Bobo's WBC

I would post this on the health forum but I think I might get more help here. Took Bobo to the vet this morning because he seems to have a phlegm, hacking, snot, than usual, I also wanted to take him back to see about getting him off the pred. She thought his lungs sounded clear but said it was hard to get a good listen because of his snorting and stuff so she took some blood. His WBC is elevated at 32 (normal is 15 to 17). She wants him to take an antibiotic for 10 days (shoot, I forgot the kind and it's at home now) and to stay on the pred until he is done with the antibiotics in case there is some inflammation. After that we will talk about getting him off the pred. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

On a good note, Bobo got to come to work with me this morning and gets lots of attention as well as pass gas in my office. happy.gif

I like Dawn's post

and I agree about the Pred being immuno-suppressive. Remember that you cannot stop pred "cold" and must withdraw from it gradually, usually over a week's time, so don't do any changes without consultation with your vet. happy.gif

Sounds like he may have a URI

Please refresh my memory, why is he on pred?

Sounds like he may have allergies

Upper Respiratory Infection

I agree with this. Probably got a little bug or bacteria... Isn't the pred immuno-suppressive? This is exactly what happened with my cat Cowboy last week. He is on cyclosporine for life for asthma/allergies. It suppresses the immune system. So, when he got an URI, I went straight to the vet and they prescribed antibiotics. Because he can't fight it like a normal system can, it can quickly turn to pneumonia (has in the past with him). At first they prescribed clavamox, which did nothing after 10 days. Then another vet at the clinic said that abx used to work well about 10 years ago, but the bugs are becoming resistant now. So we went to the big guns: zithromax. It's the antibiotic that people with bronchitis/pneumonia get. Short 3-5 day acting. He got better the next day, very clearly worked.

I hope Bobo gets better soon!

Re: Sounds like he may have a URI

He had many, many issues when I got him - demo mange, toe cysts, hernia, but mostly a really severe staff infection fromt he mange. She put him on antibiotics and prednisone and he is so much better. I have been weaning him off the pred, he is now on 1/2 tab every other day )I think that's 10 mgs., and I would like to try to get him off of it completely. The vet thinks, and so do I, that he is going to have some chronic skin issues.
