Help!! Strange behavior...and I am at a loss

Hi everyone - I hope you and your bullies are enjoying the summer so far! So, I have a question and I really need your thoughts/advice. Bosco has been acting strange. Really strange. First, there is the licking and when I say licking I mean LICKING! Licking his paws, front and back, licking the air, licking the couch, licking my leg, my husband's leg, the comforter. He wakes up in the middle of the night and licks the air and his feet and rocks back and forth. With this, there is the barking. At nothing. Barking at the bookcase. At the ottoman. At the pantry. Just barking. And when he gets going, he does not want to stop. He went to the vet a couple of weeks ago for a checkup. All was well, his blood and 'other' samples came back a-OK. The vet did a squeeze to make sure his glands were all cleared out and they were good. We have not changed his food, or our detergent. Everything in his environment is the same. This behavior has been going on now for probably two months or so and we have no idea why he is doing it. We figure it must be behavioral since nothing here has changed and he is healthy but we do not know what to do about it. We give him lots of love, good food, plenty of exercise and mental stimulation...but something is not right. In case you are thinking he really is itching, he takes Apoquel, which has done a great job controlling his itching to date. Any help or thoughts you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

That IS strange behavior...

Sometimes when they are licking the air it can be a partial focal seizure, but I don't know what would explain the rest of the behavior.  Anxiety maybe?  Would your vet let you try some meds for him?  We put Oliver on Anxitane M & L in his last weeks and it really helped.  It just takes the edge off and relaxes them a little.  Also maybe some rescue remedy.  If he's been vet checked and given a clean bill of health, it almost has to be anxitey or something neuological.

Awww....poor Bosco! The ONLY thing

Ive read about those seizures mentioned above, but I don't know if we've ever SEEN them or not?

It hasn't happened in a long time, but  licking the air and barking a lot is something  Meaty and Sophie would do sometimes, and after talking with our vet and other bully people, we honestly never

knew for SURE what it was, but it **seemed** to be their tail pockets were bugging them!  However, you

said Bosco was JUST at the vet, and everything was checked and was fine----hmmm?  I WISH I could help you more!...

....

.....MAYBE it's just a simple itch somewhere he can't reach?  Was this happening BEFORE his most recent vet check up?   The reason I ask is, maybe his anal glands and tail pocket were fine at the vet's, but since then, he had some poops that are irritating his skin?  ...Or maybe it's his ears?

....

Meaty unfortunately has a DEEP tail pocket, and I remember him years ago, doing that air licking thing  along with butt scooting A LOT!  At that time, he ALSO had severe EAR issues, and he also had recurring interdigital cysts, so he was obviously uncomfy a LOT !!!  Oh, I know what you MIGHT try---wean him onto a new food !!!  THAT is what finally helped most  of Meaty's issues---we had to do MANY food trials to find the right one!  At one point, his allergies were SO bad, we took him to a dermatologist, desperate for allergy testing and to find out ONCE AND FOR ALL what was causing his ear, tail pocket, and paw issues.  But the derm AND two other vets all agreed that allergy testing isn't accurate enough or worth it....**I'm not saying testing isn't a good thing, but since THREE vets said it wasn't worth it, well....LOL....we obviously didn't do it ! :-) **...

...

Not saying changing his DIET  will solve Bosco's problem, (especially IF it is something neurological!) but as I said, it COULD help ???   And although finding the right kibble resolved his horrible ear and paw cysts, he DID have a problem last summer with licking and chewing ONE of his paws SO much, that the skin was shredding!  Like you,

we also considered it COULD be a behavioral issue----I KNOW he has some OCD, poor fella!  :-)

Well, just like Bosco, Meaty was also put on Apoquel and that has been a MIRACLE drug !!!  ...

....

By the by, we all know there are SO many wonder-bull, grain-free, very high quality kibbles out there that are

great for our allergy-prone bullies, and we've tried a TON of 'em....but I'll tell ya, the one that has been AWESOME for him is Nature's  Balance **LIMITED INGREDIENT** Fish and sweet potato !!!  And although Sophie's neverrrr had the skin/ ear/ paw issues poor Meaty has, this kibble has also been

GREAT for her, because she does have a sensitive tummy!  The bag even says it's great for

sensitive tummies because of the limitied ingredients......GOOD LUCK!!!  Hug Bosco for us !!!  :-)

How old is Bosco? I also forgot to add

that our verrrrrry knowledga-bull Bulldog Vet has ALWAYS told us to feed them

FISH - BASED foods !!!  And he's adamant that they have NO pork, chicken, turkey,

or beef, and definitely no grains!  Like I said before, I realize DIET may not be Bosco's

problem at all, but----it MIGHT help?  :-)   I also don't know how old he is, and if you've

already done lots of food trials?  Hope he gets better!!!!  (( hugs ))

I went back and read your

post because I was wondering if the vet check-up was BEFORE this new behavior started.

You said the vet checked his glands, but---is his tail pocket really deep? With Meaty, when

we clean it, I'd estimate it's about 1 1/2 inches deep.....we go throught A LOT of baby

wipes to get it all cleaned out.
