Okay, guess I'll do this again...my first post vanished.
Edie, my dexter cow, is due to calve in the next month or so. I am waiting so impatiently. She was pasture bred to a bull last summer, so there is no exact due date. Their calves are tiny, 25-30lbs, so cute. I can't wait for fresh milk! And butter, yogurt, cream, cheese...
Here she is using the big play ball as a pillow:
And I have been letting her and Cookie in the yard so I don't have to mow yet.

Dawn, how much smaller are they
than regular cows?Do you think the feeding part is alot cheaper compared to a full grown cow?
Whoops, the pic with the horse and goat was wrong!
Duh, that'll teach me for not proofing before I post...
Here it is:
Adorable when they are little!!

Half as small
Here's a pic of Edie with my friend Laura:
And with Betty:
And with my horse and goat:
They are around 38" tall. They weigh around 600#. A full sized cow would be 1200#. They eat half as much. About 1/3 what my horse does (because not only are they smaller, but being a ruminant, they utilize what they eat better).
Also, if you are speaking of dairy cattle, a dairy cow in milk will eat twice what a beef cow would because they need the nutrition to produce a higher than natural yield of milk. Edie is a Dexter, which is dual purpose, not dairy. And Cookie is a beef cow breed. So neither require much hay at all. They get fat looking at grass. Yet, I plan on milking because they should each produce over a gallon a day still, and the steers can also be used for beef (dairy calves have little value for beef).
Cookie is not a Belted Galloway herself, she is mostly Lowline (a small breed of Angus) with 1/8 of a belted offshoot from Galloway called Buelingo. However, I will be breeding both girls to a very small Belted Galloway (they come in all sizes) bull and the belted heifer calves they produce can be registered with the Belted Galloway Society as Appendix (half breed). And if I keep heifers and breed them back, when I get to 7/8, I can register a heifer as pure Belted Galloway. They are endangered, with only a few thousand left, so this is my plan.

aww..
how can people raise them and eat them. I'd never eat another steak if I had a pet cow.

She's a mini-beltie
She's actually a Lowline (small Angus breed from Australia) with 1/8 Buelingo, which is a Dutch Belted cross. The belts are dominant. I will be breeding her to registered Belted Galloway bulls for belted calves each year that I can register as Appendix. It is a very rare breed now because they've crossbred it so much, it's on the endangered species list!

That is so cool....love love love the cows!!
Very sweet!
She loves to be groomed and walks perfectly on a lead line attached to her collar. Cookie on the other hand is only 1 year old and playful. She likes to butt and buck and play with toys. She also loves to be groomed and belch in my face.

Aww
Is she sweet? My uncle had a big Jersey when we were kids and she would follow us around like a puppy, always demanding to have her head scratched. Of course, a head butt from a cow was a little intense to little kids, but we loved her anyway.

can't wait to see the moo baby.

LOL Congrats on the new baby that is so cool! Great pics too. I guess even cows know how to get comfy. =)
