Bella is on predisone for 16 days due to her hemotoma in her ear. I have tried all kinds of ideas but she managed to spit out all her meds in the past.
this time I bought some bratwurst sausage..and cut them up and tucked a pill in a piece of sausage..gave her a piece to fool her and then a piece with the pill and then another one to fool her and another one with a pill. she needs to take 4 of these pills for the first while and then she is slowly wheened off them.
any other ideas out there for pills??
the vet said yesterday it is usually the dogs that chew there food that are the hardest to give pills too..and Bella does that..one piece of dog food at a time..she savours her dinner...lol. Gus just swallows his meals. Gus is easy to give meds too...where Bella is a true chore for meds.
Hotdog...specifically, Turkey Dogs.
I cut them up and keep them in fridge. Everybody gets one piece in the morning and one at night. Then when I do have to give them pills, they never suspect because they are used to getting it twice a day. And since Sadie takes pills morning and night, I'd have to do it for one everyday anyway. All three are on pills right now, but no one suspects. LOL

Cheese, Salami, ground beef is what works for us
nm
pillpockets work pretty well here or raw ground beef if non of t
pill in theire mouth as far back as possible and hold the snot up until its swollowed down ...not the nicest way but the meds need to get in
huggs and sloppy kisses
jenny and bruce
LOL They only get cheese to give pills..
just a tiny bite. Usually I use the boxed Velveeta. It's the easiest to mold around a pill. I switched to the Brie for Belle because she turned her nose up at the Velveeta and Brie was in the fridge.

Brie - I hope I'm reincarnated as one of your dogs!
M&G love cheese so much. I thought I was spoiling them with Tillamook Cheddar. I hope they never find out that your babies get Brie.
"1,2,3" method..
My Belle has become tougher to get pills down. She's got some big chewable ones she has to take three times a day and she doesn't like them. I buried them in canned i/d and gave them very quickly this AM, so she didn't have a chance to search out the pill.
She was eating them in cream cheese, but she decided she didn't like that anymore. Then I tried Brie and she was okay with that until today. She took them in i/d today, but I don't know about tomorrow. She takes 5 pills twice a day.
I might go to Costco and buy some frozen meatballs. ALL dogs love those.
all my other dogs LOVE pills in Velveeta. They all gobble down their "cookies."

Gary, yesterday was National Peanut Butter Lovers' Day
I hope you and the girls celebrated appropriately - rounds of Jif for all!!
Cheese. Or butter.
We use cheese balls. Take some cheese and wrap the pill in it. Or butter. Maybull loves butter. The little dog will scarf them down, whatever. Maybull often chews her food, so sometimes she'll discover the pill and try to spit it out. But she's such a good dog that if I give it too her again say tell her to swallow it, she will. Then I give her another piece of cheese as a reward.
Woof!
FYI If your dog is on a strict diet, use a wet version of their
I have to give Frankie like 5 pills a day and she's on a hydrolyzed protein diet.
I just scoop it up on a spoon (usually 2 doses) w/the pills and wait for her to lick it all off, works every time!
that's funny Bella her self is a huge cheese nut.. any kind..
Hope everyone has a great day
Pill pockets work wonders for us!!! (nm)
much bully love~Christine, Dupree, Marley and Savannah
I do that, my girls love peanut butter sandwiches and don't noti
or, if they do notice, they don't seem to mind.

Works 100% even on our PICKY girl...
Just like Beth said .... Give several times in advance so they get the taste and then they fight over who gets it. They can smell it from the other room apparently and come a running. I have one we couldn't even get a pet tab into and now "No Worries".
LOL...yea she is a pickle...Bella is the major sniffer....
if she did not sniff anything..they would just go down the hatch.
I have a couple of dogs like Onslow that are not a problem with meds..but Bella and the one pug..forget it..it is a real chore..lol
LOL
I never tried the pill pockets just thought I'd suggest it, mine gobbles down pills. Good luck.

made me laugh.....the vet suggested making a peanut butter sandw
put some peanut butter on a piece of bread and wrap it around the pill..
the biggest thing about Bella is that she has to sniff anything that goes into her mouth first..
that is the problem that I have with my one pug too that is also terrible for taking meds..
the other dogs can be tricked much easier since they do not smell anything ...just swallow it..
tried them..but no go....
she just sniffs them and that is the end of that..lol
she does it everytime I try pill pockets on her
the one pug here is no good with the pill pockets either
I have 2 pugs and Gus that are usually fine with them though..
thanks for the tip

Have you tried pill pockets?
You could always just stroke it down her throat if nothing else works.

Peanut Butter works for us
M&G would eat a horseshoe if it was hidden in peanut butter! Cream cheese also works with them.
interesting..thanks..
that might just work out good too
thanks for the tip
all these are great ideas on the board this am.
might give a couple of them a try
liverwurst is a very odd consistency...can see them not sure about that at first..but they should love it.liver is one of Bella's favourite treats..
might just give that a try too
she is really not good at taking her meds..and this is going to be a long haul...
wandering about the cream cheese....
she might not be able to spit them out as easy that way
the vet suggested put in a piece of bread with some peanut butter as well
might try the cream cheese idea as well
thanks for the tip..
(sorry, I hit post a little too quickly on that...)
...haven't had quite enough coffee yet.
I meant to say...
"Good luck! Hope you find something that works for Bella!"
Cheese Please!
Cheese has always worked best for me. Chunk used to be able to extract the pill from just about anything else... But a good soft cheese that you can kind of squish around the pill always workded.
Good
what I do is
buy a can of their dog food and then pt it in the middle by the time they get to it it is usually gone. Or peanut butter.
Liverwurst!
Liverwurst or braunschweger work really well. We have dogs who won't take anything you offer them unless they have tasted it before. We give those kids a little liverwurst daily and when they need to take pills, they wolf them right down without hesitation. The first time they try it, without a pill, it takes a little effort to get them to taste them but once they do there's no turning back.

How I give pills
Have you ever tried cream cheese or cheese whiz? I use that on one of my bullies who spits out her pills. She loves cream cheese and will just gobble it down with the pill in the middle. With the other guys, I just put the pill in a piece of meat and they swallow it.
that is a good point...thanks..
can see that happening with Bella here too..
she would likely feel that pill and spit it out..
good point to make the meatballs small...
i hate giving Bella meds..lol.
thanks for the tip..
another thing.. sometimes Bella will feel it and spit it out so
the smaller the piece of meatball she just kind of swallow it and then I have another little piece ready to feed her so she doesn't have time to spit it out..
Hope everyone has a great day
same name..how cute is that...
Bella here is true pain in the butt when it comes to meds.
I have a pug here that is just as bad as Bella for taking meds too
same thing..he chews every piece of his dogfood one at a time..
gotta be something to do that.
does Bella chew her food one piece at a time there???
boiled meatballs sounds like a good idea too...to trick my Bella as well
Bella is on a few meds I have to boil meatballs and stick the pi
Hope everyone has a great day
another great idea...
soo many great ideas on the board today to try
velveeta cheese is great ..I love it
so if it did not work..I can eat it
true very soft..so should be able to wrap a pill in there
cheese is a big hit with the dogs here too
thanks for the tip and idea
Velveeta Cheese cubes! I have yet to see a bully turn
down a pill embedded in velveeta. Moze will beg for his "pill" when I give Ollie her benadryl. I just give him a little bit without a pill She licks it right down. The Velveeta really sticks to the pill well, and it coats it so well they don't know a pill is in the bite. Good luck!

beginning to wander if that is best...
to just let it ride its out some..
Bella is very small anyhow..not a big one
the sites on the net compared it to a black eye in people..and that they need to take their time to heal.
they would just give us compresses for a black eye likely...
so kinda makes sense to not do much ..
my post didtn work, anyway NOTHING
they will go away.
Pred has way to many side effects to use for just a blood pocket in the ear.

Agree w/Vicky
about no Pred for the Hematoma.
Norbert had hematoma's in both of his ears when he got old and we just let them be. They went away on there own. The ear will change a little but since he wasn't a show dog it didn't matter to me and I really was the only one to notice any difference. They get slightly shriveled.
if not pred..what else??
do you think it will just heal on it own
its been there awhile and obviously not going anywhere for now
the hemotomoa is very small
any other suggestion that you have Vicky?? I would love to hear what you think
feeding a pill off the spoon is an awesome idea...Bella is great with a spoon and food anyhow..so that might just work.
feed off a spoon
i use yogart and give 1 spoon with out pill, 1 spoon with pill and anohter with out.
I put the spoon in the mouth and they lick it off and have to swollow. the pred pill is not that big and you can crush it.
I would not use pred for a hematoma. JMO
