Hello everyone, I have a concern about my Lola and was hoping for opinions..

my Lola just turned 4 in January and recently I've noticed that when I rub her back, I can feel almost all of her spine, is that a sign of aging? My Chuckie supposedly is her same age, according to the people that I adopted him from, and his back doesn't feel the same as hers, is it maybe a female thing? It makes me sad to think that she is aging already, 4 years old doesn't seem old, is it maybe just poor breeding? I'm just curious and hoping for some answers from experience bully owners, thanks for taking the time to read, and for sharing your knowledge, Evelyn

Hey Evelyn....

I really don't have advice, but I wanted to let you know that I am in the same boat. I was assuming it was Kimmie's age, because this has happened to both my first bully Mugzy, and to Tillie in their last years... and it was making me very sad. Camilla will be 10 this year, and it is getting me worried.

However, after reading the responses here, I think it must be the food change with her!

A number of months ago, we changed Camilla's food. I changed it back to what she was eating when she first joined our family. She had been eating Iams weight management with her former owners, but we had changed that. Then came a couple of years dealing with staph infections and utis. I realized that when she came to us, her skin and coat had looked beautiful, and maybe she would do well on it again. And she was a little chubby. Changing the food did the trick with her skin, she hasn't had a nasty scabby staff infection since, and her coat looks great.

Camilla has a very large ribcage, so she always looks round, never skinny. But I have been feeling her spine, and assuming that it was due to the fact she is getting up there. But now that I think about it, it has to be the weight management food. I am going to weigh her today and see what she is. She was 45 pounds a few months ago. (She's a lot smaller in person than she appears in pictures, lol. Everyone is always surprised to actually meet her after seeing her pictures first! happy.gif )

Anyway, I'm glad you brought this up, I was going to do the same. I need to look into it further myself!

Hi Kim, we had a food change when she had the UTI & crystals, bu

a 60 pounder, thanks

Lola

Hi Evelyn,

By any chance, have you changed her food? Just throwing this out there because when I changed food to a fish and potato, my Wilbur lost weight like crazy-where you could feel his spine and start to see his ribs. He was eating the same amount of food he always did, and Gretta and Jenna (German Shepherd) did not lose any weight. He was totally healthy-it just seemed as if his body was not utilizing the food. When I switched to a non fish based food, he gained the weight back.

I hope everything is ok with your Lola.

It could be

She may have worms? Have you had a stool sample tested lately? Just a thought. Otherwise, it could just be her conformation:-)

That sounds unusual to me

I have a seven year old and a five year old female and they still seem very young and their spine or ribs are definitely not sticking out. Has she been checked for worms?

I have not seen that wtih my Sophia and she just turned 4 in Jan

Have you checked her weight lately? She may need to be fed a little more to put a little weight on? I generally only see that raised spine in very old dogs or underfed ones. Not saying you aren't feeding her!!! Just that you may want to increase the amount a little to fill her in some??

Also, if it is just recently she has developed this, it may be worth a trip to your vet to check her out. Just in case:-)

Is she skinny everywhere else?

If so, maybe she has a thyroid issue, which could be checked and controlled.

Otherwise, if she's nice and "bully round", she could just have a more prominent spine. Just another bully body quirk.
