Information Overload--basic food question

First, this board is amazing. I am trying to remember what to do if the pup's nose dries out, the pup has a leaky butt, etc. etc. I mean I don't think I can remember all of this, so I will worry when problems start Adminsing.

OK I have read so much info on feeding, I can't remember. Some mention a percentage of protein, some free feed, etc.

What would you do with an eight week old pup? I know some books say it is ok not to free feed bulldogs, but The reason I prefer not to free feed is I have two other dogs. One is VERY food aggressive. She loves her brother..never any problems ..unless he has food. Thus, I feed them separately. It would be possible for me to free feed the pup if necessary, but it would be easier to feed her three times a day. Is that bad? If you say three times a day, do I just let her have food for like l5 minutes and take the bowl away? My other two would eat until they exploded if I did that, but as a pup I know she needs lots of food. My other two get a premeasured amount, and they go nuts when mealtime arrives. They live to eat (and they were like that before the established mealtimes). It isn't a case of being hungry trust me.

Also, the breeder (I think I have asked way too many questions) mentioned giving the pup a tablespoon of l% cottage cheese with her meals. ?? The pup will already be on the puppy version of the adult food I feed my two three year old dogs. That will be nice because eventually all three will be on the same. I guess I wondered if puppy food (which is very high in calories) plus a tablespoon of cottage cheese -- 3x a day is too much food? Is the cottage every meal or once a day?

Any specifics would be appreciated. I am paranoid about having a healthy bulldog. Luckily, it will be getting puppy shots for awhile, so the vet can help tell me if it looks fat/skinny.

Agree...

You just have to play it by ear and the pup. Make good choices on food and everything should go smoothly.

Sounds like good advice

Thanks

Forgot to add....

Feeding 3 times a day is good until he's 6 months old then change to twice a day. You don't want to free feed (if you're going to) until the pup is housebroken.

Also, I feed mine twice a day. In the AM they get a little vanilla yogurt in their food. In the PM they get a little watered down canned food with their food. The gobble it right down.

Re: Information Overload--basic food question

I use vaseline on a dry nose. Some use BagBalm & some use Vit. E.

I think that puppy food is to high in protein for bullogs. The protein level shouldn't be more than 22%. If the protein is to high it can force bone growth which can be painful for a puppy & even deform his legs/feet.

Good luck & just keep asking if you forget again.

My 2 cents...

I did the 3 meals a day when Daisy was a pup and did just what you plan to do...I left the food down for 30 minutes and then took it up if she didn't eat it all...Now she is almost 2 yrs old and gets fed 2 times a day. It is working for us. I think you could give the cottage cheese at every meal...I do for Daisy...it works great, it gives me somewhere to hide her supplements LOL!

Remember when your pup turns 6 mths old to change her over to the adult food.

My 2 cents..

I go by the puppy and his needs.. some eat a lot some not so much.. some eat a lot in the morning and not so much at the 2nd feeding.. you will learn the eating pattern of the puppy as you go.. I usually feed 3 times a day and I do give the cottage cheese or yogurt in each one.. and then a snack before bedtime.. you should be able to tell if they are getting enough by watching them ... relax and enjoy the baby you'll know what they need...
