Help

I have not been on here in some time but my dog Winston (Bulldogworld calander cover boy a few years ago, lol) who is going to be 5 had been peeing and I have noticed blood in his pea on friday night and he has been tired more so than normal. Brought him to the vet on sat morning and they said he had a bladder infection. They gave him clavamox and took a urine sample. It came back today and he has crystals in his urine. He comes from very very good blood lines and they said it can be an inherited trate. I let my breeder know (She is the best breeder in the world) none of her other dogs she has known of have had this issue. Anyways they say that I must bring him in tomorrow to have x-rays and blood work done. Xrays to make sure there are no stones in his kidneys or bladder and the blood work is just a precautionary thing to check everything. I have been told I am going to have to give him special food but the kicker is he has an allergy to wheat and grain. So it should be very interesting.

If anyone has had any issues or knows anything about this please do tell. I worry easy and this dog is so important to me as yours are to you. I was told it is not kidney disease. I just always think the worse when something like this happens.

No, she just had uti's all the time...

the cranberry helped that.

Belle has crystals in her urine..

vet put her on c/d and her ears flared up, so we put her back on her regular food and she takes Methio-Form (urine acidifier) 3x's a day.

There were no symptoms. We found the problem when she had her senior checkup. No blood in urine and xrays showed no stones yet. Just had urine checked last week to see how she's doing. Acting fine and doesn't seem to have any pain or urgency to go.

If stones develop, she will have surgery to remove them.

urethrostomy is surgery that reroutes the plumbing of males

similar to a female so the stones don't get hung up/stuck at the os penis.

To those who understand no explanation is needed. To those who don't no explanation is possible.

i give mine

human cranberry pills from walmart. not sure of the proper dosage- i just give her one pill unless i notice something wrong. i don't think you can od on cranberry. it's worth a try before you change foods.

By the way

We tried cranberry caplets and they totally upset Stella's tummy. So, not an answer for us.

Stella had chronic bladder infections and crystals

For the first five years of her life, or so, she had four or five bladder infections a year. Antibiotics would take care of them but they'd always be back. My bulldog vet commented "Look at the outside of a bulldog - and you can imagine what it looks like inside!". His point was that she probably had a little curve or dip in her urinary tract that collected urine and that it would eventually prompt an infection.

She also had crystals in her urine a few times, although luckily, no stones.

Stella has been on Royal Canine urinary SO13 special food for dogs with these issues for about five or six years. She hasn't had an infection since! Couldn't tell you what's in it though... might be a problem with Winston's food allergies. I have heard that cranberry helps, so you might want to see with a natural dog products store what they might recommend if the SO13 doesn't work.

Best of luck!

Sal had surgery twice because of this, we had him on

c/d food from the vet for a couple of years, then switched him over to TOTW.We also had him neuterd and thank god no problems for the last 2 years.
The vet said that the only way to prevent this if it happened again would be to turn him into a girl. (don't remember the actual term).

Before you give anything

Please check with your vet. Cranberry caps and Vit C will both acidify the urine. Cystine crystals form in an acidic environment. From what I've read, this is a genetic condition, and your dog will probably have to go on some type of specialized diet. If the U/D formula contains allergans, perhaps your vet could recommend something else to supplement the food you're currently feeding? You may also want to consult a nutritionist.

Mine have crystals too

JAckson and Maddox, but both had UTI too. Give the cranberry pills worked for mine. It also depends on how long the urine sat before being tested. crystals can form from the time you get a urine sample and when it is actually tested.

Re: You can buy cranberry capsules at Costco...

did your pup have the same type of crystals? Cystine?

You can buy cranberry capsules at Costco...

I believe they are 300 mg, I used to give my girl one a day for prevention, I'm sure you could give two with no problem.

actually

Someone else mentioned this to me. Is there a certain amount you give depening on the weight? How much do they cost and where do I get them?

becky's picture

not sure if this

will help, but my pearl used to get uti's a lot & had crystals in her urine, too. i started giving her cranberry pills daily & she hasn't had one since. if i ever notice her going more than usual, i just give her an extra or two & she's good. don't know if it will work for all dogs, but thought i'd share. good luck!

They are

Crystine Crystals.

Did the vet mention

What type of crystals? Q had recurrent struvite crystals that formed because he kept getting prostatitis. This lead to a UTI which raised his urine ph (as high as 8!) and that allowed the crystals to form. Once I had him neutered, it fixed the problem. I had to wait a few months for his surgery, and I kept the urine ph down (and prevented further crystal formation) by giving him methioform tabs.
Hope this helps.
