For all the single bulldog owners out there

In the event that something tragic would happen to us, do you have a will stating where your dog(s) will go?

My parents have been harping on me to get a will, so I was wondering if this needed to be stated in there? I love my parents to death but am not sure they are up for the care of a bulldog and I have 2 so more care.

Just wondering what your thoughts were.

thanks

I have provided for a friend to care for my bullies

as Trustee, for Brewster & Darlin & Bruno's care.

I have made plans

I didn't put it in my official will but in a hand written note that I've attached to my will. I'm assuming that my family will respect my wishes on this. Not a bad idea to have something...

I just went through this....

I put down that the bulldogs would go to rescue...but the one is my sons so he can find someone else to take care of her.
Gus after I put in the will would go to rescue..has no decided that he would take Gus.

the pugs would likely go to rescue...
that way I am sure they would find a good home..

I put all this in a will

That is how it is written in my will

I forgot the exact words, but I named all of my dogs and cats and then added "and any other dogs, cats, or other pets I own."

What our attorney said

when making our wills. First overtime the dogs you have will change so while you can put something in the will do you want to redo the will everytime an animal changes.

So what you do is list separetely who should get the dogs. Then within the Will there is the legal jargon that relates to pets owned and to see the itemized list.
Something in that manner. Each state may be a little different.

Ha, ha! Look out, Gary!

I'd take care if I were you! Boo may come and smother you in your sleep herself just to take up that irresistable offer!! happy.gif

not just for single owners -

In a few cases I've placed a pup or adult with an 'older' couple and I now have a paragraph in my Placement Contract that addresses the owners' need to provide for the dog in the occurrence they can not, and that I be notified of the dogs disposition.
I suggest they give my contact info to their Vet and Lawyer so I can be easily reached in case the dog(s) need to be fostered immediately. Also I re-iterate the stipulation that the dog be returned to me if they do not, will not, or can not keep it.

Whuh? Mr. Gary?

Youz know dat Bootibull Boo has an open invitation to come shack up wif me ANYTIME....

I'm going to draft a will so that Kirby is taken care of

Sadly, I would never leave him in the care of one my family members. In case I die, Kirby will go to a rescue group. I know they will find him a great home.

Gary-Make sure your vet lets BDW know if the babies are in need,

I am sure we would all want to help find them the PERFECT home!

I have not outlined it in a will, no, but my wishes are known to

I wouldn't trust anyone in my family to care for Sophia. She is spoken for should anything happen to me. My horses all have a named person to take them should anything happen. Kora would go back to my dad, who gave her to me years ago. He loves her and would take excellent care of her.

My vet gets my dogs plus money for them. Cats too. He will try to find homes for them.

Absolutely.....

.....without a will, next of kin (which in your case would be your parents) become the executor of your estate. If you have any concerns over your pups care, it is definitely a good idea to make an official will stating your wishes as specifically as possible. Despite a families best intentions, logic often becomes clouded with emotion when a loved one becomes ill or passes. As part of the grief process, it is easy to make decisions which may ease the temporary pain of loss (such as keeping your pups just to keep a piece of you) without considering what is actually most beneficial in the long run.
As a side note, I encourage everyone to have a living will should you be severely injured or ill. It is NEVER enough to make your wishes known verbally or via a simple handwritten note ahead of time. As mentioned before, emotions during times like those cloud judgement - even when family has the best of intentions.
(Sorry, soapbox! Those of us in healthcare see these situations and the subsequent suffering lack of advanced directives cause every day!)
HUGS!
