he played Mr. Phelps in the TV series. Wasn't in the Tom Cruise movie version of the show.

He was also great in the movie Airplane. I was very surprised to read that he was the younger brother of James Arness, who played Marshall Matt Dillon in the TV show "Gunsmoke." Until I read that, I had no idea they were related.
