I feel like a nervous first time mama leaving my baby for the first time.... We're flying to FL in April and my hubby said no way to bringing the Tuffster (he thinks flying with three human kids is torture enough. LOL!) In any event, we are looking into petsitting/boarding options and I'm considering the Petsmart Pet Hotel. The setup looks great and I like that he won't be confined to a crate or on a run. If anyone has had any experience with the Petsmart hotel, good or bad, I'd love to hear it!
Thanks!

Yes...good tip Judy...I had Vicky L
come visit the dogs while we were gone.
Be careful.....Make sure they DO NOT put
him in the drying crate. That could kill him. And if you can do his nails without any trouble I would not let them do his nails.
here is a suggestion....
no matter where tuffy goes or where you board him...find a neighbor or relative or friend to visit him where ever he is...to make sure every thing is ok....let the place know people will be coming to check up on him...at different times....
bulldogs are a bit different than most dogs and need that little extra care...
Kim. Bella goes to doggie daycare at Petsmart everyday, I would
100% trust in them.. b.c. they are corporate it seems safer than the private places, atleast from my exp..
Hope everyone has a great day
Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!
I think since Tuffy is still a puppy the safest place may be at the vet whom I trust implicitly (he did the cherry eye surgery and has a lot of knowledge about bulldogs.) I least there I know he will be well taken care of and will only be at the crate at night. But I am meeting with a pet sitter this weekend to see if it's a good fit....

Glad you found a good one!
It sounds like it's all contingent on the Petsmart. Some are better than others apparently! Would you board Bella there for more than the day? On the website suggests trying the Doggy Day Care before trying boarding so that's always an option I might try.

Yes, it's only available in some areas.
If you type in Stamford for store locator it'll show you the pethotel...they even offer a video tour of the facilities. It's pretty entertaining!

I also don't want Tuffy in a crate all day
I think he'd get depressed from the isolation. He's used to constant human companionship...

It's crazy what some people try to get away with charging!!

Thanks for the endorsement
I see they offer a grooming after the Pet Hotel stint as an add on so that might solve the smelly problem!

That crossed my mind Gary
But if you are worried, get a desk that has locking files and lock them up. We didn't lock the files, but after meeting and interviewing the sitter I wasn't concerned.
I called her from the airport in LA and I worried for the first couple of days but the texts and photos really helped. I would hire her again in a second.
Like Ela1ne mentioned, this is her livelyhood and it is importnat to keep her clients happy. Shoe wouldn't be in business very long if she was ripping people off. I did a google search on her as well as a BBB seach and nothing came up. Since she is also a licensed trainer and behaviorist I confirmed her palces where she taught classes.
You can do some snooping and check referrals.
omgosh...thats a lot of cash ....sheesh.... im already scared fo
have to board all 5 lol

hubby and i dont like anyone in our house when we are not around
i am sure someone would love to steal..... and evem for tje snooping around...the thought would drive me insane ! i dont like people touching my stuff.... lol im crazy like that.
pet sitter would also not work here cause that would mean bruce and jackie would have to stay in theyre crate all day until the petsitter comes and then back in the crate when that person leaves.... i crate them even when we are just going to dinner or the supermarket.... to freked out they might get into something while im not there.

not every petsmart has the hotel ... its a big room with mutiple
glas door...some even have a tv lol..... so the dogs are not kept in crates .. they also have 2 different play rooms (to sepperate size) and a doggy potty walk

Do you ever worry, tho, that the sitter might be a snoop and wil
not to steal anything, but to do nosy things like look at your bank statements, credit card statements, in your medicine cabinet, etc.? I'm always a bit uneasy about anyone being in my house when I'm not home.
Your sitter's price is fantastic, tho. I wish I could find someone like that where I live.

Gary,,,just FYI
my dogsitter used to come to my home twice a day (2 30-min visits)and I paid $20 for each visit plus $1 additional for each additional dog. She doesn't charge any extra to give pills or pickup mail/papers, do a walk-thru to check for leaks or noises...and this IS Southern California where costs are often higher than other areas. BTW my sitter is bonded and experienced and this is how she earns her living, so reputation and satisfaction really matter.
I was recently billed $154 for a day and a half of boarding
of course, it was for 4 dogs. But I still know what you mean about not paying for more than what a person pays for a hotel room. I was in shock when I got the bill. Geez, it was only one night. I could have rented not one, but two, hotel rooms for that price. Next time, I will look for someone who will come spend the night at my house.

Are the pets boarded in the store overnight??
I've never heard of Pethotel. We have three Petsmarts in our area and I've never seen any boarding type facilities in any of them (other than where the cats up for adoption are kept), nor any info in the store mentioning a Pethotel. I wonder if it's only available in certain parts of the country.

This is great, Deb!
THe situation you described is what I'm looking for. But I'm fine with him being in someone's home too as long as the situation is safe and comfortable. You gave me a good guideline to use for when I look for a pet sitter! My main criteria is to find someone who has some experience petsitting our bulldog. There is also a manager of our local petstore who is very experienced with bulldogs (albeit a bit eccentric) but I might give her a call. Her heart is in the right place!
bruce has stayed at petsmarts hotel a couple of times...as amatt
will stay for the day next week thursday while hubby and i are driving to ca to pick up one of the new pups . i like the daycare playtime and that they have theyre own room -no cage. the staff was very nice and loved bruce..the only "negative" thing was that he was pretty smelly afterwards lol but i guess thats normal after a day of playing with other dogs.... i simply book a grooming appointement for the end of the day when i come to pick them up and they will be fresh and clean and ready to come home !
only good experience and the price is right ! i refuse to pay more for the dogs boarding then what my own hotel room will cost (usua;ly around $50-60)

That seems expensive
especially in her home.
I paid $55 for 2 dogs for the sitter to come to our house. She is licensed and bonded. She spent the night, was there from 7pm until 8 am and then came for an hour mid day. The dogs got 3 walks a day. She also came early at 4 pm a couple of evenings and stayed. She sent several texts with pictures to make us feel comfortable. I'm in Seattle and I found the average overnight to be around $55-$65, but there is alot of competition here.
Thanks for the feedback, Deb. Question about pet sitter...
It's very helpful! We have been in contact with our vet. They do board and take dogs on walks, etc. I also have a call into a pet sitter/dog trainer who is willing to take Tuffy into her home but she's charging like $75 a day. Does that seem reasonable...?
Personally
I would try to fine a more home like environment for boarding. Have you asked your vet for suggestions? Have you thought about a home pet sitter? Some times the vet techs will do home sitting. Do you have a local bulldog club you could ask the members for referrals?
Our Petsmart employees some pretty ignorant people I would never trust to take care of my dogs. Alot of the staff are young people who don't really understand the responsibilty of taking care of these wonderful dogs. If you have a personal relationship with the staff then you may feel comfortable with them. But I would try to find a more mom and pop business to take care of him.
Scary reviews I found online about Petsmart
I found this review forum on Petsmart employees/Petshotel and it pretty much cemented my decision to look elsewhere. If anyone is interested in reading some reviews... here is the link. FYI... some of these stories are rather disturbing...
