So Dozer loves the dog park and we love taking him there, we've made so many friends and it's fun for all of us. But these last few weeks Dozers behavior has been terrible. Anytime any other dog or person tries to take a ball or toy from him he gets mean. He doesnt snap at people but today he started a fight with a 150lb Malamute(big i know.)...I am so embarassed and confused. Why is my baby suddenly being a meanie? I have been working on the drop it, and sit commands and he does fine with me and my husband but if anyone else tries to take a toy from him he runs off with it and refuses to put it down. If a ball is on the ground between Dozer and another dog and the other dog goes for it he attacks them. I dont know what to do... Hes an angel at home but out in a setting with other dogs he's awful. After about 1 hour of hardcore training and drop it commands he was getting better but then a cocker spaniel came up to sniff him and he snapped at her. I just dont understand this sudden attitude change? As far as i know he's healthy and doesnt have any issues with pain or other things to make him grumpy, and he's fixed so whats the deal?
I don't take my dogs to Petsmart either...
Where is the first place people take their new shelter adoption dog? Straight to Petsmart/Petco/Petwarehouse, etc.. to get supplies and test the dog out to see how friendly it is with other dogs in the store. No way.

Stella was usually good with other dogs, unless...
there was a bone involved. Then - TROUBLE.
There were also some random dogs she didn't like either. Never figured it out, she would just hate on some doge (usually bigger than her), while she was fine with others. She never liked going to the dog park as a puppy, so I didn't continue. Probably wouldn't have worked out anyway.
Same here!
Onslow seems to love any dog as long as it doesn't look like him. So strange.

Bella has just started to NOT like other dogs too...
I just do not let her get near the other dogs. it is funny though just other bullies she does not like. I wander if it has something to do with being very protective. just a thought. that is what is happening with Bella I am sure.
noticed her far more protective around the house too..
I just avoid other dogs with her. when she is out and about.
Elaine is right and I know it's natural to want to ascribe human
to our dogs, but he's not mean or "bad" he's just being a dog. Some dogs have resource guarding issues around other dogs. Hooch has them and we can NEVER be around other dogs with a toy, treat, anything. We do not socialize with other dogs other than a walk now and then with my sister's very passive dog. If my sister's dog even picks up a STICK (which Hooch has no interest in) I have to make sure I don't let Hooch close becaue that could cause a competition in his mind.
agree with Elaine
I don't believe in dog parks. They are usually a place where people who love their dogs go to socialize, and yes the dogs are there. There are too many instances of fighting and bad behavior. There are also too many times when a dog catches something from another, who maybe isn't taken care of as well as yours. I t ave a dog that doesn't like others, and would never take him to a dog park, heck I almost have convulsions going to petsmart in the middle of the week at 10 in the morning LOL
Thanks guys, it's just kind of depressing...
We love the dog park and really want to be able to continue going. But i guess it's for the best..
Pugsley shocked me like this too,
He was great with other dogs when at the park or on a walk, or if we were fostering. But when he got to be around 18-20 months old, he started getting more attitude, now he gets down right aggressive with dogs he has never met before. He is great with the pack we have, but not new dogs. It really sucks on walks, it is so embarassing. I have to keep him away from other dogs, and the owners all want to meet him, but they can't because I have to tell them he doesn't like other dogs.

some dogs just can't go to dog parks..
Some dogs don't like other dogs and some don't like to share their toys. You can get a trainer and work on it, or you can control the environment rather than the dog. Don't give him toys or balls around other dogs and don't take him to dog parks.
