Hi everyone
First of all, many thanks for good thoughts and prayers for my boy, he really needed them. These were two really hard days for him...me, I can take it.
We got to Davis on Thursday at 10 am and finished all
testing at 5 pm. There was a strong suspicion that Chester had a brain tumor so
next day they scheduled to perform MRI on him. We spent a night in a hotel as I was not willing to part with my boy even for a moment. I had to bring him in
at 7 am for prep work and then MRI was done some
time around 11 am or later. By the time he was discharged it was 6pm. So we came home really late, and we were both exhausted. But the good news is that MRI is clean, no brain tumor.
There are some changes, characterized as genetic, meaning he was born
that way, but do not affect how he is, or rather make him the dopey
Chester he is, has to to with more fluid in his brain than in a normal dog. But his brain make up do contribute to seizures. We are waiting for results from
spinal tap, preliminary results came clean but we will not have full
results until Monday.
His anemia was decided NOT to be autoimmune and
rather due to massive internal bleeding from anti-inflammatories--that is
the theory right now. They are going to wean him off prednisone and imuran
and let his system try to build up blood cells on his own...so more blood
tests in the near future and if he slips, transfusion, but there is a hope
he will be doing better off prednisone. If all this will not help he will
be scoped (we will take him back to Davis for that if necessary, but I
hope he will get strong and fight anemia on his own) to explore some
internal issue but for now they suspect this is the case. He was given
some new medication to build up his stomach and protect it from bleeding
and ulcers, etc. They also gave him shot of iron. So we are not out of the woods on this one, but there are high hopes he just needs an extra time to recover on his own and that prednisone was counter-productive.
Neurologist believes he just developed seizures and will be indefinitely
on anti-seizure medications. He is on very low dose and she wants to see
him in two weeks for another evaluation to re-check his reactions, etc. as
he shows signs of limbs weakness on these medication. So he is in good
hands and they will be also consulting with the vets at Adobe Hospital (my local vets) each of the step through his blood checks.
I came back exhausted but very impressed
with UC Davis. Mostly, relieved there is no brain tumor, the thing that was suspected all along since the beginning. UC Davis is where Chester, my million dollar dog as I call him these days, goes from now on for any major stuff.
Everyone loved Chester, he is such a clown and cutie, even guys who were remodeling reception area came twice to ask me if I have any news, they fell in love with him just saying hello to him. One, at the end of the day, when they were wrapping up came to me and told me he has been secretly praying for Chester all day as he was working. That just made me cry.
So you can imagine, we have a way to recover but we are glad we excluded so far any major issues like brain tumor. Chester looks like mowed lawn, so many patches of fur has been shaved off for testing, catheters, I need some advice how to grow it back.
Thanks for all your prayers and good thoughts.
Kisses and hugs to all your babies.
*****Thank you everybully, we finally got some rest....
it was my turn to sleep with Lily and it used to be that sleeping with her meant constant getting up. Now she goes out on her own, just one "up" for human to get water bowl changed at night and we're good. On other hand sleeping with Chester is an ordeal, he is up 3-4 times at night to get up to go out (he is weak so he needs help) and my husband unwisely decided Chester needs to sleep in the bedroom (I think he cannot stand to sleep without a bully), so the person sleeping with Chester is sleep deprived. Also, medication makes Chester hungry so he starts to alarm at 4 am. Then, after breakfast, he wants to patrol the house before he decides he is ready for a nap again, LOL.
It is my turn to sleep with Lily this week, I can imagine by the end of this week my husband will change his mind and let Chester sleep with us so that at least one person is of a sound mind...Sleep depravation will do it to you, LOL.
Dawn...
I am dead tired, but I would be glad to send you all information (fax or e-mail) from Chester visit. I do not have neuro write up yet, they will e-mail it to me today or Monday, I did not want to wait as I had a long drive and there was no need since they discussed everything with me, so I will get it in e-mail soon and I can forward it to you. I can also call you if you want to chat for a bit. e-mail me with you phone number and I will try to call you when I get better (I am a bit under weather right now).
I am so sorry to hear about Betty, but maybe that is not tumor but neurological change many older dogs experience?
I will keep her in my prayers all the time. Hugs.
Thank you so much for the update
I have been checking for Chester updates and hoping all was going okay. Sounds like you got as good news as you could hope for given what a terrible time Chester has been having. I hope he contiues to do okay and gets better and better.

for the fur..wander if the missing LINK would help Chester..
it is a supplement that you can buy online or your local petshop. it does wanders for helping the dogs immune system and things like that. I used it on a boston years ago for her patchy fur ..and it worked out good. takes time but a bag lasts forever. Lily could use it too..just a natural supplement.
this brought tears to my eyes..
sounds like you finally got some answers.
good thing it is not a tumour..
sounds like they have some handle on the bleeding issues too
SOUNDS LIKE You got the awesome vet on the planet..
and great assistants too..
bulldogs win the hears of everyone they meet..
best of the luck with Chester
so glad that you updated..
feel much better now
stay strong
and a million dollar bulldog..no kidding..can see that..
I've been waiting and praying...
I keep checking in for news and was getting so worried.
Do they have him on sucrulfate (coats the stomach)? Metoclopramide (Increases motility for a slow gut)? Pepcid (antacid)?
Remind me: Why was he on pred?
The latest thought with Betty is a brain tumor. She had her spleen removed without biopsy (no point), and if it was hemangiosarcoma, it mets to the brain often. And lungs/liver. The ultrasound showed clean lungs/liver, and xray showed nothing in the skull abnormal, but of course may not show it at all because it's soft tissue. I won't do the MRI because 1) I am out of money after Raven, etc. and 2) It wouldn't change anything to know. But it may explain her bleeding if it burst and stopped on it's own. She also is having more motility probs than normal, which could be age, but also could be neuro. Is this close to why they suspected Chester had a brain tumor? I'm curious as to why they were suspecting that with him, since you are doing what my next step would be... Are there any other clues they asked you about? Like eye movement, or mobility issues, if it had been one?
The man that came to you and said he'd been praying for you all day made me cry! Bless that man.
Hang in there, you are the BEST mommy in the world and Chester is the luckiest dog to be loved so much.

Show Stopper
will help the hair growth. Like what Petunia is using. Have to be careful though because they can get fat real fast on Show Stopper.
Missing Link will also help and would be good for his immune system.
I am so glad to read this...definitely sounds like he will
be on the road to recovery. I have been worried about him and praying. What an ordeal for you both.
I have been watching for your post

Continued Prayers for Chester...
I'm sure he's getting the best possible care. Hang in there!
Pretty Please...
Glad you are near UC Davis......
and were able to get their expertise with good news! I hope it continues to only be good results for all of you.
Chester
Good to hear about Chester! And happily no apparent dangerous stuff!
If Chester were my dog, I would take him to see my holistic vet, to help him build up a new life. I would advice you to consult a homeopatic, or holistic vet to help him get over all this.
And his hair will grow by itself....
Good luck and keep us posted,
Ineke
