So i took my cocker Danny in for his first grooming today since i adopted him last week. While there we were discussing what to do with Danny's tail since it's not cropped like most Cockers are. Since he's not a perfect example of the breed standard i decided to have a little fun with his grooming and do a English Setter tail on him i guess its called a "Flag". After talking about this the groomer behind the counter said that eventually Danny's tail would be the norm for cockers and any dog with a docked tail. I asked why and she said that AKC was discontinuing cropped ears, dockers tails, dew claw removal ect...Is this correct? I almost couldnt believe it. Then i asked why she said because its considered cruel nowa days. I asked about non-surgical modifications like glueing ears or taping them and she had no idea you could do that. I'm thinking this girl didnt know what she was talking about but correct me if i'm wrong BDW'ers... Thanks.
I'm sure it will eventually come to that
I believe in Europe they have already discontinued cropping and docking.
No more cropping of ears and tails in Europe
Earcropping is illegal in the Netherlands since the nineties. Dogs with cropped ears can't be shown, compete, nothing. Only breeding is allowed, as there are some countries, like Poland, the USA that don't have a cropping ban.
Since about 12 years cropping of tails is illegal too. Cropped dogs can't compete and show too.
I must say, it is very nice to see Boxers, Rottweilers, Dobermann, Spaniels, Terriers with tails and ears! Just after the ban some breeds showed awfull tails, but this is fastly improving through selection and - I think - importing.
Some breeds, especially the more "mean"looking breeds have declined in numbers, but I wonder if these people loved the dog, or his looks?
Ineke and Zorro
It is the same no docking tails in Europe for
weimaraners and vizslas too.
Here in Canada
It has already been banned in the maritime provinces... breeders will now either have to do those procedures themselves or travel to the US or Que. ON to get it done. Very unfortunate if you ask me. I believe people should have the right to a choice as well as the vets doing the procedures.
They have discontinued removal of dew claws on dogs but not de-clawing cats! Doesn't make much sense to me! JMHO

From what I understand the AKC DOES NOT want this
practice to become illegal...

I hope it is outlawed here...it certainly seems
cruel to me. Those surgeries have to painful.
hmmm
not sure, I do know some vets here refuse to do ears. that is pretty painful. Dewclaws alot of times up here need to be removed, which is at about 2 to 3 days old so the cartalidge hasnt formed. The reason is, the deep snow and ice , alot of times they get ripped off, specially for hunting dogs. Also our holistic vet does tail banding, not cutting, which is not painful except for the pinch of putting it on. But as far as the ears go, alot of vets will not do it here. The healing time and trying to keep the ears up , putting tampons, or padded sticks in them can be quite long.
Interesting guys...
I really don't care either way, i do think more humane ways of modifying like taping or gluing should be done over surgery but thats just my opinion. My new Cocker Danny has a tail and i think he's adorabale with it. I guess time will tell if the USA follows suit with Europe and Australia.
