Questions about the bulldog breed

Hi, I do not own a bulldog yet, but have been doing my research for about a year now. Is it ok to ask you all a few questions about the bulldog (actually it may end up being a lot of questions)? I have been reading all of your posts, trying to learn all that I can and admiring all the bulldog babies pictures on here for a long time now.I have found a breeder not to far from where I live and just went to visit her dogs and she was super nice and seemed very knowledgeable about the bulldog. She owns an adult male and female, and also a 5 month old female. The adult female had a longer snout and not a lot of wrinkles, the male had the shorter snout. So when these 2 have puppies any idea what the snouts will look like? Do the shorter snouts always have breathing problems? Do the longer snouts sometimes have breathing problems or never do?
I will not try to bother you all with too many questions in my first post.

Thanks for your time.
Tammy

well...

if your not intrested in showing...i would go for the longer nose....as you dont have the worry about suregery as much as a pushed in nose....charlie loves his rally and agility training....so it depends on you...if your looking for a couch buddy go short....also look into rescue their are alot of nice dogs out their looking for a home....

At the least

I would want a breeder that has done the CHIC and Eye Cerf. Ask lots of questions about Entropian, Elongated Soft palette and cherry eye surgeries. If those surgeries are prone in their breeding program I wouls stay away. The concern is to find someone that is truthful about their health issues. If you have a gut feeling of concern then walk away and find another breeder.

Re: pics...

Thanks for the help. There is so much to learn about these dogs. Unfortunately I live in an area where there are no dog shows any where around as far as I can find out. I will probably have to look farther out from where I live. Your dogs are beautiful. Thanks, Tammy

Re: The bulldog standard states:

Very helpful information. I think I will look for someone who shows and occasionally breeds. What screening test do breeders do? Tammy

this is what i call a long snout...this dog lived almost 13 yrs, she crossed the rainbow bridge a year ago tomorrow...

Koji 15 mos 1wk this is the bulldog we have now...

and that's why when we looked for another that was one of our priorities was a longer snout..even our vet says they live longer with it...

the first two bulldogs we had had short snouts and they each lived 3 years each...

The less rope on the nose the better the bully can breath is what i've been told...

The bulldog standard states:

FACE & MUZZLE The face, measured from the front of the cheekbone to
the tip of the nose, should be extremely short, the muzzle being very short,
broad, turned upward and very deep from the corner of the eye to the corner
of the mouth.

You can see an illustrated guide to the standard at this link:
http://thebca.org/illustrated1.pdf

Many factors influence a bulldog's breathing, including trachea, palate, and nares. Bulldogs with a correct layback can breathe well if these factors are correct as well.

All dogs have faults, but the correct layback is one of the main features of the bulldog. I would not consider breeding a bulldog with a pronounced muzzle. As breeders, we have an obligation to do our best to maintain the integrity of the breed standard.

Have you checked out the list of...

Bulldog breeders on the main page of BDW??? Maybe there's one close to your location??? I'm concerned that the nosier Bully you are talking about is not up to breed standard. You may be disappointed with the looks of a pup you buy from that breeder. What kind of pedigree will the pups have? Are the breeders showing their dogs? Check them out carefully. And good luck!

i think....

charlie has a longer nose than wilson and is alot more active...has no breathing problems in the sense he does not over heat....can go on long walks for an hour or more...
wilson has what i would call the classic bulldog face all wrinkle pushed in nose....he has a little more difficulty in the running and over heating department but he also has a hypolastic trechea and this may add to his problem...
when i take charlie on a long walk i bring a wagon for wilson when he gets tried...
some pictures

this is charlie and his nose is a bit long....

this is wilson a more classic bulldog face just meaning it s shorter...closer to the face

Bulldog questions

Great information! What kind of health certification am I looking for? I suppose I really need to look for a person who shows and occasionally breeds. Thanks for your time and knowledge. I definitely want a healthy pup.

Bulldog question

Thanks for the good idea about contacting a bulldog club in my area. I will do that.

Hi Tammy

Nice to meet you and post away!! BDW is an excellent resource!!
I don't think that just because a Bulldog is nosey it will neccesarily be a better breather. There are a few factors that contribute to how well or poor a Bullie may breathe. The standard that reputable breeders strive for is a dog that is not nosey. So yes, a nosey dog can be a poor breather.

Now what the pups may look like can be a mixed bag. Some may be a mixture of the mom and dad. Some may favor the dad while others favor the mom. Some may look like a grand parent! A good indicator is looking at other pups produced by the stud.

Now to better your chances for a healthier pup, ask if the breeder has any health certification on her male and female, Does she know the trachea size?? Cerf (eyes) a chic number (Cardiac and patela). Also ask if she is a member of the BCA (Bulldog Club of America) and or a local Bulldog Club. Do their dogs hold any Champion titles??

Good look to you in your search. Many people say they research the breed, but end up with problems because they did not research the breeder enough. I applaud you for your due diligence!!

I have never seen a bulldog with a longer snout..

but that might just be me. sounds more like a american bulldog to me.
any english bulldog that I have seen all have very pushed in snouts..all of them.
never seen one without it.

goodluck with your new puppy
welcome to BDW too..
lots of great info on this site.

be very leary about backyard breeders. have you thought of making contacting the bulldog club of america and finding a respectable breeder in there.
what I did was contacted the dogs in Canada book and found several bulldog breeders and from there called and then went and seen the dogs..long before I made any decision on the puppy that I wanted. I have 2 english bulldogs and both were my first bulldogs.
just gotta be very careful when purchasing a bulldog..
