I hope it's okay with the Admins if I post this HERE instead of the medical/ health board----but that board
tends to get visited / responded to less often. Meaty is going to have a large sebaceous cyst removed from
his back, plus a much smaller one from his leg. After lotsa research and angsting over the right thing to
do, he'll be having it removed next Monday-----we wanted the vet just to DRAIN it, but it's gotten so big
and tight, there's a risk of rupture, which of course, could cause lotsa problems!....
....
Meaty is almost SEVEN (noooo---where did the years go?!!?) and it was MY idea that while he's under
anesthesia, why not have his FIRST professional dental cleaning!??! Two vets through his life have
always said his (and Sophie's!) teeth and gums are fine, yet-----EVERYTHING we read says doggies
NEED real cleanings..... I've asked some other peeps, and SO many have said they've never gotten
it for their dogs, and they're fine. One lady told me that unlike HUMAN cleanings, when they clean
DOG's teeth, it gets rid of too much enamel .....thus, resulting in MORE cleanings, which (in HER WORDS!)
"a big MONEYMAKER for the vet"....
...
ugh....what does everybully think? I'm so torn !!! Again, it was MY suggestion to clean his teeth--- Obviously,
we want to do EVERYTHING to keep him healthy and prolong his life :-) Thanks in advance for your
replies!!! (Oh, and P.S....as discusse with our wonder-BULL vet, there may not be enough TIME to
get the cleaning done, he won't know until my sweet Meaty is asleep.......and of COURSE, the vet
won't do the tooth cleaning if the cyst removals take too long).....Hubbs and I are already
nervous about aneshesia-----even tho we trust our vet completely!!!
Our sweet Archimedes "MEATY" Bones (or as we say...boneSHHH!) ---born 11/28/08---- our first bullllyyyy!!!
And SOPHIE Bubbles *Rapscallion* (LOL!) ---born 4/3/11----our second bulllllyyyy!!!!
I would do if it you can...
their teeth get worse as they get older. We had Jessa's done while she was having palate surgery when we first got her. I wish we had done Oliver's years ago, he's 11 1/2 now and his teeth are awful, but he is way to old to go under without a darn good reason.
How does his teeth look? Does he have a lot of plaque
and tartar buildup? I think alot of it depends on the dog. Our 13 1/2 yr old bully never had a cleaning and her teeth were darn good until her passing. On the other hand, our lab mix had horrible teeth. She had a couple cleanings before her passing at 13. While under have him eval the teeth. If needed do it, if not needed don't. I am with you on the anesthesia part, I get so nervous.
Thanks, Kathy & Janis.....his teeth & gums look good,
and like I said, 2 vets have NEVER recommended a cleaning, it was my idea just to keep him healthy :-)
I'm still torn, but I think I'll just leave it in our wonder-bull vet's hands....if there's enough time after he removes
Meaty's cyst (enough time left on the anesthesia), AND his teeth need a cleaning, he'll do it ---if his teeth
need cleaning but there's NOT enough time for the vet to do it, I guess hubbs & I will worry about that later.... hee hee
