How to stop a puppy mill

Actions we all can take
I guess I need to introduce myself. My name is Tanner. My girlfriend Michelle and I have a 4 month old English Bulldog named Darby Crash and have been lurking on this board for a few weeks now.

I read the story about the deplorable condition Cody was in when he was bought. While reading the story both Michelle and I had tears in our eyes (don't tell anyone Im a biker....bikers dont cry)I decided to do a bit of research and what I've learned follows.

Contact your local humane society and health departments, describe the conditions you have seen as specifically as possible. The humane society can act in cases of abuse and neglect The health department can deal with threats to public health from fecal contamination, dead dog bodies, etc.

to find out whether or not the breeder has a Class A or Class B license (a necessity if the facility sells to pet stores, brokers, or laboratories and makes more than $500 annually from such sales). The USDA will be interested if the breeder has a license and is not following the guidelines for housing, sanitation, and veterinary care or if the breeder is not licensed and grosses more than $500 per year selling puppies wholesale. If these conditions are not met, USDA can by law do nothing. No matter how much your sensibilities are offended by the plight of overcrowded, undernourished neglected puppies, they can do nothing. This really makes me angry (language changed at Michelles request). I feel like getting a few buddies together and paying these puppy mills a visit. Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi once said "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." What does the existance of these puppy mills say about us? Sorry I digress...

If the breeds are AKC recognized and the breeder advertises AKC registered puppies. AKC will be interested if dogs are constantly running together, especially if dogs of different breeds are housed together and the business also sells mixed breed puppies, for this may indicate that record keeping regulations are being violated.
AKC is a purebred registry and can deal only with record keeping and identification transgressions; they can suspend violators from further registration of purebred dogs, but they cannot prevent them from breeding and selling puppies. [More on the AKC]

If the dogs are UKC registered, contact: United Kennel Club

Popular UKC breeds that are not also AKC recognized are American Pit Bull Terrier, and Jack Russell Terrier.
Raising and selling dogs is a business for profit for many people. There should be no stigma attached to earning money by selling dogs; problems Adminse when the dogs are poorly bred, housed in poor conditions, denied proper medical care, are sick when sold, or are advertised falsely.

Im really sorry this is so long, Hope I didn't make a bad first impression..

Denise, this is what we need to do...

Have each states pulled up. Then the ones that are like you just described, hit them first with a letter writing and email campaign to their state legistlatures to add to their statutes that describes DOGS, using as an example a statute from a state with one as a good example.

We need to find out who from the board is from that state, who knows who, if someone knows a legislature that might be more "dog friendly", and work thru him. Start a campaign with all the dog clubs, humane shelters, and just plain news and publicity. Outsiders then can write the type of letters you mention about not doing business in their state, etc. because of this.

Somehow, we need to start somewhere. Even if it is one state that we know has bad/no laws, with loads of puppy millers, and start there. Bring in some celebrities, etc. for some "fund raiser", you know there are plenty of animal loving celebrities. If we just make a lot of noise and make ourselves known, and cause a change in ONE STATE....it would be so much easier to move into another state.

Anyone else have any ideas??

Yes, more info !

Love the names, I too am between bikes, tell Butch I firmly believe God wants us to have bikes and only tests the strongest of us, he will have his soon. My next one will have a side car for Darby (Michelle can follow in the car).
I would like more information about helping out in the Bulldog Underground. I am a Internet Facilitator and would love to organize a front online that could keep people informed and networked as to how to help abused/neglected Bullies. I'm a little afraid the house will soon be full of rescued bulldogs (we have a rescued lab mix named Misty and a rescued African Grey Parrot named Mia).
Please e-mail me more information. I am in the Los Angeles Area.
thank yu so much for the welcome. I am looking forwards to getting more info.
Tanner

each state has different laws and the unfortunate truth is

that is many states dogs are still considered property.....
but yes any abuse and cruelty should be reported....
but once again there are loop holes galore..and most of theses breed for profit have cover up operations..and sometimes the law either doesn't want to dig in that deep..it looks okay on the surface...or they don't have the man power ...'it's very complicated...sadly ....ce

There is always a way

The USDA or the AKC might not have jurisdiction, but there are also laws against cruelty to animals which are part of the criminal law. If the animals are being treated cruelly or neglected, at the very least the criminal law will apply, and you can report such people to your local animal control officers or even to the police.

HELLO!

That is a GREAT first impression!!!!! Sometimes things aren't that easy...I belong to a few groups who fight puppymills underground. Politically sometimes these people work around the laws...if you are intersted, I can email you details of a good example. Are you from the Pa area? Lancaster is a great example...what a mess they have there....

WElcome to the board! Bikers do cry. While my boyfriend Butch does not have a bike now (sold the Fat Boy- financial issues this year) he will soon someday again. Til then he just litters everything with Harley stickers, t-shirts, etc.

(I was signed up to take my riders course last year - but ended-up chickening out!)

AND - you will appreciate some of our dogs names -

Hello and welcome Tanner,Michelle and Darby Crash!

wonderful name...lol
and I can not wait to see pictures of your bullie hug mug...smile

Thank you for taking the time to research and post some very valuble information...

There are times in our lives that most of us , will come across these sellers for profit..or abuse cases ..and we are then put in the postion of ignoring it,protesting verbally ..or if we know where and how ...acting in this heartbeats best interest...
...so again thank you for some direction...
I can not speak to much about the behind the scenes happening with Cody...\but there is indeeed a team..that are working and have covered many many many of these bases and others..and then some ...
...blessings ..and thanks...ce

Sorry, Kris but it is mostly true

I pulled up the provision for cruelty to animals law in one state and it only pertained to livestock. No where did it address the issue of pets, breeding or conditions for breeding dogs. It was pretty sad.

oh come on

PLEASE.
I used to live in a state which didn't even require dogs to have outside shelter in the winter until the late 90s....
Are you going to tell me that they have animal cruelty laws there ANYWHERE?

Kris

welcome!!!n/m

mm

No need to be sorry!

W E L C O M E !! Tanner & Michelle and , of course Darby Crash! Love that name....I second the motion...bring on the pics. Your bullie is probably quite a character. We all invite info. Whether it applys or not we welcome opinions and spit out whatever doesn't make sense to us. No need to apologize otherwise we'd all be apologizing. Whether it's something serious or something all in good fun we are all EARS. And thanks to Webbie we stay in good line.

Thanks for the info Tanner

If them things haven't been done yet, I am sure they will be now.

I know a little bit...

but not much about what has been done to try and go after Cody's breeder. All the steps you mentioned I think have been followed, and more. Just a slow progress. Like I said, I dont know much about what has been done, but others here do and Im sure they will reply.

As far as being relatively new here, WELCOME! and when can we see pics of your baby?
