today i did something so wrong, but i assure you it was a complete accident. me and my bella were playing fetch in the house with a tennis ball. i throw it down the hall and she runs full speed after it. well i had to get it out from one of the rooms, i was walking back with the ball in hand and i didnt hear her behind me. im walking and i just toss the ball bachwards from my hand. all of a sudden i hear bella crying her head off. it suddenly hit me, she came up suddenly behind me and i accidentally hit her in the eye with the tennis ball. i felt so bad. her eye was all watery and red. now she is terrified of the ball and she now has a little complex towards me.i think she is a little afraid of me. i never spanked her but now since i accidentally hit her she seems terrified of me. how do i get her to normal. i tried everything from giving her some chicken to giving lots of love. is it something i should just keep doing and over time she will get over it. it seemed to really bother her.
I bet she will forget in no time!
Just put away the tennis ball for a while and you stay calm and loving towards her. She will remember that you are a wonderful source of love and food.
Cathy
when she first came home
had something similar with Bella and my son here..
he was out playing with her and the teaser ball..she came at him on an odd angle and he hit her in the head with the ball. she bit her lip. she would not go near him at all..she was petrified of the ball and him. YET with me ..she still played with the same ball..
it takes a hundred times for a bulldog to forget this type of experience..that came from the vet.. take it slow and build some trust.
I would start with simple things like get on the floor with her and add some treats.
that is what we did with Bella here.
Bryan had to restablish trust.
it worked but it was a very slow process
NOW SHE IS FINE ..she runs out to play with him outside but it did not happen overnight..
he used the best treats he could find and slowly worked with her
you can also try to play fetch with her outside..instead of inside the house.. change the enviroment.
goodluck..they get over it..but it takes time
Bryan was a complete accident with Bella here too
dogs do not understand ..which is too bad.
but accidents do happen..do not beat yourself up over it..
Does she seem to be in pain?
I understand her eye being watery and a bit red, but does the eyeball seem swollen? Would you be able to get a good look at her face, to compare one eye to the other? If this injury just occurred within the last 24hrs, you might consider giving her one aspirin (not any other pain reliever, just coated aspirin) which might help with pain and swelling (altho increased pressure within the eye is by itself very serious and should be seen by your vet or ER tomorrow morning.
As for her being unsure of you, time and patience are key. Put away the ball for a while, and just try giving her treats in your outstretched open hand, and speak in a nice gentle voice...do this for a few days and then she may be willing to accept some tummy rubs or something 'more intimate' in the way of touching/petting, but don't rush it...and don't give up either.
brooke
accidents happen. she is reacting to you also. how old is she? i would just try and be as calm as possible, don't 'ask' her to play with the ball. just chill for a bit. sit on the floor with her. let her come to you...is her eye ok? i would get it checked just to be sure. i am sure others will have some better advice, but as hard as it is, just let things relax and don't dote over her.
good luck and hugs to you both.
