Any tips on integrating a new bully with our cats?

Our adoption has been approved and we are now just waiting for the house to be done to bring home our sweet bully boy! I'm so stoked! I cried when we got the call Tuesday. We'll be bringing him home the end of May (time to unpack and get moved and get the cats settled in before bringing in another stressor.) I am worried about the boys adjusting to a dog. They were around dogs when they were first born but haven't been since 12 weeks of age and are now almost a year old. We are dog sitting my best friend's dog this weekend and while Slick is doing awesome with the dog (they pretty much ignore each other), Charlie is in a fit. He hisses and growls whenever the dog goes by. Pepper, the dog, who is used to cats doesn't even flinch and ignores them. She doesn't have a crate and basically just stays in my daughters' room. When our bully boy comes home, he will have a crate and will only have short, supervised times out of it during transition. I want to make the transition as easy on everyone as possible and could really use some tips on how to do that. I feel like a lost new parent! =) Thanks in advance.

Hi, we are fairly new here...

nice to "meet" you! I read this board for a few yrs, then posted in Nov.I think..anyways, I got cats and bullys..most of the time, they ignore each other..but my savannah who is the youngest(2 yrs) gets a hair up her bottom to chase the cats...its not everyday, but prob.a few times a week, I tell her No...doesnt help much.lol..but shes really just playing, never goes after them to hurt them...kitties aren't too fond of this playing! They will def. react..and after a few times of getting hit, hopefully, the bully will back down...
Are you getting your rescue bully from Adopt a bull?I know they have a Frodo too!Congrats!!!

much bully love~Christine, Dupree, Marley and Savannah

Nice to meet you too!

I've been here for 5 years now but have taken the last 2 "off". And you're thinking of the right Frodo. happy.gif

I think that as long as Frodo doesn't go for them, then we will be able to have a peaceful coexistance. Charlie is a lot mellower today but I've still heard some hissing. My friend's dog is just so used to cats that she pays them no mind. I'm becoming a little less stressed but will still keep my guard up.

You can try...................

dipping Frodo in a catnip bath and just lightly towel him off. He may get intimidated if you then put him in a crate, so you may want to let him out in a room for a while and see what the kitties decide to do. See what happens when I have too much rum??? Hey, it's a joke! Congratulations on the adoption. Your new home will be extra blessed with a bully in it. Cats can adapt to just about anything. Our son and daughter-in-law have 9. Can't wait to see some pics!

I brought a cat in when Bella was 2 and Gus was 1...

she is fine with Gus but totally does not like Bella. Bella does not like her either..they agree to disagree and stay out of each others way...that is the way it has always been.
the cat is fine with all 3 of the pugs and Gus..just Bella..

it was a slow transition. what they suggested for me too..was since the cat was an adult..was to put her litter box and so on with her in a closed room in the house and then slowly leave the door open. I put her in the basement..the dogs do not go down there..and she slowly started to come upstairs on her own. took quite awhile for her to come upstairs though for any period of times.

she sleeps all the day and the dog are active all day..so it kinda works out here for the most part. she will still growl and hiss at Bella..and that has been a year and half already

claw covers

No need for them here. Our boys are front declawed. And yes, May seems so far away!

Oh, one more thing! I keep claw covers (Softpaws) on our cats.

That way, if they decide to take a swipe at Frodo, he won't get a scratch possibly on the eye. My kitties play with Moze, so I try to protect him from a stray claw. I would be beside myself if I had to wait until May!!! I hope it passes quickly for you happy.gif

Thank you!

That is kind of the way the are now with our dogsitting this weeken. Slick really doesn't care but I'm worried about Charlie. We are fully prepared to take it sloooooooow. And we've had a bully before so we know the temperment! =) I guess I'm just anxious to get him home to us and get everyone settled in. I love your picture! So sweet!!

Andre'a, I have no advice re cats and bullies

But I had to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS on Frodo!!! I've gazed at that boy's photos and he is wonderful - I am very happy for all of you!

My bullies had never been around cats and were one year when

we brought them home. We have a himmie, and 3 tabbies...all get along with Ollie and Moze. Cats are smart enough to observe from afar, then gradually come around and sniff or show interest. My bullies have never hurt our kitties. Deuce and Tom love our bullies. They sleep with them in the perla bed, and they rub on them during the day when they are sleeping in the family room. I think you need to give your kitties plenty of space to just watch. They will decide whether to go near your boy, or just coexist. One of our kitties just moves around Ollie and Moze. He is a bit jumpy, and is that way with people too. I'm excited for you! You'll love having a bully.
