i have searched SFA, Josie now has "black" skin on her haunches and back. i have read where melatonin helps, and sunshine as well. so i guess my question is melatonin the key, or vitamin D? we have had little sun, but it seems that the more she is out the blacker she gets. last week she strolled around the back yard a lot and now she looks like a burnt marshmallow. holy crap we start obedience class this sunday, and I really dont want to have to kick somebody's @$$ for comments about my girl. I know she is healthy, but i guess a trip to the vet is in order. anyone wnat to throw in their .02? Thanks Tamsen

there is a huge study that proves
that dogs who are spay after the age of 4 and have their ovaries conserved...life up to 5 years longer!!! I am going to try to find the article and post it!

Calm coat..........
did Rocky use long term? I know both he and Josie are "sensitive," can it be bought at pet stores? I have seen it advertised on the board here, but never thought it would be for sfa. I know the "Missing Link" supplement has lit a fire under her ass and she has more energy than any bulldog should. tee hee, you would think she was a puppy again! i will give it a try, did you tell me you used dermarest on Rocky as well for some itchy scratchy patch? how did that work out, she has a little break out once in awhile on her chest and though it doesnt itch it is a little pink. thanks for the inof, tamsen
sfa
hi Tamsen, Lily had sfa and Rocky has it now, I used calm coat on Lily and it came back quickly, Rocky I d it is doing nice, I am using oils, and the sun is getting warmer so they both are spending alot more time outside
well truth be known
what does a female bully go thru after having been spayed? I was thrown straight into menopuase much like Josie Louise (tee hee) and I felt like crap and lost some of my hair until HRT. So there may be some truth to it being hormonal. I wonder if any vets have done any studies? Tamsen
Thanks Julia
you are right, elephant skin. that is funny about the fleece, Josie wears hers with the same thought of being cold. Salmon oil as in fish oil gel caps? or something else specific to canine? tamsen
Is she spay?
I am convinced it is due to hormonal fluctuations. Feeding Showstopper MAY help, but for sure it will make her more healthy, in general.

Good diet, lots of sun, and salmon oil..
Grover had a HORRIBLE bout of alopecia in his first two years of life. So much so, that his sides were always black, even though the fur grew back in! It grew in black! LOL...
That was when I switched him to a raw diet, started giving him salmon oil, and letting him have outside deck snoozing time as much as possible.
It was like an elephant, on both sides. It was awful, but it was just aesthetic. I bought him lots of fleeces in the winter since I figured he was chillier than he would be with FUR.
That nipped it in the bud and it eventually grew back... but it took a WHILE.

Thank you
I think Josie needs 1. some sun, and 2. some more sun, and 3. me having patience. thanks for the info, she was a mess when she was rescued so it my just take longer. she is a little on the chubby side now and started gaining some weight after spay in september. so hopefully spring is around the corner and she will benefit form the sun and more exercise. Thanks for the advice. Tamsen
My experience with SFA.. (long)
The first litter my Diana had was 9 pups and when I pulled her off the pups she was thinner than I like. It takes a lot to feed 9 several times each day for several weeks! After I pulled the pups, her hair coat was blowing and her sides and back were the last to recover. There were black skin spots on her skin under her red coat. She had her pups in August and it wasn't until she went through a full summer into the next fall that her coat recovered in those areas, despite her putting all the weight back on and more. She tends to be a little chubby....mmmmm....Vet said not to worry as long as she was good weight on a good food with all the vitamins and minerals. She turned out fine and I just had to be patient. Not a strong suite when it comes to our babies for me-ha!
And always .....Winston
how long has she been on the missing link?? or did you try it ye
also you could try to email...
Nacho's MOM too..
she is great with the rescue dogs and could likely give you some great ideas as well
thanks onswo's mom
i think a trip to the vet is in order, she has always had the black patch on her back but now her haunches are black. i am okay with the cosmetic because she is my girl, and her foster mom is the obedience class instructor so that is good too, so she will just have to wear a sign that reads, "to know me is to love me." tee heee
thanks Pat, i will have to take pics when i get home.
i just cant believe how quick this happened. and she walks around without a care in the world, she really makes me laugh.
Probably SFA
but you should go to vet to rule out hypothyroidism.
Sometimes melatonin helps bring the fur back in and if it is SFA most people see improvement by late summer fall. Sunshine will also help her I'm sure (i've only read up on it Onslows never had it). Even if you have to explain to people what it is, atleast it's not painful, just cosmetic. =)

I am wandering if Baby Moses MOM..Lisa could give you some pointers here. maybe an email to her would be a good idea since she is not always on here. looks like she went through some of this with Moses when he first came..
will keep Josie in my thoughts..and YOU TOO
