I have just been admiring pictures of beautiful bulldogs sleeping in human beds. My question is this: How do they access the beds? My bed is way too tall for any bulldog to climb;-(

and lay it on the floor right alongside the open side of your bed. That way, if Betty falls off, she would be well cushioned. Or, check Craigslist for a mattress for a child's twin bed or Day bed. They typically sell brand new for about $90 so you could probably find a used one for $30 or so.

her water dish, then a few hours later she wanted more and I knew she was going to have to pee after that other long drink so brought her out.. but we do that sometimes bring her water to the bed.. LOL..
My bed is antique and very tall, 31", I just measured it. Basically it is hip high on me. And I have laminate floors on a slab foundation, no cushion around it.
Betty was not allowed in the bed because Raven was here many years before her and he slept there. I didn't need a dog fight on my head, she would try to bully him and growl, she lost her priveledge. No worries, she cannot get up there without me picking her up.
But after Raven died, I simply cannot sleep alone and Betty has earned her right for the first time in her life to cuddle at night. So, I started bringing her to bed and we both love it. The bed it up against a wall, and the headboard and footboard are tall, so she can only exit along the side. I put her on the wall side so that she would have to climb over me and wake me up. Which she never does. She's sawing logs the whole time.
But, even so, I take all my fancy pillows at bed time and throw them on the floor along the edge, "just in case"! I'm afraid she'd break her neck if she jumped out. I could never deal with that. I consider telling her she can't sleep there any longer due to the risk, but I just can't deny her and it seems the risk is very low and I think I'm being oversensitive having just lost Raven.
I got her the little carpeted stairs, but they were a failure. She doesn't want to use them and looks at them as if they are in her way and tried to jump OVER them to get on and off the couch. So, the little stairs are now in the RV for when we go camping.
Maybe some bigger stairs that she cannot jump over would force her to use them, but they are upwards of $200 and I just can't afford them.

because Chester, the nutcase was jumping and not using the stairs (he is just a bit less smart) so now we sleep Japanese style...it's another of those ...what do we do for our bullies... frankly, these days, because of Lily taking lasixs, one of us sleeps by the door in the living room so she has access to outside at night. it's OK, we love them.

Served in bed, what a spoiled brat she is! She likes to play before she falls asleep, and she was panting, so Eric put her on the floor and she just looked at him like he had lost his mind and put her paws right back up to be put on the bed again. So he brought her bowl to her and she drank and slobbered away. Little booger!

jumping up was never a problem, tho it probably does strain the tendons and ligaments a lot. But the biggest danger is jumping down.

They are plastic, but the surface area of the steps is carpeted. He can jump on and off of the bed, but we use the steps so that he (hopefully) doesn't get hurt.

since then, I have never been without a carpeted pet stairs next to my bed. Be wary of non-carpeted pet stairs because the surface may be very slippery for your bulldog. Like you, my bed is very tall. My first bulldog jumped off and tore her ACL really bad, which led to her death a few days later. After she passed away, I first tried wooded pet stairs. The wood surface was so slippery that my other dogs would not use it. Then I discovered a web site at www.petclassics.com that sells numerous different kinds of pet stairs and ramps, including carpeted models. I now have the 3-step model, but I had it made with somewhat wider and deeper treads (i.e., the part you step on). My dogs not only love to go up and down it, but with the extra width to the treads, they also love to lay on the top step. If you get a pet stairs from another seller, tho, be careful about the height of the risers. If the risers are too high, that also will scare your dog as he or she comes down.
Here is the link to the site I mentioned, and the three step, carpeted model (they will also custom make them to different dimensions if you request; Michelle from this board had that done):
Stairs like these can literally be a life saver for your bulldog.

people with dogs, that is. If my dogs would not use the pet stairs, I would definitely do what you did and put my box frame directly on the floor. I wonder why using a bed frame became a regular thing, even for people without dogs. Wonder if it was for health reasons, or maybe a box frame breaks apart faster over time without a bed frame.

My main concern is the bullies falling off a very high bed, so these postings are very helpful:-)
Thank you very much!!

If you're going to purchase some IMO Gary's and Zaps are the best. Less steep then these and carpeted is really nice.
