Good evening!
Our Tuffster is teething full throttle now and is causing some serious damage to our wood paneling and furniture. Any advice to deter him from chewing? Our trainer said bitter apple only lasts for so long and can damage woodwork. He thought regular dishsoap might work better (not dishwasher detergent--just the regular dish soap). Any other suggestions to end his path of distruction?
Thanks!
just called a knuckle bone...
ask for one ..
they are really just soup bones..
they work great ...best thing in the world..
feed it raw and it really helps the chewing that bulldogs love to do
I feed mine soup bones all the time...they last forever...
the bulldog would far rather chew on the bone..than anything else in the house..guaranteed
goodluck
just ask for a good soup bone

At about Matilda third month of life, we realized that life was never going to be the same. We had to wear socks/shoes all the time, if barefoot and in Matilda's sights we would quickly be putting are feet up. She with was a monster with her teeth. Supervise all the time. At our wits end, which was about 5 months, we learned of the penny can trick from this board and it worked for us!

I found the best thing for this was...............
give them a big knuckle bone. you can buy them at the grocery store or butcher. give it your bully raw. they will soon learn that they can only chew the bone. put it in his crate..serves the need to chew. they love them and they last forever.
as far as chewing on the furniture and walls and such...say NO like Vicky said and give him the bone to chew.
I only had one chewer..and the bone worked great for Gus.
Hi Kim!
Yes, I would just fill up a kong right before bed and then just freeze over night. I found this to be the easiest method. If I had an over ripe banana, I did the same thing. This can be a little messy, so be sure to lay a blanket down. Hope some of these suggestions help. You will survive your boys teething stage!

Don't Terrify Him
I personally think it is better to watch him more closely, use a crate when you can't watch him and use positive training techniques then scare tactics. In the end you will have a much more stable and happy personality.
Patience with training puppies is really important. I have yet to have my house or furniture destroyed by puppies. Because I monitor every minute they are out loose. If they are not watched they are crated. They have all been given free run at different ages. MacKenzie (my dear angel) was the youngest getting free roam at 6 months. The others have ranged from 1 - 2 years and I begin with short times (ie 20 mintues). Ester so far has been the most trying one and still has her moments. I came home the other day to a standing lamp knocked over with a lamp shade dented and her crate in the middle of the living room. She evidently was trying to get her blanket out of the crate and I'm guessing had the zoomies sometime during the day to knock over the lamp.
Remember he is just like a child...would you frighten your child for a desired behavior?
Best of luck!
Thanks for the great suggestions everyone!!
Everything you suggested is terrific. FYI--our trainer suggested the penny in the can trick but tuffy just thinks it's a game and goes after the can. However, a cookie sheet terrifies him so maybe that's the way to go. I'll also give the bitter apple/soap, etc. a try and remember to keep my eyes on him more!!

Thanks, Pat. Do I just ask for a Knuckle bone?
Or is it called something else?

Great suggestions, Michelle. I have a followup question!
I'll have to try the frozen peanut butter in the kong idea. Do you just stuff the kong and then stick it in the freezer? And I will go buy some of that bitter apples stuff today. Sounds much more convenient than dish liquid..yuck!
By the Way, Tedi is stunning!!

what worked for me......
we found that icy hot/bengay smelly stuff worked good for us. we would rub it on the areas and they hated the smell! also vicks worked well too. hope this helps

Try Irish Spring bar soap rubbed on where you don't want them to
have to supervise closely and offer appropriate chew toys instead of household furniture.
And always .....Winston
I owned stock in bitter apple when my were pups......
you have to re-apply often but it does work. It never caused any damage to wood furniture, my husband is in the cabinet business and he had no problem with us using it When mine were pups, they had use of our kitchen while we were at work or away, I took out all chairs, bar stools etc the less they had access too, the better. You can also try the 'pennies in a can' method. When he starts chewing inapprpriate items, shake the can and tell him NO! I also used to freeze peanut butter, mashed bananas etc inside of Kongs. This will keep him busy longer & feel good on his teething gums.

if you can not see him he is in a crate, if he chews tell him
NO and give him something he is allowed to chew on.
I have had only 1 dog chew on furnature 1 time and it was not my turn to babysit.
