How much exercise should a Bully get?

I'm curious about how much exercise a healthy bulldog should get. I try to give Tuffy two short walks a day (around the neighborhood--maybe 15 minutes.) I give him water before and after but towards the end of a relatively short jaunt the poor guy is huffing and puffing. Am I overdoing it? Should I bring water along to give him once he starts panting?

Thanks!

LOL!

I'm sure Tuffy feels the same way...though he still has the naughty puppy in him and loves to chew up furniture. That's apparently enough exercise for him!

Depends on climate, weather, walking surface, dog's structure

Sanford can do long walks in the spring and fall and just 2 weeks ago we went on a 2 hour walk on the bike path near our house, but I would never be able to do that with him in the summer around here.

Tuffy is still a pup too, isn't he? It might just be that he gets tired because he hasn't fully developed yet. Just take it slow with him and watch him closely, you'll get pretty good at being able to read his signals of when he's tired or when he wants to keep going.

I take water along on walks here too..

you can find this neat thing at some petshops
it is a dish attached to a water bottle..it works great
I take water along with me all the time

I tend to excersise my dogs more in the backyard then on walks..
I have a huge yard for them to play in

we do the walks too

always water available for them if they need it

I don't give water before exercise

don't want to have the chance of bloat which can happen from food OR water.

I let him drink only after he's settled down after exercise or play. JMO

I would definitely bring water on your walks

I have a collapsable bowl that is very portable, but the ones that attach right to a water bottle look like they'd be better for walks.
Audrey runs around the house like a lunatic off and on all day, but i think the off and on is what keeps her from getting too overheated.
We live in NC and it gets HOT and humid in the summer, so we have to be so careful outside. She has her pool, which she LOVES, and we make sure she stays in it if we are outside during the hot parts of the day. She doesn't mind! We have to change the water 3 or 4 times a day because it gets way too hot.
We don't go for a lot of walks, we mostly play in the yard, but when we do she can walk for 30-45 minutes with no problems. (during cooler weather. I wouldn't take her in the heat, she likes to walk on the pavement and avoids the grass so it gets too hot)

i'd certainly watch the heat...

you dont want him to overheat, but the benefit of regular walks is large. Not only will you keep him from becoming much too fat (like a LOT of bulldogs i've seen - obesity takes YEARS off a dogs life!) but if you keep him exercised you'll keep him happy and more balanced. And unbalanced dog, no matter how physically healthy they are is NOT a happy dog at all! I'd say keep water with you at all times, and if hes struggling, give him a break happy.gif We walk with remi about an hour a day at least in the summer, usually later at night when the suns not as high in the sky and we always bring water or go someplace where he can be IN the water. Keep him hydrated and be sure to wet his feet and belly too, thats where they sweat happy.gif there paw pads.

Climate is definitely a factor

and your Bulldog's temperament too. Kirby goes to day care twice a week and I take him for a 30-plus minute walk the rest of the time, weather permitting. As long as you're monitoring him for heat exhaustion you're okay.

It depends on the climate one is in, and the temperature and...

humidity levels.

If the weather isn't dangerous, Jeeves and Angel get 2-3 hours of exercise. They get taken out 2 times per day at the park, and then go pee in our yard when they need to. Angel is 6, and Jeeves is 9 and is unusually active for his age. Jeeves has been lucky, fortunately, very healthy and doesn't have any orthopedic issues yet.

When it is warm, we take them out to the pond with a children's life vest and we go in the water with them to keep them safe. They go right from the air-conditioned car and right into the water. When the concrete is too hot, I transport them from point a to point b in baby carriages, so they don't overheat.

When we go to Nova Scotia during the summer time, they do better in that climate than they do in when it is warm and humid in New England.

I notice that Jeeves and Angel definitely have more energy and stanima in the cooler winter months.

I always carry water for when they need to be hydrated, and make them take a break when they are too out of breath.

Watch his hips...

never mind so much about the panting...on a young BULLDOG, you can do some damage if you take them too much. That is just my opinion.
