Good morning.
My name is Liam and im from the UK.
My wife and I are looking into buying a dog for quite sometime now and have always been very fond of Bulldogs. I have done as much reseach as i can about Vet checks and genetic tests before buying a puppie but am after advice from owners themselves. Alot of people i talk to say " It will cost you and arm and a leg in vets bills" and all these horror stories and I was just wondering if ots true. Obviously pet insurance is a must but are bulldogs an expensive breed to keep?
Any help would be amazing.
Many Thanks
It all depends on the quality of the breeder!
But saying that, my little Sophia was a puppy mill pup and she hasn't had a problem in all the years I've had her. She will be 10 in January.
No, Bulldogs won't cost you more on vet bills, but you will need to do things to prevent issues from arising. Cleaning the tail pocket, face folds, ears, and making sure they are on a high quality food will go a long way to healing your dog be healthy. Also, a joint supplement started when they are young is a good idea.
best of luck!!!

If you are lucky
if you are lucky you won't have many health problems. My boy is almost 6 and we have had very few issues with him medically. I was put on pet insurance by my vet the first time we brought him in and we have never made a claim. Even so, I have decided on keeping the insurance because you never know what can arise. My dog is from a breeder. He was a wicked puppy. Crazy in fact. He is wonderful with our daughter and we love him to bits. He has some funny bulldog idiosyncrasies but they him unique. There really is nothing like the love of a bully. Good luck!

Hi Liam, My experience...
Our Maude is 9. She is my first bulldog and she has not had any major health issues. At less than a year old, she developed a cherry eye which we had snipped out. No dry eye problems until now and our vet believes this is due to her eyes drying out as she's gotten older. She gets glucosamine every day and she is still very active. Our Gus is 7 and he had surgery to remove bladder stones in January this year. We had to radically change his diet to a low protein food and he is doing well on it. They are the best dogs who have ever owned me and I love them with all my heart. I don't know if they are any more prone to health issues than any other breed. We always hear more about the bad experiences than good.

Considering a Bull Dog
In response to the health issues of an Engish Bulldog. As long as you meet the parents and see a good blood line you should be fine. We were the proud owners for 12 years with only one issue of cherry eye, which is very common in the flat faced breeds in general. I also was the owner of a cocker spaniel that had more health issues than the English Bulldog. Experienced cherry eye with the cocker spaniel as well.
Good luck to you in the search of your new canine family member. Once you are the proud parent of an english bulldog you will never look at other breeds the same.
Happy Thanksgiving
Find a good breeder who cares about the dog's health
We had one who lived until she was 14 years old and no serious health problems until the last 6 months. (Congestive heart failure dure to old age.)
I have had some problems but
They could of all be nip in the bud and wouldnt have cost nothing. It was not my english bulldog health it was stuip vets and Tech that really didnt know how to treat and English Bulldog. If you dont know about the health issues then learn. I find myself having to tell them what they need to do and what meds with my girl can have and I have had many. I did not buy her from a breeder. She my first bulldog and she 7 now and I'm learning still. You see I had put and add looking for a female bullie on craiglist. Yes now I know never do that. But I was bless with the love of her and now knowing I will always have this breed. all I have to say they cost no more than other breed. Good food and you cut out a lot of things that will put in that Vet office.
no one thing is find a good bulldog vet and use them. If they say there no bulldog vets then turn around with your baby and Run....
