I was out with the dogs and noticed drops of blood on the cement. First I checked my own head because a shingle cut my head open yesterday but it was not me (great days I am having lately) Next I checked all the dogs paws and still nothing. I then noticed some blood on the end of Diesel's penis. Is this a UTI infection? I tried to do a search and people noticed blood in the urine but this seems extreme. Does this require a urine sample? I will be calling my vet also. I would appreciate any info I can get at this point though. Thanks gang!
Re: Blood dripping from penis...
I am no expert by any means but it could be and infection. This can happen in people why not animals too? Let us know. How is your head?
Hope both of you are okay
Been thinking about you...
..Sorry to hear about your wound, scalp vs. shingle, OUCH!!! And what's this with a bleeding penis..?? OUCH again!!!
Hope all goes well with you and Diesel this weekend. For some reason I thought it was last weekend.. Let me know as soon as you know the results..
Hope you both are feeling better soon!
I hope Diesel is ok
I don't have an answer but a urine sample might help. Good luck.
Thanks Kelly...
You know what women are like about their hair!LOL At 37 yrs old it's the only thing I got left! Thanks for your concern but I will live. I can't afford infection of the brain, I can't remember anything now!LOL
I could only wish to have that success....
Thank you for giving me the info about Grady. I will make sure I have something with me in the ring just in case he has a recurrence. I am hoping it is minor but it sure was scary when it happened. I made an appt with the vet and went straight to the board!LOL I knew someone would have some answers for me. I will be the only rookie in the ring on the weekend. I am up against specials all three days:( I just want to have a good time. I know he can do it, its me that needs the time in the ring.LOL
I just want the black cloud to go AWAY and have blue ribbons instead!
Cindy-
When they mean shave your head they mean just a little bit so they can get the thread or staples through your skin without hair. My girlfriend cracked her head open in November and I sat in the ER with her all night and watched them shave her head and put in the staples-you wouldn't even be able to tell they removed some of your hair-I would guess they shaved about a millimeter on either side of her gash! If it continues to bleed and split open you really should get it checked out! Also-you want the ER people to clean it out for you-ya never know whats on that shingle!!
Take care of yourself!
KB
Good luck!
If the bleeding isn't too bad, you could still try showing. Although, it is definitely frustrating! Grady always seems to have a recurrence when we have a show. I've had it happen twice at the show.

Once, he was dripping slightly, but I was able to keep it under control. I put a few baby wipes in my pocket, then kept dabbing blood from his penis while the judge wasn't watching. He managed to take Best of Winners that day.
The second time was last November. The puppy classes had started, and we were in the Open class. Suddenly, he started dripping blood very badly. I rolled him on his back, and he had a huge erection. Using some towels, I applied some pressure to his penis, and he calmed down within a few minutes. I quickly wiped off the remaining blood with some baby wipes, and got into the ring just in time for our class (they were actually calling my number). He didn't bleed any more once we were in the ring. Grady took Best of Winners and Best of Breed that day over three champions.
Hope your shows this weekend are less frustrating, but just as successful!
Search the Medical Board...
Liz is right, I did post some info a few weeks ago on the Medical Board. I've been living this problem with Grady for the past year and a half, and he still has some very minor recurrences occasionally. If you can't find the info on the Medical Board, let me know. I can re-post it here, then answer any questions you may have. I also have a great article regarding a new surgical technique for correction if necessary. For now, if you've only seen a few drops of blood, it's not too serious. Of course, at this point, we haven't even confirmed that it is indeed a prolapsed urethra....
Oh, I wish I had known that...
my head probably could have used a couple of stitches. It sounds like horse hooves do a lot more damage than a cedar shingle!WOW!
I was petrified of walking around the ring with my dog and a bald patch on my head!LOL It was traumatizing just thinking about it:)
Sorry to hear about your mishap. Sounds extremely painful.
Next time I figure I will just keep my helmet on!
They don't shave your head
Just for future reference, I had my head ripped open by a horse's hoof clear to the bone. It cut through layers of skin. They stitched the first layer and stapled the second, so it looked like I had a giant zipper on my head. But you could only see it if I parted my hair. I guess they realize people don't like to get their heads shaved and won't do it unless it is absolutely necessary. Like a life and death emergency. Anyway, I hope your head feels better.
Thanks...
I got more info when I put "prolapsed urethra" in the search. I have an appt with the vet tomorrow morning first thing. I read the thread from Melanie on this subject and it sure seems like the same symptoms but before I go sticking the tube of Panalog inside his penis I will wait to see what the vet says. YUCK!!
Anyway, we have our first show this weekend and I am concerned this might act up in the ring. Not sure what would happen and I would hate to be dismissed. I will have to run that by the vet also. Thank for your help once again!
My head is fine...
thanks for asking. It was the nicest day in Southern Ontario yet! Went for my first motorcycle ride for the season and stopped in at an outdoor patio. I wasn't even wo sips into my drink and one of the cedar shingles came off the roof and hit me on the head. We were all laughing until the blood started pouring down my face. I joked with the manager that I I didn't know I was supposed to keep my helmet on while on his patio. I refused to go get stitches because I am in my first dog show this weekend and someone said something about shaving the hair on my head in order to stitch. I applied pressure for four hours! There was no way someone was going to shave my head. I look like hell today because I am afraid to wash my hair!LOL I am really fine. More embarassed than hurt. Nothing a couple of aspirins can't handle.
The bummer is now Diesel is bleeding. Not sure how serious this is but I am sure he is not supposed to bleed while going around the ring! When it rains it pours! Keep your fingers crossed for us and hope we make it to the show all in one piece.
prolapsed urethra?
melanie has lots of info on this...do a search, she posted before a few weeks ago.
