feeling nostalgic today. So I'm wondering if bookmobiles were a nation-wide thing or just in a few states.

I read lots too..and yes some great readers on BDW..
the bookmobile was popular here in Ontario years ago too..and the narrow rows..and books to the ceilings. it was a big day to go there and get books to read. I used to love those days
have always read lots and find it very entertaining. I am not a movie or tv buff...but books are a passion of mine
Isn't it interesting how many people on this board love to read?
I barely known anyone around me who loves to read and talk about books.

Also . . . in a way, bookmobiles were the computers of our time
or, a really really really big Kindle/Nook/iPad, [g].

Now that u mention it, I think it also only came to our area dur
been a long time, but I seem to recall that it used to show up in our area in the early afternoon, around 1 am or so. So it must have shown up only in summers, otherwise we would have been in school at that time of the day.
It sure left me with some good memories, tho.

Wow, I'm impressed, and the kids in your town are very lucky
with the price of gas what it is, I'm amazed that any community still has a bookmobile. But what a nice gift to the kids of your town.

I grew up in suburban St. Louis County...
And loved when the Bookmobile came to our area. I think it only came during the summer months. I guess the suburbs in the 1950s were considered kind of remote & the bookmobile came to keep kids reading during summmer vacation. Although I remember my Mom checking out books too. Fun!
yep - STILL DO too!!!
the bookmobile comes every Saturday at 10am to our local burrough building here in town....
Yep! We had them in Seattle.

Loved the bookmobile...what a treat that was!
our small schools used to have book fairs too - I always saved my $$ for them!! LOL
We had them....
in West Central Illinois. It still makes the rounds to the different towns in our county and also came out to the school as a supplement to the library there.
Rural Ohio.....YEP!!
I remember when I was a kid (ok...it wasn't as long ago as you though Gary) the book mobile would come to our school. I always loved going into it and seeing and smelling all the new books!!! I don't know if they have it anymore though...
We had them in Texas!
I loved to go to the Bookmobile. They had great books!
Grew up in Rural Nebraska in the boonies and the bookmobile
was very much loved and anticipated. It was a big ole greyhound bus type which smelled of diesel and had books floor to ceiling on either side of the tight aisle. I know Colorado had them too, as I had an Uncle who drove one to out lying areas near Fort Collins in the mountains. He had lots of stories of negotiating the big, heavy bus around those mountain roads. Thanks for the good trip down memory lane.
And always .....Winston
sure did
they came once a week after school, but you had to be the first one in line to get the good books. Then you returned them when they came back the next week.
