I know these guys too..... I even teached obedience and tracking on a GSD-club, while I had my old boy Charly. He used to go out with the puppies to learn how to track, and did his part too. The younger dogs were in awww of him, when he showed how a mad Bulldog looked like..... (ever seen one? Boy, was he ugly, he blew up at least 10 cm all around, and pulled his lips up!).
He learned the men how to place their beer high, or he would push them over to lick the foam!

When Lucky came, he would attend the puppy and trackingclasses too, and a lot of people told me that they never had seen a Bulldog work like him! And that became the story of Luckies life.

BTW did you know that GSD's are not intellligent? They just love to work and need to be teached over and over and over and over again!

Maybe there's no joy in his heart. I've had both, Bulldogs are funnier, and more loveable, imho, German Shepards, if ya train them will do anything you ask them to do, up to dying for you.. Also where he is in life, A young man wants security, and an old man wants peace.

He obviously thinks that animals have "to work" to earn their keep...but we know that just giving kisses and snuggles can be more rewarding to a sensitive owner. Bah Humbug to him!!

They don't realize all the joy they bring to our lives. Their only purpose is to be our companions and love us. People that think that dogs have to have a function, don't understand about the joy that non-sporting or toy breeds bring to their owners. I would die without my dogs and they don't have to do anything for me accept make my life!

Gabe was #6 among all of the Non-Sporting breeds in Novice obedience for 2008. Several of my other bulldogs have been top competitors in the various obedience levels, including High Combined scores at all-breed shows in the top levels of obedience.

my time is my own to spend as I see fit, I certainly don't need someone else to tell me what's worth it or not. I most definitely choose to spend MY time with the ONLY dog on the planet who's worth the care they require. My bulldog doesn't have to 'work', she only has to make me smile, and DAMN she's the best at it!

when she first came home

she was great in obedience class for puppies but when it came to obedience class for Bella at 6 months..she went on and on and on about how dumb bulldogs are in front of a class of people..
she was very rude...
she did not handle class well either..not the gentle approach but a firm one..and so on.
Bella started to LOOSE fur and went off her food.
took that as a clear sign enough was enough
waited UNTIL THE NEXT class when everyone was there.
and UP FRONT
told her to shove her MONEY and left ...never to return
I got an applause when I left..

Bella then went into obedience in the last year. she is older now and excelled..top in her class. the trainer was super impressed, he said he had working class dogs that did not have the devotion that Bella showed in class..the way she watched me soo closely.

some people are just very ignorant of the bulldog

in my case embarassment was the best OPTION for this lady..

Actually there are so many idiots out there and dog people can be such BIG MOUTHS.

There are so many breeds I would never own, some that are very ugly IMO...but they all have somekind of purpose and someone loves them.

I know many who think labs are the only dog worthy of breathing. But I certainly don't let it bother me - it's such a personal preference.

It's like saying the only type of pizza that's edible is pepperoni!

is showing them what a bulldog really can do. I have seen that attitude when I have Maverick out at obedience class and/or trials. A well-trained bulldog putting the "working" dogs to shame tends to make them think twice.

I can't tell you how many times I have had people come up and say "I didn't know a bulldog could do that" and then I get to go on and on about how amazing they are!

He can't help that he's really, really stupid. Feel sorry for him. He has never know the love of a sweet companion dog. Next time, just laugh when someone says this. Then go hug your bullie.

Not all breeds have to be working or sporting dogs to be enjoyed. Tell him if you see him again that your Bulldog's purpose is to be a companion and Dozer does a great job at it. And you know most people that own working/hunting/sporting dogs/ etc... have them just for pets/companions alone not for the job they were bred to do.
