone to defend them. I know alot of people don't believe that animals have feelings like humans do... but I think we all know as Bully owners that that is 100% not true. It kills me to think of those poor dogs with noone to love them...that they associate human contact with pain...so incredibly horrible

Thanks for the link, Mina..I just signed. In this day and age there is no excuse for things like this...and in response to Jack's post....I would suggest reading the link again. What I have never understood is how can animals be tested on and the results be compared to humans...we are totally different mammals. For anyone that believes in things like this...imagine your beloved Bully or other dog subjected to things like this.. Horrible to even consider, isn't it? Off the soapbox for now...thanks for listening.

I don't know if this still goes on, hope not. This vet was in vet school about 20 years ago. He said that during one semester, every student was assigned a dog from the local shelter. They had to care for the dog all semester long, take him home, feed him, provide his medical care, etc. And then at the end of the semester, they were required to euthanize their dog. The vet said this was done to harden the students to what their practice will be like, and that the dogs were going to be put to sleep anyway. I sure hope that was just an urban legend, tho he insisted it was true. Any current vet students on this board??

I was just telling my wife the same thing. I do not believe the animal should suffer at all though. There are a lot of strays that will be put down and if that is in fact their fate I beleive it would be better to learn from the animal, but I do not beleive that animal should have to suffer for even one second.
Here is a better idea. Why not do these tests on the animals on DEATH ROW! I for one would enjoy knowing we are making advances in medicine while some rapist/murderer is being tortured. Why not study on humans who have already lost their right to live. These poor dogs probably never hurt anyone.
I mean no offence to anyone, just giving my opinion here.

WITH ALL RESPECT TO DOG ANIMAL LOVERS THAT IS THE ONLY WAY WE CAN ADVANCE TECHNOLOGY AND FIGHT PROBLEMS THAT HURT US AND OUR DOGS. THEY MUST DO STUDIES AND RESEARCH AND IT INVOLVES THE USE OF ANIMALS TO DO IT. WOULD YOU RATHER THEM DO IT TO YOU TO SAVE YOUR LIFE WHEN IT HAS NEVER BEEN TRIED BEFORE AND NEVER HAS ANY REAL EXPERIENCE.RESEARCH LIKE THAT IS REQUIRED TO HELP SAVE PEOPLE AND ANIMALS IN THE BIG PICTURE. BECAUSE OF SUCH RESEARCH YOU ALREADY LIVE LONGER AND YOUR HEALTHIER FROM THINGS THAT HAS BEEN LEARNED IN YEARS PAST.

I vote for medical research on rapists, murders...
...and others who habitually break the law and fill the prisons!

A vet told me this horrible story:
