need help with suggestions for food for my itchy girl

Home / Forums / Bulldog Medical Health

I had my girl on Zignauture Venison and she stopped chewing her paws after being on TOTW wild boar and paw chewing  (I got her from a rescue and they were feeding her crap also) but she was shedding like crazy on the zignature I switched her to TOTW pacific stream after several weeks she is now scooting, scratching, paw licking, getting up and running and stopping and looking at her rear.. but her coat looks awesome.. im at a loss I think this may be from the food, she was scooting on TOTW wild boar too and not on the zignature but on zignature shedding by the handful.. I am at a loss.. any suggestions?  I dont see any fleas, she is on flea preventative, I dont ever see any worms either.. when I got her and she was scooting the vet said her anal glands were empty..she did just have hip surgery and just started using her legs again but I dont think that would make her itch and chew her paws, I just took her to another vet who thought it was her anal glands, they expressed them and she is still scooting.. arg.. help...

I would try another Grain Free food. Lots of good ones to try.

I have 2 bulldogs.  1 gets Honest Kitchen Zeal Dehydrated.  The other gets Nature's Variety Limited Ingredient Lamb.  They both do really well,  but it was a work in progress to find which one worked for them.  If you change foods give a 1-2 TBSP of pure pumpkin with the food.  Helps with preventing stomach issues with the change.  I usually just change...I don't gradually introduce the new food.

Thank u!

I may try the natures variety..

Whatever you food try. I would start with single proteins

Limited ingredient foods.  It will be easier to distinguish what the problem is.  Good Luck,  it may take some time.

I will thank u again.. maybe that is why she did a little better on the zignature.. it has less ingredients

We recently put Jessa on...

Arcana trout which has no potato, rice, etc.  She is a little less itchy on that.  Jess has a tail pocket problem and she spends a lot of time itching it, so we've tried several different foods.  A fish oil capsule daily helps with itchiness and you can also give a Zyrtec am and pm, seems to work better than benedryl for our guys.  Her tail pocket gets gunky with yeast so we are looking for foods that have no starches or sugar.  Watch the treats too, better to use raw veggies instead of premade treats.

I wish I had an easy answer....hee hee....Poor Meaty

has had MANY allergy issues in his life.  We did MANY food trials with him, and they

SEEMED to help; but one of our vets thinks it's environmental.  He USED to be

plagued with horrible ear issues and interdigital cysts, which he would lick and chew

constantly; so of course, that made them worse----poor guy!   Sophie also used

to scoot a LOT and her anal glands were also fine; and we clean her bottom after potttying,

but nothing helped.   Although our vet thinks MOST of their issues are environmental; we were

told to always feed them a high-quality, FISH-based kibble, and we tried many!   They

have BOTH been much better since we started them on Natural Balance Salmon and Sweet

Potato---it also has limited ingredients, which I think might be the key :-)....

.....

It was also interesting that although our vet thinks it's environmental, there was ONE time a couple

years ago that I gave them both cooked (PLAIN!) chicken breast as a treat....not very much...just

several bites.  That was the ONE time in Sophie's entire life that she broke out with an

interdigital cyst!   NO more chicken for either of them, ever! ...I felt so bad, because another

vet we go to for serious stuff is a bulldog EXPERT, and he told us beef and poultry are no-nos

for bulldogs....so I really learned my lesson that ONE time!

......

Unfortunately, last summer, Meaty started licking and chewing one paw SO much, it

was shredding!  And this time, it's NOT interdigital cysts, thank goodness----(his used

to be full of pus and sometimes they'd bleed---poor fella!).....His diet and treats hadn't

been changed at all, so yet again, the vet thinks it was the heat of summer, maybe something

in the yard, who knows?  We would apply different medications and soak his paws in warm

water with Epsom salts, but NOTHING helped.    Then the vet started him on APOQUEL, and thank goodness----it worked!  ....that poor paw finally healed!  But....

.....

He was fine until about a month ago, when July was unbeara-bully HOT!!  The constant licking,

chewing, and gnawing on that one paw again!  I'm afraid the Apoquel just isn't working anymore.

The warm water/ Epsom salt soaks help a bit, and I give him 3 Benadryl in the morning, (along with

his daily Apoquel) and the Benadryl does help, but I hate giving it to him every day....

.....

No easy answers, huh?  I have  a feeling that once Fall arrives, he'll be fine.  I hope you find

something(s) that work for your sweet girl !!!  :-)

regarding the tail thing

my baby was a rescue and they had to amputate her tail prior to me getting her.. I sometimes wonder if the scooting is residual of that.. I am leary of the fish due to the fact that even though her coat looks beautiful she is on taste of the wild pacific stream and paw licking, scratching, and scooting.. the scooting is the thing that makes me feel so bad for her.. she seems so uncomfy
