This would only apply to dogs born deaf. You know how people who are born deaf have a different sounding voice than people who are born with the ability to hear? Does the bark of a dog born deaf sound any different from a hearing capable dog? With deaf people, I'm very impressed that they somehow can figure out the volume to use when they speak, especially since they have never heard a human voice and theoretically shouldn't know a low volume from a high volume.
I'm assuming the answer is probably no since a dog doesn't have to use its tongue to bark the way a human has to use his or her tongue to form words. So maybe my question should only be about the volume.

true...well written Robin..yea the growling...forgot about that.
that is true
Gus will adjust his growling
from a playful growl to a real growl..
he knows to lift his gowl when he growls for real too.
actually deaf dogs are very much like regular dogs..
deaf dogs adjust very well
like the vet said, the hardest part is for the owner to accept it..then it can be dealt with...many bulldogs that end up in rescue from being deaf. I am not sure that I understand why deaf bulldogs end up in rescue...to be honest. once a few signs are learned..it is very easy with a deaf bulldog or any deaf dog for that matter.
and here I tend to think that Gus is always loud..
he does bark LOUD LOUD LOUD. he is much louder then Bella. and Robin is right a higher pitch then Bella.
even the bulldog cry is the same way..he can change that as he pleases...but he will start off quiet..if that does not work..he gets louder..and louder
I do not see much difference in Gus bark..he is just loud...when he barks.
deaf dogs will also bark in their sleep at night time as well..
if they are startled..
Robin is right..if Gus barks...the rest of the dogs very seldom react. if Bella barks..LOOK OUT they all start and often Gus will join in too..
not sure I have ever heard a quiet Gus bark yet..lol
Re: question
Sorry to jump in here when you asked Pat, but I've also had a bit of experience with deaf Bulldogs. The ones I know do have a louder normal bark and it tends to be a bit higher pitched. But they also seem to know how to modulate their volume and can do the quiet 'woofs' and yodels like the other Bullies do. And they do play growls and 'for real' growls too.
If one dog starts in barking here, soon all are barking. Thankfully the barking has a short duration. But it seems the hearing dogs can get the deaf dog going easier than the deaf dog can get the hearing dogs to barking? Must be something innate to it all.
