OT: Thinking of buying a Dyson

The first I ever heard of Dyson vacs was on here and many of you seem to like them.

Which one do you have. Is it worth investing in the "Animal" version. Or do you like the roller ball.

Any tips would be welcome (or if you have a vac that you like that is less $$, I'd love to hear about it too)

We have the Dyson Ball DC24 ... we don't have carpet

just an area rug in the living room and a small amount of carpet in the camper. I love it. We do use it on the tile and wood floors sometimes.

Couldn't wait to get rid of that big ole Hoover.

What I miss though are the attachments I had on a canister vacuum. It was great for ceilings and the cars, wich I would have kept it.

We have a Lindhaus Activa 30... My midlife crisis :)

It's red and Italian and pricey. As close to a Ferrari as I'm gonna get. It works great on hardwood and rugs but no better than my old Dyson. Salesman talked me into it because you can use it to dry clean your rugs and he dished the Dyson. For the record the old Dyson is 6 years old and is still the bomb. I'd buy another Regular Dyson if I had a do over.

Dyson Animal here...

...and I love it. One drawback is that it is heavy, which leads me to use a smaller, lighterweight vacuum that I have, maybe every other time I vacuum... I am always AMAZED at how much more the Dyson picks up. I think it's worth the investment for sure.

I caved

always said I'd NEVER spend that kind of money on a vacuum. Hubby vacuums and bitched and moaned every time cuz ours kept clogging. It was a very good bagless Hoover but he just wasn't liking it.

Kohls was having a big sale and I had a 30% off coupon so I got a Dyson and including sales tax it only cost me $298. I got it towards the end of last year. To me, that was a great price and well worth it. Wanted the ball but that was alot more than I wanted to pay.

Hubby loves it, says its awesome. I didn't even know how to work it and just had him show me how to turn it on this past weekend so I could vacuum up the little pieces of carpet around the baseboards after it was installed.

ouch is right!

I had someone ask me if I wanted to buy a really expensive vaccuum once (it was more than $600) and I told them for that price I would be better off just replacing the dang carpet! AT the time we only had carpet in one room, so I told her that, and she said well it works great on wood floors too. So I told her that that's the BEAUTY of wood floors! You don't NEED an expensive machine to keep them clean!

I love my Dyson.

I have the animal vac. for the last 5 years.. I really do love it. Besides my bullie, I have a Great Pyrenees(tumble weed city) a German Shepherd a.k.a a German Shedder and 2 inside cats.. It works as good today as the day I bought it. I can't imagine what my house would look like without it. It is definitly worth every penny.

We have the DC-17

I am pretty sure it is an animal one. We just got it this past Christmas when Target was having $200 off, I think it ended up being about $350. I really like it so far, it has much more suction than any other vacuum I have owned. I am always disgusted by the amount of crap I empty out of the canister after vacuuming...ew!

I have the "animal".....

and I always tell people that it is sooo good that it sucks the dirt from the basement thru the living room carpet.

I will NEVER own another!

I've heard Miele is good too

But, here, it's another couple hundred bucks for the Miele. I can hardly breathe thinking about the price of a Dyson...

Céline and Angel Stella's picture

Glad to be of service!

Yeah, the one I'm looking at is nearly $600 with taxes. Ouch...

Julia's picture

They must have had a price reduction... LOL

Wasn't $45 today! happy.gif

I have had to replace my Dyson hose 3 times in less than 5 years

It is about $45 to replace. I am happy with my Dyson other than the hose doesn't seem very durable. Either that or I am very rough on it!

And thank you for making me post this...

My hose has been broken for over a year now, and I keep forgetting to buy a new one until I go to use it. happy.gif I just ordered it! Only $29.99! happy.gif

What we plan on buying....

I actually called a local vacuum store (which is family owned and has been in business for a milion years) and asked about the Dyson since I've heard so much about them and was recommended to buy the Miele vacuum over a Dyson, especially for pet hair

- they actually did not recommend any bagless vacuum for pet hair, said there was WAY more suction with a bag/canister type plus the Miele had a way better warranty and they said they are NEVER brought back or traded in, because I asked about a refurbished one - they run about the same as the Dyson

i have the canister one model DC 23

I really like it!!

I've had my Dyson Animal since 2003 and it's still rockin'!

happy.gif I would say you don't need the Animal version as it's only the attachments that differ, and I can't remember the last time I actually used the "animal" attachment. happy.gif

I do need a new hose - in my 7 years, I did manage to rip the plastic that covers the coiled hose... I'm sure it will be a fortune. But the vacuum is definitely worth it!

(For the record though, I did not pay full price... and wouldn't do so today. I bought it with a 20% off coupon at Bed Bath and Beyond before they started writing "Not valid on Dyson" at the bottom. LOL! happy.gif )

According to Consumer Reports ShopSmart magazine, the ball Dyson

cleans no better than the other Dyson models and the manuverability improvement is not worth the extra cost. They picked a Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Edition for carpets and a Kenmore Progressive 35922 for bare floors. For pet hair pickup they say Panasonic MC-UG-775. This is from their April magazine. I have a canister Electrolux with changable heads for each type of floor. Spendy but very durable and works great. I have 4 bullies in the house.

And always .....Winston

hi celine

this may suprise you but i have a dyson. lol. i have the purple animal one, i think the only difference between the animal and the regular is one turbo brush attachment that i have never used. i like the idea of the rollerball one, but i wonder how well it fits under furniture. we have only hardwood downstairs now so im thinking about getting the canister dyson down here and keeping the other upstairs. it has been a really good vacuum imo.

Dyson I have both the roller ball and the animal

love them both they are amazing. The rooler ball allows easier movement both pick up the same the roller ball is a little small width but that's about it
