Hello! I'm new here and so excited I found this board. What a great resource for fellow bulldog owners! I am a new mom of a now 14-week old puppy, Maya. She is such a joy; my husband and I are really relishing her and even the cat is starting to come around. I have a question though. Everytime I take her outside she insists on eating everything in sight (rocks, twigs, leaves, dirt, etc.). I feel like I am constantly sweeping stuff out of her mouth and then proceeding with a firm "NO!". This has been going on for about 2 weeks now and getting progressively worse and in the Texas summer heat it gets hot for both my puppy and I to stand outside wrestling with each other. Any suggestions? Will she grow out of this and why is she so persistant?? Going outside is becoming a real nuisance!
Thanks for the help!

Same thing here..
Zimmer is 11 weeks and eats everything outside, sticks, rocks, dead & live worms, grass, leaves, you name it. I've done 2 things; I've tried to sweep the sidewalks where he walks, and when I see something he might want to eat, I step on it before he can get to it. My back is killing me from bending down and sticking my fingers in his mouth. He also chases leaves! Good luck, I'm right there with you.
TEACH HER DROP IT!!!
BOTH MY BULLIES FOR THE MOST PART WILL DROP IT IF I TELL THEM TOO. THE WILL NOT DO IT WHEN I FIRST WALK IN THE HOUSE OR YARD BUT WILL AT OTHER TIMES.
TAKE IT OUT OF HER MOUTH, WHEN TELLING HER TO DROP IT. PUT IT ON THE GROUND AND THEN MOVE ON. ALSO TEACH HER TO LEAVE IT, WHEN IT IS ON THE GROUND AND SHE IS GOING AFTER SOMETHING, TELL HER TO LEAVE IT. WHEN SHE LEAVES IT GOOD GIRL...
SHE IS A DOLL. CONGRATS AND WELCOME THE THE WORLD OF BULLIES. A WORD OF CAUTION, YOU CANT JUST HAVE ONE!!!!

Thanks so much for the info Kris. It's nice to know this is normal, but unfortunate to know there's not much I can do to curtail the behavior. Oddly, she's very good {knock on wood} about not chewing things in the house. For some reason the meaning of "NO!" alludes her once we step outside. Thanks again!
normal
puppies will put anything in their mouth - it is true. That is how they "check things out," so to speak. She is learning. You are doing the right thing with the "no"s. That is pretty much all that you can do.
One thing that helped me with the inside of my house (and my toes!) is Bitter Apple spray. One lick and they learn that it does't taste good. I sprayed it on wires in my house and from that point on NO ONE (knock wood) eats or even thinks of eating wires around here. So I could leave Cammy somewhat unattended when she was younger. She just ate paper - like phone books, mail, etc.
Good luck and where is the pictures?!!!

pics...did you go back to Net 54 and log in?...
A log in must be done 1st in order to see 'insert object' button. Hope this helps.
I agree with both prev posts on Bitter Apple, and to
teach to drop or relenquish to you upon demand. Puppies are just like babies, they have to taste everything, teaching her now is much easier, and will
be less expensive later. (health and property)
