Car restraints

I know we've discussed this before, but someone asked for a recommendation, and now I am wondering if Audrey's is safe enough. She has the Easy Rider harness that you put the seatbelt through. She can sit up and move a bit, and I wonder if it allows too much movement? I don't want to put a crate in my car and try to find a safe way to secure it, and I have heard conflicing information on the safety of crates anyways. I've heard of dogs in crates being tossed around inside them and injured, and of course a loose crate is just a HUGE projectile in a vehicle. There are a few car harnesses available that all claim to be the best, so does anyone have any experience with one other than the easy rider?
And, Audrey HATES wearing it. We change her out of it before we take her out of the car and put it back on her when it's time to leave again. It's like having a baby in a car seat again!

No, it was so long ago!

I got it probably 8 years ago or more. It has a tag Travelin' Dog, maybe google?

you need to get a hook for the latch system

that is there for infant car seats. Even when it's released, you still have to physically manuever it out.

I am thinking of trying this

http://www.hunterk9.com/site/870877/product/98900

I like how it spreads the shock absorbing part out over the broadest part of the chest, and the way it clips into the seat belt. I also like the fact that it is crash safety tested to the same standards as a child safety belt.

We use a harness for walking Audrey also, and we just got her a buddy belt which I LOVE, but I am worried about too much pressure on one spot.

There is one more that has been crash tested to child belt standards, and it has some elasticity to it to reduce broken ribs, but I don't like the idea of the impact of all her weight being absorbed by thinner straps.

I don't know which one is better!

We've got the Easy Rider

and Mr. Houdini figured out how to step on the seatbelt release button. So it's no good for us only used as a harness now. LOL

I just ordered this...

http://www.amazon.com/Car-Control-Strap-15-20-Color/dp/B000OGNJS0/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1270561252&sr=1-12

You put it through the hook on their regular harness (Ajax wears a harness for walks, etc.) and secure it to the seat belt. We haven't used it yet, but I am hoping it will help keep him safe.

Wonderful!

Do you remember where you got it? I like the padded straps with our hefty dogs as it gives it a nicer cushion happy.gif

Thanks for posting this...

I was so saddened to read about Cleo. Such a shock. Betty doesn't use a harness and I can't fit a crate in my car or pickup, so she's always riding commando.

I just remembered that I have a seatbelt for Raven in my shed, made by Travelin' Dog. I just dug it out, he was 120#, but I reduced the adjustments as small as they go, and I'm going to do some sewing and stitch the chest sheepskin even smaller and it will fit!!

I will stitch the "V" part in the front so that it is snugger on her.

We are going on a camping trip with a day's drive to Oregon each way in two weeks, I will feel much better!
