last night...now, I know Hooch will never be what some consider "perfect". he obviously was not socialized properly as a pup, and once those golden months are gone it's very hard to make up for lost time. When he came to us he was "shut down" and so scared of so many things, from lawn ornaments to parked cars...once at a restaurant that allowed dogs outside he totally freaked at the sound of a chair moving. But he has come a LONG way...
At the vet last night we had to wait outside for a bit because there was a HUGE aggressive dog in the waiting room (Hooch ignores dogs unless THEY are aggressive or anxious and then he becomes aggressive). Once that dog left we went in. Shortly after, two men came in to REMOVE THE SODA MACHINE. This made me a bit nervous because I was sure all that noise was going to freak him out, but no, he just startled slightly once and then was fine, concentrating on the snacks I had. I made sure to relax MYSELF (I learned how essential this is) and told him "It's ok" calmly and he really didn't care about the huge machine making all that noise.
So to anyone out there dealing with a dog with "issues"...there is hope!
so glad that Hooch has you guys
to help him...what a great life he has with you~~!!!

you are doing a wonderful job with your boy
and your right we do need to be calm, it makes me so happy to hear about all the obsticles that you are both getting over, it is one day at a time, give that man a big hug from us, way to go Hooch
Yes, I totally understand
I use the word "settle" for Twister
Yippy Hooch.. and your mommy and daddy :)
Hope everyone has a great day
Absolutely...timing is so important...I had to learn not to
"reward" the anxiety and learn WHEN to treat/when not to, and my "it's ok" is done in a calm, neautral tone, not in a "baby talk" kind of way if you know what I mean? Any way, somewhere along the line it worked!
way to go HOOCH
he did really well.
rescues are very nervous..I know with Max..he was very nervous in the start. he is much better now too
way to go Hooch
you must be doing something good with him so pat yourself on the shoulder too

Everything happens for a reason....and he came to us
because we needed each other!
Isn't it the best feeling? Congrats to Chuckie on his
progress!
Hooch you are such a good boy
What a wonderful story. I am so glad Hooch has improved and found a wonderful forever home with you.
Good point Jen!
I'll be honest and tell you that happened with Onslow he now gets upset when I tell him "it's ok" I screwed up. I say "easy" now and he's good with that.

Oh, there is absolutely HOPE!!!!
My Dixie would lunge into the air at dogs when I first brought her home at age 4....and with consistant & proper training (for both of us) she was evenutally able to show in competition obedience and at a level which required me to be out of her sight for sit & down stays and she would be next to dogs she'd never seen before, so yes there is hope and a dog can be retrained...
one thing though, be careful your "it's ok" isn't reinforceing his behavior it didn't sound like it in this instance, but it's so easy to do what we think is reassuring and helping to calm the dog, when in fact we are sending the message "what your doing is ok behavior"...I know, it's a tricky, fine line! LOL I used to get real nervous about doing things I thought Dixie was not going to handle well, but I also had to learn to "trust my dog" and she rarely let me down..
again, big, big congrats on making wonderful strides!!
We're all proud of you, Hooch!
You've come such a long way thanks to all the love and patience of you mummy and daddy! And I LOVE that pic of you with your teddy bear - shows your soft side!
That a way Hooch... Michele
anyone else would have given up. He has come so far thanks to your patience and love for him.
Good Morning Michelle, I am so happy for you both, your Hooch is
I am so glad he's made so much progress, I knew I turned a corner with Chuckie the day we went to the vet and he was able to sit in the waiting room with a couple of dogs and cats in carriers, and none of them reacted to each other, I was so proud of my boy that day, he will still react to a barking dog and he's still scared of spoons, brooms and other objects, but it is so rewarding when you see the progress, my Chuckie and your Hooch have alot in common. I wish you much more continued success with him and many happy years together, Evelyn
Now, you know that I think WE got lucky!

I know you are proud of him, and you should be proud of yourself too. You've worked tirelessly to help him and care for him. I wish all the pet owners in the world had that same love and dedication.
And what an adorable pic of him
You are an INSPIRATION!
