I had one yesterday morning. I admit I was pretty scared going in, but it turned out to be a pretty easy thing to experience. Getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist is usually much worse (uh, sorry Karen). Anyhow, I was feeling pretty good yesterday afternoon, all of last night, and most of today, tho my legs started this afternoon to feel like I had run a marathon or something. Not real painful, but just very tired. Then, around 7 pm tonite I sat back in my recliner to take a nap. Felt fine the whole time I was in there. But then Boo woke me up because she wanted to go out. I suddenly felt like I could barely stand up to get out of the chair. Then, every few minutes my right leg has started to feel a sharp pain around the area of the calf (the catherer was inserted in my right groin, around the crease between my right leg and my upper body). The pain will only last about five seconds or less but it is pretty unpleasant. I'm wondering if this is common after a catherization, and if so, why is the pain so much far further down my leg than where they inserted the catherer?
I just hope I didn't pick up a staph infection while there. I had one last summer and that was a miserable experience.
Thanks.

Thanks everyone . . .
it's now Sunday morning, almost 11 am. I haven't had any pain in my calf since about 8 pm last night. Slept real well. I appreciate all the input and concern. Thanks again.

how are you today Gary???
you are scaring me too
did you go and get this checked out
I will keep you in my thoughts
You're scaring me Gary
Get yourself checked out. Weakness you described also sounds like a TIA or stroke.
Is the groin...
still soft? It could be a clot, and not necessarily all clots come with swelling & redness. Sometimes pt have come in with pain in the calf, and not had the symptoms of the above...but a pain in the leg that isn't relieved. Are you having any numbness or tingling in that leg? HOw is the color of the foot, and toenails? Cap refill? Do you have a pulse in that foot? Is this on the same side as where they went into the groin?
Technically, when a heart cath is perfomred, the stylette is weeded up towards the heart, not down into the leg.
Hope this helps Gary. Did you have a stent placed also? Or did the cath come back clean?
my uncle and cousin are both techs and to caths
my worry would be a blood clott. Does any part of your leg feel hot, tender, red or swollen? If you you need to see someone.

I agree...I would call dr's service and page him...
blood clot was my first worry. Hope all is ok, Gary!
If you have DVT the area probably won't feel hot
DVT, or Deep Vein Thrombosis, starts in the veins in your legs and then travels to your heart. Sometimes, if you are lucky, the clots pass through the heart and get lodged in the lungs. I'm not a nurse but I am very familiar with blood clots. My Dad developed DVT when he was sick with the flu. His first symptom was shortness of breath. He said it felt like an elephant was sitting on his chest. He was lucky and survied his first round of blood clots but it was touch and go.
Here's some info on DVT

No it's not at all hot
I also haven't felt the pain for close to an hour now. I'll wait a bit before deciding what to do. I don't have health insurance, so going to the ER is not really an option.

With blood clots....
The area with the clot is usually very hot. Is it? Gary I would call and ask about it. I have had several family members who have had the surgery but none had the same problem. But everyone is different...
I would be more afraid of a blood clot. (just my opinion)

I would call and talk to an emergency nurse or Dr. It could be,I
a piece of the blood clot that formed while the pressure was closing the opening in your groin broke off and is caught in your calf. If that is so, it could move on to your heart, lung or brain and cause big problems. I'd not wait on this one-just in case.
And always .....Winston
