We all have a story of how we came up with our bullies names, and why we call him or her, this or that.
Lets here them ! :) :)
Gizmo: She was originally named 'Chloe' but when we rescued her, just didnt fit into that name, she was mischievious, and had this look, this GREMLIN Look about her, with the toofy grin and pointed ears. She just reminded me of the Gremlin 'Gizmo' in the original Gremlins movie from the 80's.
We also had a Lab, and I had made the comment, when she was a pup at the breeder 'Boy she is going to TORMENT the cats!' so bingo ! her name became TORI which was short for Torment :) :)
Lastly I had a kitty, when I rescued her from the SPCA, she had a scratch on her eye, that never healed, so she was blind in that eye, and that was the reason most people over looked this Imperfect kitty. - IMPERFECT became IMPIE ! ! !
Lets hear your naming stories :)

our story is kind of boring...
I got Winston through the wonderful BCARN who basically told me that he had been bounced around a lot (and he was only 10 months old when I got him) so I figured we'd stick with Winston since that had been the only constant in his short life to that point. But fear not, since then he's gotten more than a few nicknames (most of which he responds to). ha! :)
Shannon and Winston :)
My swimming bully buddy!
Well...
You all .got to see how Jack's named evolved from something that was in honor of my husband's Navy career to a character in my daughter's favorite show to a Disney character/Law & Order character. Of all the names we had to choose from, Jack just looked like a Jack. But I'm thinking he should have been named Cookie because thats the only word he'll come to.
My 16 1/2 yr old cat is named Doofus and who knew when I named him that yrs ago in my 20s, that I'd still be explaining why he got the name now that I'm in my 30s. I rescued Doofus's mother and found out she was pregnant. She had a litter of kittens in my bedroom closet. My dad took the two girls and I kept the male. Doofus got his name when he kept falling into the toilet...and trashcan...and whatever else he could manage to get stuck in. He's been on death's door a few times but always manages to pull through. No one would know that he is 16 because he acts like a kitten at times and a grumpy old man at other times. But he's a great cat and probably my last because I can't imagine any other cat being able to live up to what he is.

hahaha!
I really love the name doofus, honestly LOL!
Doofus made me laugh too!

We had a devil of a time
We had a devil of a time coming up with Beatrix's name. We tried a whole lot of names on in the weeks between visiting her at the breeder and picking her up. In fact, she was very nearly named Wednesday, after Wednesday Addams. (The literary geek in me also wanted to name her Lorem Ipsum, but Mike shot that one down really fast.)
In the end, Mike found her name. He started browsing baby naming websites, and especially looking at Germanic-origin names. He found Beatrix, which means "traveller", and we knew that between coming to work with us and going to faires and family holidays and eveything else, she was going to be a very well travelled pup. So we gave her a name with meaning, hoping it would be a little prophetic.
Veronica, have you read the works of Jasper Fforde?
If you are a literary nerd, these are the books for you! In a nutshell, they are literary detective novels, where the characters from other books get tired of being in their own story and jump into others, generally wreaking havoc. He is just too clever for words - the first (The Eyre Affaire) is a masterpiece of modern literature (calling Mr. Rochester!). Funny, VERY quirky and if you studied English lit. For example, in one of the books, his main detective has a baby which turns out to have a speech impediment - it only speaks in Lorum Ipsum!! I almost had a seizure when I read that - since I'm an editor/writer and all. Very few people outside the field would get that gag.
Anyooo, I may be rambling but they are truly fun. Here's a link to his site and books: http://www.jasperfforde.com/bookstack.html
I love those books! I've read
I love those books! I've read all but the most recent of them, "One of our Thursdays is Missing". :)
Have you read his Nursery Crimes books? Not quite as good as the Thursday Next books, but still fun.
I have!
I agree - not quite as good as the Thursday Next books, but still very clever. I was just on his site and he has a couple of new ones I'll look into.
I love the name Lorem Ipsum.
I love the name Lorem Ipsum. You could just call her 'the Greek.' LOL! Can I steal that idea?
Feel free! Mike shot it down
Feel free! Mike shot it down so fast, I doubt I'll ever actually have a chance to use it. :)
Steph, you would also like the books we discussed above
If you haven't read them, try the Tuesday Next series. Very, very clever.
Thanks for the info.
I'll get a copy next time I'm at the book store. (I'm there a lot.)
Onslow was named after a character on a britcom
called Keeping Up Appearances. Here is a little bio of his character and a pic. We just LOVED the character and it seemed perfect.
"Onslow is everything his sister-in-law Hyacinth despises, and threatens her social-climbing efforts. He is an overweight and unemployed man who earns his money through betting on horses, spends his time drinking beer, eating crisps and smoking cigarettes, and watching television. On many occasions he watches horse racing, and one of the repeated elements of comedy is his method of operating his ancient TV set by banging on it. Onslow describes himself as "work-shy, bone idle, and out of condition" and has been known to ponder "the inconvenience of working." Whenever Onslow is unpleasantly surprised by something, such as running out of beer or being insulted, he usually retorts with his sarcastic catchphrase: "Oh, nice!". He habitually wears a baseball cap with the FH logo of New Zealand earth-moving and road construction company Fulton Hogan."
ha!
I imagine Onslow has a similar "Oh Nice!" expression in his repertoire... Actually, it's kind of apparent in your signature pic! :)
Shannon and Winston :)
My swimming bully buddy!
resemblence is uncanny :)
I sure hope your Onslow doesnt drink beer ;) ha ha

I chose the name even before I had Stella
It was part of my "one day I'll have a bulldog" fantasy: to own a little white girl named Stella. And lo and behold, that's what happened :)
Zimmer is for Don Zimmer....
ex-bench coach of the NY Yankees. Hubby is the Yankees fan. I wanted "Bucco" for Artie Bucco of the Sopranos but after we saw the big white head of Zimmer's father, that name won!

Silverback's Immaculate Interception, "James"
We searched for a name for a year before we got our Maybull
We found her name – the spelling included – in a baby naming book. It seemed perfect. People tell us that she looks like a Mabel or a Maybull.
PollyAnna was named after a dream
I kept having a dream with a dog named Polly...don't know why...just happened. The dog was not a bulldog though it was a Miniature pinscher like our little Penny is. A few months later we brought our little Bulldog home. Like the dog in the dream I named her Polly. My husband added the Anna because he thought she should have a middle name....so henceforth she was named PollyAnna and we have had her for 6 years now...she is the dog of my dreams... We LOVE her...

Bronx was named after The Bronx Bombers!!
Hello All Bronx was named after The New York Yankees. My wife Stacey and I thought of many names but I'm a diehard Yankee fan so Bronx won out. LOL
Bronx
name
I am and old Marine and have always wanted a bulldog since they are the Corps mascot. We are at a place in life now where owning a bulldog makes sense so my wife surprised me with one last Christmas eve. He is great! There are several unofficial mascots around the Corps but the official one is named Sgt. Chesty and he lives in Washington DC at 8TH and I with a whole platoon of Marines spoiling him. I named mine after one of the Corps heros - a double Medal Of Honor winner Sergeant Major Dan Daly. ( He coined the phrase "follow me do you sons of bitches want to live forever")

At least a year before we got her, we tried out names
And then, a couple of months before she was born, I found the name Maybull in a baby naming book, sunning spelling and all. It seemed perfect. People often tell us, 'She looks like a Mabel (Maybull.)'

Dozer and harleys names..
The night i brought Dozer home i had one of my stuffed animals that richy had first gotten me when we first started dating... As soon as he came in he ran right for the bear, tripped over and rolled in the wall.. so my responce was " jeeze richy hes like a freaking bulldozer already!".. Richy was like omg BULL- DOG... BULL- DOZER... were calling him Dozer!. hahah and his name fits perfectly!!
Harley on the other hand... Richy has a Harley davidson that hes been saving up for.. So when we brought her, her original name was Chloe... cute, but she had spunk and an edge to her... So i told Richy this she could be his little " harley davidson" for now.. And he liked it..... so its stuck :)....
Love the stories above!!! sooo super cute :)
Nicole and Dozer
Dozer, it fits! :)
When we 1st got Gizmo home, no matter where her ball was, she was pushing who/whatever out of the way for her ball... now she whimpers when its under the table, I guess she isnt that flexible puppy going through things anymore... or she just got smart...Gizmo "I can push and get tired... or I can just whimper a bit, and Daddy will come get it for me".... HEY ! I'VE BEEN HAD ! ! BY A BULLDOG ! ! ! she has ME trained! How did THAT happen? :)

gracie
when I was little my mom used to say to me "whats up Gracie?" what are you doing Gracie?" I love you Gracie" (don't know why she did that since my name is Beth!) so my mom passed away a couple of years ago and I miss her more than ever. I knew the day I picked her up from the breeder her name was going to be GRACIE in memory of my mom :)
Warm smiles :)
Gracie, just beautiful

Well I'm just intrigued with the mobster mafia stuff - so I knew

Rocco "The Bull" Capone
Hazel was given the name by
Hazel was given the name by her rescue group...better than name Daria that the Houston SPCA gave her! I added the Nut b/c she's very nutty at times!!
Junior looked like his daddy. Izzy...
Izzy was the fattest rolly polly puppy ever, so he was named after "Bruddah Iz" (The Hawaiian singer)
"James" is actually his calll name....
his real name is Silverbacks Immaculate Interception. His dad's name is Addicted to Silver and our favorite football players nicname is Silverback. His real name is james harrison (hence the call name) The Immaculate Interception was an interception/ run back (99 yards!) executed during the Superbowl by said player! Best moment of my life for the best boy in the world!
Silverback's Immaculate Interception, "James"
Matilda
Well, a few days into fostering Matilda, we thought it was cruel just to keep calling "hey puppy" "hey cutie." Since she's an English Bulldog, I thought she needed a "proper" English name. One of my favorite childhood authors was Roald Dahl, and my favorite books "Matilda" So, it just came to me! Still looking for a middle name... it will come :)
Also, reading all these stories made me realize how many of you have rescued bullies or just have some really neat stories of how your furbabies came into your life. Warmed my heart after a long day of teaching!
