Some of you may recall that I got a donkey last month. He was born to a BLM jenny that was pregnant when she was rounded up. He was used by cowboys as a "roping donk", they practice roping their cattle on these adopted BLM donkeys. Anyway, I thought he'd make a nice friend for my horse, no equine should live alone, yet he only eats a fraction what another horse would eat. Bonus, I rode him yesterday. No saddle would fit him, but my dad was a jockey in the 1940's and I used his little postage-stamp of a racing saddle and it wasn't bad and Chili did great!

Donkeys come in 3 sizes
Mini-donks (like miniature horses, the size of large dogs)
Standards (the most popular and this is what Chili is)
Mammoths (like full sized horses and these are typically the jacks that are bred to horse mares to make mules)
Chili is the size of a pony. Most of the wild burros that BLM rounds up are standard donkeys. They are the feral offspring of prospectors from the mining days and were selectively bred for their bonding and sensible qualities to be a companion to the miners. It would have been no good have have your a$$ with an attitude run off with all the gear that you own in the world... Chili has these bloodlines, like an instinct like border collies that is bred into him. He almost prefers people to an equine, he really wants to be with me, but is still fearful out of self-preservation.
My farrier in the video loves donkeys and mules. He said, "There's no reason that everyone shouldn't have a donkey!" Great companion like a dog, very hardy and easy to care for, cheap to feed, you can ride them/pack them/drive them with a cart.

Donkey!
He is lovely! I love those little brown donkeys. I always wanted a donkey as a child, but we didn't have the room or the time for it..... So the brown donkey female Petra, who lived at the cityfarm had a longtime admirer in me.
But I have a question: the donkeys I've met were small animalls, about the seize of a Deerhond or Irish Wolfhound. Is your donkey so big, or are you short?
