Another question...the vet just prescribed Elavil for Porkie to be given as needed. Her pain is much better controlled now that her pain meds were increased. The ongoing problem is, on her Prednisone days, she pants and pants and pants. She seems so distressed. I asked the vet if we could discontinue the Prednisone and she said no that it was somewhat benefical in the treatment of her arthritis. She gave me Elavil to use as needed on the Prednisone days. I've researched online but cannot find an article covering it's use in bulldogs and potential hazards. I haven't given Porkie a dose as of yet because I am terrified. I caused the death of our first bulldog by giving him acepromazine. I didn't research the med and even more stupidly didn't ask the advice of this board. Titan died almost 14 years ago and I still grieve his death and my involvement. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

I have not given this drug to any of my animals.
I looked up the side effects and they look similar to prednisone. I have used prednisone, and I have always hated the panting that comes with it. I totally understand the concern of giving them something you are unfamiliar with. Maybe get a second opinion. This is an article that I found. https://www.vetinfo.com/side-effects-amitriptyline-elavil-dogs.html
I don't think I would use it.
Can cause sedation, low blood pressure and increased heart rate. All of those scare me.
Have they tried adequan for arthritis?
We have Newman and Chester on it and it's done wonders for both of them. Chester has hemivertibrae in his back and Newman has some arthritis in his back legs. Both are doing great on it. It would be nice to get your girl off the pred, it can cause lots of problems long term. The adequan is given in shots (I do it myself) twice a week for 6 weeks and then once a month thereafter. It's a little expensive at first, but the monthly shots aren't bad. That being said, we had a lhasa years ago on Elavil, it's basically a mood enhancer like lithium. He did okay on it, but it didn't seem to help his separation anxiety. Our vet put Oliver on a drug called Anxitane M & L during his last weeks that was an anti anxiety med and he did well on that. It's not horribly strong, just takes the edge off for them.
I don't know anything about Elavil, but
I just wanted to offer you many ((( hugs )))) about losing your precious Titan! Please don't be so hard
on yourself----!!! You were given a med by a trusted vet; it's NOT you fault !!! You said you "stupidly" didn't ask
people here for advice---that makes me so sad--it wasn't stupid of you at all !!! What a sad thing for you to
endure all these years... I'll tell our precious foster guy Murphy to go and give Titan a lot of ((( hugs)))
for ya!! I'm sure they're happily playing together on the Rainbow Bridge :-) I'm SO very sorry !!!

Elavil
I want to thank all of you for your responses and advice. I have made the decision to NOT give Porkie the Elavil. As my husband pointed out to me, I am the one distressed about the panting NOT Porkie. Hate to admit he's right but as he pointed out her activity level is the same on Elavil days as on non-Elavil days. Her appetite remains the same. I'm the one upset not her. Maybe she's picking up on my anxiety??? Thank you all again!

Aww..((Hugs!!))) I'm glad you're at peace with your
decision.! It's interesting what you said about Porkie (Oh, how I LOVE that name!!!) picking up on YOUR
anxiety. I totally believe that our furbabies pick up on ALL of our emotions! And just like hoomans, I believe
they are very attuned to our body language----actually; since they probably (?) don't understand most of what
we SAY, I'd bet they are even MORE attuned to our body movements than hoomans. Y'know how they
say our NON-VERBAL language says way more about us---and also, how dogs have around a gazillllllllion more
smell receptors and hearing than we do? Imagine if their perception of our body language is THAT much
stronger? Fascinating stuff! :-) ...
...
Hubbs and I have noticed in the past couple years that as soon as Meaty even
sees us go to the area of the kitchen where his EAR DROPS are, he runs and hides...LOL! I mean....HOW does he know
we're not going into the kitchen for a snack? LOL! Yup, it's because he can sense the TENSION in both of us, knowing
we're getting ready to chase him, then hubbs has to hold onto him firmly, etc. etc.....
He acts like we are torturing him over a couple drops in his ears!!!!!! LOL !! Anyhoo, more ((( hugs ))) to you,
I totally understand your anxiety !!!!!!!!
